This could be a sign
that this will be a disappointing offseason for free agents (especially besides the big three – CC, Manny, and Tex).

This all makes me think that LAA is going to get one of the big FAs, sort of like when they got Vlad during the last baseball recession.
Let them
dig themselves into a deeper hole… They have been known to give terrible contracts to terrible players in recent years…
Hope they do that to Sheets this year.
"You can be a leader or follower.... Or you can be elite...." - Me
There
not in exactly the best division…. And they don’t really make it that far in the playoffs when they do make it.
"You can be a leader or follower.... Or you can be elite...." - Me
well that failed
imagine a pic of their world series trophy.
the preceding post was a great success.
LOL - Even a PICTURE of a World Series trophy won't show up....
on Rangers board. Gawd karma sucks….
Not many suprises there
Most of those guys are either well past their primes coming off huge contracts or huge injury risks who would get big raises in arbitration
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
yeah
seems like ages would tell the story.
and milton would definitely be an outlier in that list, though that move would be defensible
Hmm…I guess Wood and Penny are a little strange and Milton isn’t far off those comps.
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
Milton
Well he is still only gonna be 31 next year and injury history aside if he can go to an AL club and strictly DH he is a very valuable player.
Wood and Penny fall under the injury thing. Wood because he had a great year last year and is in line for a huge raise but still has the injury history
Penny more because he made he made 11 million last year and didn’t crack 100 innings.
Arbitration means the player will make at least close to or more than he made previously. So for a guy like Penny who would get at least 10 mil in arbitration it probably isn’t worth it.

I know that Yankees fans
are surprised on Abreu and Cards fans are Looper.

Looper
Thats a tricky one for sure. I can see where the Cards may be worried. Until two years ago he was a reliever and then made the switch to starter and the last two years has dramatically increased the innings he has put on his arm. At 34 its not like hes a spring chicken anymore and they could be erring on the side of caution.

Yeah
it’s just that it’s only one year.

I would think if he was a type A they would have offered it

Abreu is so bad defensively in the OF I don't think any NL teams are showing much interest.
And the DH market is always limited.
Even so, you’re right, it is a bit surprising.

Bradley offered arbitration.

Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. 45 given up in the 1st quarter. Wow. But still we're better than Washington! Oh and, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-10 baby!
Phew
Although I’m still completely pissed about the Elias system which somehow has Franchise Face as one of the top players in baseball and a guy who was arguably the most effective hitter in the AL as a type B.
I'm curious
what percentage of team’s revenue comes from ticket sales, parking, concessions, etc? My guess is that it is a fairly small slice of the pie compared to the TV deals, etc which are guaranteed.
I think the impact of the current economic climate would have relatively little affect on most team’s bottom line. My guess is that some owners are trying to use this as an excuse to get spending under control.
In memory of Ulysses Simpson Grant Stoner. RIP Lil Stoner.
Add Dunn
to the least of players not offered arbitration.

This seems like good news
All of those guy who didn’t get offered arb means many less type A’s and Bradley was a high B so not sure if any of those B’s were ahead of him but if he signs elsewhere then that comp pick received will be higher.
That doesn't matter
Just because a type A doesn’t get offered doesn’t mean the next type B moves up. Bradleys a type B no matter what
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
doesn't it reduce
the number of picks in front of the “B” pick?
by Randy Richardson on Dec 1, 2008 10:13 PM CST up reply actions
Are you talking about in the draft?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I think that's what he meant.
"My mother always taught me that if the only thing you have to say is,
‘(Expletive) Dave Samson,’ then don’t say anything at all.
So I’m not going to say anything at all.
Is my mother the greatest or what?"
- Mariners GM Bill Bavasi, after signing Ichiro to a $90 million contract
I don't know about that part
I was thinking he thought that if a type A didn’t get offered arbitration then the highest ranking type B would become a type A and so on and so on.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I thought the original
comment was referring to the draft. If he was, I think the thought was that there are probably five or so picks taken off the board in front Bradley’s compensation pick.
by Randy Richardson on Dec 1, 2008 10:22 PM CST up reply actions
Was indeed referring to the draft
And yes, having less type A’s around means that there are potentially fewer type A sandwich comp picks for Bradley’s comp pick to be behind.
by groundingout on Dec 1, 2008 10:51 PM CST up reply actions
You missed another positive
With fewer Type As & Bs out there Bradley is less attractive now because he will cost his team a pick and money where these other good FAs will only cost money.
That means he might be less likely to sign elsewhere. It should also mean his monetary value has been reduced. Those things could translate to the Rangers being more likely to sign him and possibly for less money.
Not realted to Bradley, but with this many free agents being truly free the monetary value of all FAs might be reduced some. Who knows maybe this could lead to further arb els in the future not being offered and creating an interesting trend.
He doesn't cost his team a pick
A type B doesn’t cost a team a pick to sign. The team that loses him gets a pick but the signing team doesn’t have to forfeit a pick. Thats only type A FAs that cost draft picks
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I still can't believe that Cat was type A before falling off his cliff.
JD’s only unconscionable move, imo.

If Bradley accepts Arb
they probably settle somewhere in the neighborhood of $9-10m? Guessing here.
If that’s the case, would anyone offer him 2/$15m instead of a 1-year deal? And would he take it?

I'm surprised about Hoffman
With the development centric management, and the PR disaster of basicaly saying screw you to him, the Padres could have saved some face by offering him arb – “hey, we gave him a chance to come back” they could say. I doubt Hoffman would have taken it, after the words supposedly said between him and the F.O.
I think he would've accepted.
And it’s not like they could’ve traded him if he did. He’s a 10-5 guy.

they’ve got enough LH hitters already.

But honestly, Blalock is enough reason not to get Dunn. Either you get Dunn, or you get Blalock. Having both is kind of silly.

Burrell and Abreu…
Those guys aren’t going to get multiyear offers?
Both those pretty much astonish me.
Go Strangers.
Show me a list of who WAS offered arbitration
Then we’ll see better if this list makes sense. There’s about 5 names on the above list that dumbfound me. I guess a lot of execs are thinking guys will take a 1 year deal in hopes of getting long-term stuff a year from now.

Darren Oliver???
I guess offering a postage stamp and having to give up a cup of coffee is worth an arb offer… I guess.

What
Its a smart move. Oliver is a guy they probably want to keep. The arbitration tag will keep alot of teams away. Hes been a pretty good reliever for them. Smart move by the Angels. Now Jon Garland on the other hand is a little different. They must be willing to pay his 11+ million he would get in arbitration if they tagged him.
