Who is your Texas Ranger prospect that is going to shoot up the prospect sheet next season?
mine is Tim Murphy. He will be in Frisco by the end of the year and will be in the 7-10 prospect range in our system by this time next season.
Joe Weiland also is of some interest to me as well. His size is projectable and he could end up becoming a solid prospect. Another guy I think us Ranger's fans are sleeping on is newly acquired Greg Golson. If Rudy can turn him around, which we've seen him do with players of MUCH less talent, we are looking at a top 10 top 15 athlete in all of the minors.

Agree on Miguel De Los Santos...
Miguel De Los Santos missed almost all of 2007 with injuries, but in 34.2 innings this year in the Arizona League he struck out 54 batters. That’s 14 K/9 IP.
Kyle O’Campo could also impress this year. O’Campo got a $250K bonus as a 13th round pick in 2007 (slot was about $40K) and he played pretty well in the AZL as well. He has a 90-93 MPH fastball that supposedly has good life along with a very promising slider. I’ve also read that he’s working on a curveball and a changeup.

Are you sure?
When Kyle O’Campo was drafted, he told Jason Cole at Scout.com that, besides his fastball, his slider was his most advanced pitch. Cole also did the Rangers Top 50 Prospects this year for Scout.com, where he wrote that O’Campo’s slider showed “definite plus potential,” and that he was working to develop a curveball and a changeup. I think Mike Hindman did a piece that said O’Campo has a curveball, not a slider, and that this was consistent with the Rangers’ philosophy. I don’t know for sure either way.

I was basing it on what MJH said
But PG’s coverage of one of the showcases suggests that he has always thrown a curve that sometimes looks like a slider. So maybe that is where the confusion lies…
http://www.perfectgame.org/stories/07_03_14_updating_the_prospects_from_national/
Ocampo appeared to have more than one type of breaking ball, but in retrospect, all were likley curveballs, ranging from 70-79 mph with plus spin and hard downward bite. The thing that made all of them seem to be curveballs was that the shape did not really change, no matter the velocity.
Here is PG’s draft profile:
Pitching – over the top slot, very quick loose arm, deep extension backside, cranks it up, free and easy delivery, FB very lively at plate, good late life, plus spin on breaking ball, ranged CB velocity, all appeared to be CBs, threw some very hard, good down bite, shape stayed pretty consistent, good feel of CU, good fade action.
Here is BA’s draft profile
He throws both a slider and a curveball, and scouts like the slider a bit better at present, as he’s shown a feel for throwing it for strikes or burying it out of the zone.

I feel like our '08 draft pitchers have the best chance
Ross will have a good year, and will jump from the 15-20 range of top prospect in our system to top 10
Joe Weiland will establish himself as a solid prospect and land in the top 20 of our prospects.
And I somehow feel that Vallejo might just be this close to getting to the big league by the end of the year….

There’s no doubt he’s been a bust to this point. However, you can’t write him off quite yet. Most of his issues are against lefties, and his August was fairly impressive. Also, he just turned 19 on August 20, so he’s still very young.

6th Round Bust?
I got to tell you that most sixth rounders don’t make the Major Leagues at all. Robert Wilkins’s overall numbers this year weren’t all that bad— it would have been better if he wasn’t coming out of the bullpen— but his splits against lefthanders were obscene. Just a mild adjustment on that front could cause a pretty big upswing for him.
As far as making the major leagues, like I said, sixth rounders more often then not don’t make it. Richard Bleier was this year’s sixth round choice, and there’s almost no one in the system that Bleier is that much more highly ranked then. As you know, the Rangers are loaded on pitching prospects, and with 30+ pitchers currently ranked ahead of him, the odds are really against almost anyone drafted where Wilkins was. After all, minor league systems tend to undergo close to 100% turnover about every six years (corresponds pretty closely to six year free agency). And on top of the guys currently in the system, there could be several “graduates” of the system in the next six years who haven’t yet become professionals.
But it’s still pretty hard to label a guy who’s a sixth rounder a bust until he’s been completely ruled out. And then consider what’s a reasonable expectation for a sixth rounder anyways.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, huh? Didn't you just say that suicide doesn't solve anybody's problems?

you're dead wrong
It depends on the position. The easiest way to make it to the majors is as a relief pitcher. Most of those are drafted as relief pitchers (not starters) after round 10. You will find a fairly even distribution of relief pitchers drafted in rounds 11-20 and 21-30 who make it to the bigs. Hitters are second in line and Starting pitchers are dead last.
Major league caliber starters rarely emerge when drafted after the 5th round or who sign for less than 5th round money (inlcuding intl. free agents). As for wilkins (and thompson for that matter), I can see no justification for the rangers selecting these guys(“projected” starters) in that range as they have a snowballs chance in hell to make it as starters. Oakland makes a point to draft college players in this range and I am in total agreement with this strategy. However, they could make it as relievers down the road but a relievers value lies post 10th unless he profiles as an elite closer so these are wasted picks in my estimation. As for hitters, a much higher percentage of hitters (Jrs) are successful in the 6-10 range so a blanket statement like yours really holds no weight.
As a general rule, a JR drafted in the top 15 picks should be expected to make it to AA and have some success. That is a reasonable expectation. If you don’t make it to AA or are a AA bust, then I reserve the right to call you a bust.
More to the point on wilkins, he can be considered a bust in numerous ways: 1. by (my) definition (if he was drafted as a starter) – starters have little chance to succeed when fifth round money or better is not involved; 2. If he can’t succeed in AZL 2 yrs in a row without any appreciable increase in IP or results. 3. down the line when he fails to make it to or out of Clinton (my predicton).

Blake Beavan
I really think that Beavan is going to make a huge leap. His velocity will make it back. With his velocity and control he could really step up.

I feel like I'm a week late for Thanksgiving and the carcass is picked clean
I’ll take Poveda, because he’s one guy that already has a nice compliment of secondary stuff and a great frame. If somebody slips him some of what Holland was drinking in 08, then he could move up quick.

Maximiliano
He’s gonna do to OKC what Cruz did last year. If he’s gone by Spring training or on the ML roster I’ll pick Boscan as my Prospect-to-go-nuts alternate

I think I'll predict
Yoon-Hee Nam and Glenn Swanson to have break out years. They are flying completely under the radar. Similar to where Holland was just a short while ago.

After dropping slightly due to the influx of talent...
I’m going with Kasey Kiker.
Already talented, but I think he really shines this year and makes his way into the top 5.
