Time to move on to the vote for #23.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

Could Wilmer Font
Be this year’s Neftali Feliz or Derrick Holland? This guy tunes it right up there with both those guys. Could we see him in the majors next to Feliz and Holland in a rotation in 2012, or is he just not progressing like they want him to?

Dont needs to stay healthy, not be pronounced "probably-dead" by Jason Parks for an entire season, and maybe throw some full season innings.
He does those three things and maybe I might starting getting all wet for him.
Until then?
There’s a little moisture, but not enough to get excited about.

after murphy
it should probably be kennil, golson, and lemon in some order. then, the next tier is probably Clark Murphy, Christian Santana and Carlos Pimentel. then, perhaps a fight between matt west and beau jones for the final spot in the top thirty. just so much depth here, and i am probably grossly discounting some of the younger LA kids because I just don’t know enough about them.

I think people should define break-out year
It’s become a bit cliche. Gomez had a break-out year this year even considering his injury. What will his break-out year look like next year? Just having a full season of comparable stuff (sub 3 era in first half) doesn’t really count in my estimation….

Okay.
BTW, is it Macumba de los Santos, or just Macumba? I thought Macumba was a whole nickname, a la Nene or Madonna or Cher, as a opposed to a nick-first-name, a la “Bam” Morris or “Ironhead” Hawyard.
What’s the official word here?

I know it's a nickname, but is it a replace-the-whole-name kind of a nickname or just a nick-first-name?
Like you’ll sometimes see Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez, but no one calls him A-Rod Rodriguez.
Or maybe it’s a dual use kind of nickname, like Pudge. You could call him simply Pudge, or you could say Pudge Rodriguez, and both were technically correct.

I've been hinting at Macumba
For some time now. If it ever comes down to Macumba vs. Telis vs. Santana I think the phsycological effect of Santana and Telis being on there longer than Macumba could shift a few things.
Of course the likelihood of that happening is like zero point zero zero two, so take that for what it’s worth…

I agree that there are some very good high level hitting prospects
But my point is that there are fewer mid-tier guys. Whereas we have a lot of guys like Ross and Wieland, who may click and be great, it seems like when MJH does his lists of position players there is a huge dropoff between the top tier that you list and the next few guys. The guys we had like that the last few years (e.g., Whittleman, Mayberry, Santana) had bad years, and guys like Lemon and Moreland just aren’t high ceiling guys to get excited about.
Maybe Clark Murphy is just the same as Wieland and Murphy – a young kid with a decent probability of taking off – but we’ve all gotten to the point that any decent arm appears more valuable than a decent bat.

5 tools, only 23, will probably be in AAA this year
Jaramillo working with him on his hitting. Is there anything wrong with his game besides the strikeouts/approach at the plate? I’m sure JMJ would have been voted around 20-25 so I went with Golson

Well, Golson is a couple of years younger than JMJ
And that gives him a little more time to figure things out. He had a .330 OBP last year which isn’t terrible. If Rudy could just fix his swing, then he could become something.

I think Boggs gets the benefit of the doubt next season, as a result of his service time last year. Golson needs a ton of work on his swing or he’ll get chewed up by major league pitching

I was staring at the numbers… wondering the exact same thing. I know that we’ve heard soooo much about how much of a “shed” Golson is, but Boggs is clearly more advanced.
Golson is young, he can use some more swings in the minors… no reason for any “controversy” between him and Boggs right now.

The Apostrophe, FWIW
The crux of my biscuit was that it might be interesting and revealing to watch the Rangers decisions if Golson and Boggs are sort of pitted against each other for 4th/5th OF’er. There eventually may be some PT trend found that shows the FO is perhaps more biased towards either trad-scout or sabre-style eval. Potential for future forum fodder, that’s all.

Yup.
PECOTA saw Lemon this year as the 8th best shorstop prospect in the country, and chief among the “Very Good” tier of prospects with an upside ranking of 97.0.
Andrus was three spots behind him with an 81.2.
Last year, Andrus actually came out a bit better and was 6th in the country and an “Excellent” prospect. Lemon’s score was much worse, but he was still 8th and still a “Very Good” prospect.

Not an easy answer.
What it says about their upside on D I don’t know yet, and I’m not sure how trustworthy it would be, anyway.
That says, Lemon’s PECOTA card calls him a “fantastic” defender and sees him as a guy who would be five runs above average if he was brought up right now. It has Andrus as a run below average.
