3bmen Prospect

Dayan Viciedo

3bmen from Cuba.  It seems like we should be all over this guy with our current situation, but the Rangers haven't been mentioned whatsoever.  If he is just a few years away from the bigs, he could join the Rangers in time with the likes of Neftali, D-Ho, Elvis, etc.

Why shouldn't Hicks throw big money at him in order to bring him here instead of signing a player like Crede or Blake who will probably command about the same, dollar-wise?  In the meantime, we can insert Metcalf, Vazquez, whoever and not make the playoffs anyway.

Well

He doesn’t fill the current need for a 3B.

And I think we already have the third baseman for 2010-14 under contract, so he doesn’t really fill a need in the future.

Hmmm....

If memory serves me, Michael Young’s under contract through 2013, as the five-year extension he signed starts next year.

While I don’t know enough about Dayan Viciedo, if there was a quality third base prospect who’d be ready in, say 2012, I think it’s possible that Michael Young could spend his last couple of years at left field perhaps.

Can you believe it? They're bringing back the Five Dollar Footlong. That's right, the Legendary Depression-Era Porn Star is back!!!

Left field?

He’d be below average both offensively and defensively out there.

Left field is not an option.

Offense/Defense...

Michael Young would be below average offensively in the league as a left fielder for certain. But the question would be whether or not there will be better alternatives internally, and if not, how much will the Rangers have to part with to find somebody better. But I don’t necessarily think he’d be so bad defensively in left. I think Young played center field when he was at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

In 2012...

…David Murphy will still be cheap, and would be a better LF than Young.

John Mayberry, Jr., would be an option.

Engel Beltre should be up by then.

Brandon Boggs would be an option.

Plus whatever random guys the Rangers have drafted in the meantime.

And that assumes that Chris Davis hasn’t been moved to RF to make room for Justin Smoak at 1B, which would likely result in Josh Hamilton going to LF.

And also assumes you aren’t running a Hamilton/Borbon/Cruz outfield at that point.

Not to mention the fact that Young will probably be a 725-750 OPS guy at that point in his career, and you can get guys off the waiver wire to play LF and hit like that.

Then...

If you find somebody who could be a better third baseman than Michael Young in 2012, just don’t start Young at all. A lot depends on how good a third baseman you can get and at what cost.

left fielders are a dime

a dozen. There are plenty of LF in the system now and will be in the future so that is of zero concern.

Also...

…Cuban defectors haven’t exactly offered a good ROI over the years.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 8, 2008 6:49 PM CST reply actions

What do you think the asking price is?

If Hicks only loses 500k, I still think it’s worth it. It’s someone who can turn into a Contreras or Alexei Ramirez, it would be a fine prospect to have in our system.

My guess?

A major league deal with at least $5-6 million guaranteed.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 8, 2008 7:11 PM CST up reply actions

He's been compared to Villalona

Villalona got $2.1 million a couple of years ago.

Who are the five hottest 3B prospects from Cuba of all time?

Dayan, Dayan, Dayan, Dayan, and Dayan.

Why? Because he hit hot fi-uh.

The Rangers already have...

a 32 year old 3B prospect with a career .788 OPS who has little range, but a great arm, and fields everyting hit right at him.

Good news is he will be ready by ’10 or sooner if needed!

For what it's worth

the Rangers often aren’t mentioned prominently in the media until pretty late in the process even though they’re in the middle of some of these guys.

Esmailyn Gonzalez and Font are a couple of examples that come to mind. And really, they weren’t associated with Inoa much until pretty late in that process.

I've thought about that recently, too.

We’re very cloak and dagger.

from the chicago tribune today:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-09-rogers-boxnov09,0,1587045.story

He has light-tower power and a strong arm, but his tools are raw and his commitment was questioned during his last two seasons in Cuba. Peter Bjarkman, an expert on Cuban baseball, has described Viciedo as an underachiever with a poor work ethic.

Texas Rangers broadcaster Eric Nadel, who travels regularly to Cuba, says Viciedo was “supposed to be the next Omar Linares when he was 14 or 15, but nobody would make that sort of comparison anymore or even close to it.”

Nadel says Viciedo was not among Cuba’s top third basemen when he defected.
