Any good books?

Hi!

I've been reading the blog here for months till I finally decided to join SBN and to start participating.   As you can see the Rangers aren't my favorite team, but that doesn't mean I don't like them. I just happened to become a baseball fan before they existed.

I was very impressed by them this year for the offense is incredible!!!  That is how I found this blog for I wanted to see what the fans of the Rangers were thinking about it all.

My memories of baseball goes back to the 60's and by the early 70's I was a rabid baseball fan. I remember when the 2nd version of the Senators moved to Texas.  Those were some lean days in Arlington, but things have changed for the better since then thankfully.

So, this brings me to my question.  I would like to learn a lot more about the history of the Rangers and am wondering if there are any books you all would recommend for me to read.  Thank you all for your time and any information you can send my way.  Know I greatly appreciate it!

Loved the book

I remember seeing Nadel talking about the book before a Ranger game in 97 or so, and I just HAD to get it. I was even willing to pay for the whole $40 or $50 price tag at the ballpark, despite being way too young for a job – so it was like a month and a half’s allowance or so.

The best part was the pictures… there were tons of them.

Yeah

Seasons from Hell by Shropshire(?) documents a couple early seasons of the Rangers and is not a bad read. Includes some early Whitey insight as well.

Do you peruse Viva El Birdos too? Luddy for Holliday? Who woulda thought that possible a year ago? Though it might be an expensive deal in the end. Happy reading!

I enjoy VEB quite a bit.....

A great blog and friendly like LSB. Sure is full of fans who know their baseball, again just like the great blog here. I don’t comment a lot for whatever I have to say, someone else seems to have said it already! LOL….

I would love a Luddy for Holliday trade, but I don’t think it will happen. But, hopefully I am wrong.

Wouldn’t a Rangers/Cards Series be a riot?!!! The midwest, south and southwest would tune in to see such a series! Thank you all for the book recommendations so far. I’m looking forward to more suggestions! :)

Beat me to it...

Living in China I’m sometimes late to the conversation. This is not only a great book about Rangers history, but one of the absolute best baseball books ever written…you’ll love it.

Another one

The Impossible Takes a Little Longer: The Texas Rangers from Pretenders to Contenders by Phil Rogers

Besides the hilarious title it’s a good read, but it was made in 1990 so don’t expect it to actually have the winning years.

Here

Is a link for Texas Rangers, Authorized History by Eric Nadel. Eric is the radio voice of the Rangers, and is much respected for his sense of the game and its history.
