Sun Sentinel on Salty or MaxRam to Marlins
In spite of Berardino's words to the contrary, and MJH's prediction that something would get done with the Sox, IMO a trade with Florida could make a lot of sense for both sides. It would take an additional prospect coming from the Rangers, especially for Johnson, Volstad or Nolasco but few teams have such an abundance of good young major-league ready pitching, and they need a good young major-league ready catcher with upside. Also didn't realize Salty was from Florida.
Here are some '08 stats for the pitchers mentioned and Buchholz:
Josh Johnson - 87ip, 91h, 77k, 27bb, 3.61era, 118era+, 1.35whip. 24yrs, 6'7", 240lb, throws-right. (Had Tommy John - aug '07)
Chris Volstad - 84ip, 76h, 52k, 36bb, 2.88era, 148era+, 1.33whip. 22yrs, 6'7", 190lbs, throws-right. ('08 was his rookie year)
Ricky Nolasco - 212ip, 192h, 186k, 42bb, 3.52era, 121era+, 1.10whip. 26yrs, 6'2" 220lbs, throws-right.
Anibal Sanchez - 51ip, 54h, 50k, 27bb, 5.57era, 76era+, 1.56whip. 24yrs, 6'0", 180lbs, throws-right. (Had shoulder problems after brilliant rookie year in '06. Surgery for torn labrum in '07...risky)
Clay Buchholz - 76ip, 93h, 72k, 41bb, 6.75era, 68era+, 1.76whip. 24yrs, 6'3", 190lbs, throws-right.
Jonathan Sanchez - 158ip, 154h, 157k, 75bb, 5.01era, 87era+, 1.44whip. 26yrs, 6'2", 165lbs, throws-left.
Andrew Miller - 107ip, 120h, 89k, 56bb, 5.67era, 72era+, 1.64whip. 23yrs, 6'6", 210lbs, throws-left.

Can't say I'm too excited about either Sanchez
but the rest I’d be very excited to see come to Texas. I may even be convinced to include Main or Perez for Johnson or Volstad.

To me,
Volstad and Nolasco are the prizes in that group.

my rankings
nolasco is the best
buchholtz
josh johnson
jon sanchez
volstad
anibal sanchez
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

the thing is
both sanchezes present the opportunity to buy low. volstad was never considered a potential ace in the minors, just an advanced ground ball pitcher with no true out pitch. now his value is inflated because of his strong debut (just like anibal’s was after 2006).

i agree, but I dont think salty is that low.
the preceding post was a great success.

agree
if we can parlay max into jonathan sanchez, i am okay with that. at this point, anibal is now worth any of our three catchers. still, they do present a decent buy low proposition if a match can be found.

could consider Miller
a borderline buy-low candidate too, although i imagine the Marlins want a better look at him. He’s 23 and a lefty, and was slightly disappointing last year compared to expectations.

Nolasco is
very appealing but I don’t know if we can get him.

ahh i would love to get volstad
6’7 190 pounds only 22 years old and put up those numbers in his rookie year…damn imagine if he added 20 30 pounds and added a mph or two to the fb

except
we aren’t going to get volstad.
so, we really only have a shot at anibal, right?

Nolasco is not coming to us.
Unless we gave up Holland/Feliz, which isn’t happening.
Sad because I’d LOVE to have him. His control/stats make me drool.

I bet you could get Nolasco
for Chris Davis.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.

Hmm
I would have to think really hard about that. If it were a swap, then I probably would. But Florida’s going to ask for another position player/young arm, possibly both, in addition to CD.
I really don’t want to trade Chris for anything right now.
He’s been everything we’ve asked for thus far in the majors. He’s still 22 and has the capacity to improve greatly. And his birthday is on St. Pattys day just like me, so I have something to talk about with him.
My reasoning is fantastic.

Sanchez
A torn labrum probably means he will never be the same pitcher who threw the no-hitter. Pitchers don’t recover from that injury.

Yep
if pitchers with torn labrums were horses, they’d be destroyed. Of the 36 major-league hurlers diagnosed with labrum tears in the last five years, only midlevel reliever Rocky Biddle has returned to his previous level. Think about that when your favorite pitcher comes down with labrum trouble: He has a 3 percent chance of becoming Rocky Biddle.

Florida Report
It’s on MLBTraderumors that the Marlins offered Jeremy Hermida to TEX and SEA for ‘catching’. This is probably posted in some post somewhere, but I didn’t see it so here you go.

Wow...
another LH bat for the OF. No thanks.
Think pitching Marlins, or don’t think Rangers catching.

Hermida
I’d be very interested in getting Hermida. He doesn’t really fill a need at all but he’s a pretty good player with some upside left.

How would you
squeeze him into the OF merry-go-round? Deal Murphy or Cruz?
