News on some N.L. pitchers

You know that "maybe the Brewers won't offer Ben Sheets arbitration" talk of late?

Well, nevermind.  Milwaukee has offered both Sheets and C.C. Sabathia arbitration, guaranteeing them two draft picks apiece if the pitchers walk.

Meanwhlie, Mike Hampton's enormous contract has finally run out, and he's signed a one year, $2 million deal with the Astros.

Brewers

Won’t they get 4 draft picks if they walk? 2 first rounders and 2 sandwich picks

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Is the Rangers' first-round pick protected this year?

If so, I don’t see how this would really make that much difference in the Rangers possibly signing Sheets and definitely not signing Sabathia.

As for Hampton… hopefully he can rediscover some of his lost magic in Houston. His ERA+ each year there was 107, 116, 108, 104, 122 and 154. Of course, all of those years were in the Astrodome. Since 2000, he has a 5.523 ERA in 29 1/3 innings at Enron/Minute Maid.

Yeah, its protected

Set aside the “Rangers won’t spend money ever again” argument, this is a good development. One thing people have been mentioning regarding Sheets is a 1 year deal to prove he’s healthy (I don’t think he needs that – he is what he is – but people seem to want it). Well, losing a draft pick for a one year player adds a little disincentive to many of those clubs picking 16-30. Just a little thing to bring his price down.

Overall though, I think the losing a draft pick is a far more ominous possibility when the free agent is some middling guy like, say TODD VAN POPPEL, than a possible TORG like Sheets.

OT. this just in, Salty's bad at blocking pitches.

What?!?!?!?

No… I refuse to believe that Salty isn’t the most awesomenest catcher around!

What's wrong with the comments

in the main post there, though, is thinking that’s another reason to move Salty to 1B. That’s a reason for me to make sure he gets more playing time and practice blocking, not move him to a different position where his bat would be a question mark.

agreed

but the playing time never had to be in the majors.

Mike Hampton

will always be my response whenever someone asks “Instead of signing A-Rod, why didn’t they use some of that money for pitching”

Hampton

I’m shocked. I thought for sure he’d get $121 million/eight years.
