Sabathia contract/Catchall Winter Meetings Post
Here's a place to dump all winter meetings rumors/signings so we don't end up with multiple diaries about the same signing like yesterday...
Back in July, just for fun, I posted a diary inviting guesses on what it would take to sign Sabathia. Here are the closest guesses from that diary to the actual 7 year, $160 million deal he signed with the Yankers:
My own: 7/$170
willamos2: 7/$150
and several others were in the neighborhood, but thedirkatron nailed it with a guess of 7/$161. Congrats, I guess. I'm sure my guess would have been correct if it weren't for the stupid economy, but I'm not bitter that DORKatron was closer.

i think it is funny
that JD worked so hard to temper expectations when it comes to FA and the prospect of bringing in young pitching via a trade, and then Nolan, in the span of about 24 hours, talks about his love of Buchholz, his optimism about signing Sheets, and now his good relationship with Randy Johnson. On one hand, with NR, we would have pretty much nothing Rangers related to talk about, on the other, it will cause a lot of grumbling if we leave LV without any more action.

And to clarify
Im fine with seperate fanposts when it is for guys either on the Rangers, Rangers signings, or significant players either leaving or coming to our division. Its the ones about Rafael Furcal going to Toronto and the multiple Chicago Tribune and Multiple K-Rod ones that irk me.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
How about RJ and Sheets?
He (Nolan Ryan) said that Johnson and Ben Sheets are the two free agent pitchers in which the Rangers are willing to invest
get it done, but i’m guessing that would mean a millwood trade?

what's wrong with RJ?
he had 30 starts last year, still is pretty good. I wouldn’t mind him being here one bit…

RJ
I don’t personally want to see a 42 year old whos only going to be here one year max take time away from our young guys like McCarthy, Hurley, Harrison and others who are supposed to be the backbone of our rotation for the next 5-10 years. Performance has nothing to do with it. if we were one pitcher away from being a WS contender then maybe. But as we are currently constructed I don’t want him.

Really?
Wow that makes it even worse. Dear god I would be so pissed if we brought in a 45 year old who is taking starts away from guys 20 years younger than him. I would much rather watch a 25 year old struggle next year rather than a 45 year old
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
if he just takes millwood or padilla's spot
it’s no big deal. it’s good to have a really good pitcher regardless of age to eat some innings and give your team a chance to win.
it’s really hard to develop anything if your starter gives you 3.2 innings and you are down 8 runs.
Mandatory reading before suggesting a trade
does it really make any difference whatsoever that hes 45, 42 or 31?
as long as its a 1 year contract, someone without a future with the team, what difference does it make?
Randy Johnson can still pitch.
Now, rather I’d want to have him depends on what the rangers would do exactly. Do I want a rotation of RJ, Millwood, Padilla and only two spots for young guys we already have? Not really, though it wouldnt be the end of the world.
But if someone else is traded, we don’t add any young pitchers in a catcher trade so theres less pressure, etc… he could fit.
I wouldnt want them to just throw him a bunch of money and say well theres our offseason, but they should be talking to him as an option, and act on it if things fall that way.
the preceding post was a great success.
That does make a difference
Our young guys are ready to play in the big leagues. last year that wasn’t the case at this time. Hurley had half a year, and unspectacular half year at that, under his belt in AAA. Harrison hadn’t hit AAA yet. I could handle a one year deal then. But now our young guys are ready to be in the bigs and I don’t want a 45 year old taking that away from them. Like i said if we were one pitcher away from being a WS contender then sure give it a shot. but we aren’t.
Now if we get rid of one of our veterans and can’t sign Sheets then I would be somewhat interested in Randy Johnson on a one year deal. I don’t think it would happen but if he is taking Millwood or Padillas spot for only a year that is bearable
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
backbone of a rotation?
if McCarthy, Hurley, Harrison are the "backbone of our rotation for the next 5-10 years, we are in for another looooooooooooooooong decade.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
Ok backbone wasn't the best term
But solid contributors I think is more accurate. I expect Holland and Feliz or Main to be the backbone but McCarthy, Hurley, and Harison should be solid contributors.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Wow
You expect all 5 rotation spots to be filled by guys currently in the organization? That would be amazing.
"Colt mccoy sucks, mack brown needs to be fired." - Longhorn
by LSBUser on Dec 10, 2008 6:20 PM CST up reply actions
I could see it
Holland
Main
McCarthy
Hurley
Harrison
Feliz as the closer
That could very easily happen within the next 3 years. A stud FA veteran would be nice but TB didn’t have one of those. It can be done. All those guys I listed above would, or should, have at least one year in the majors in three years time. That would be Main. Holland will probably have 2+, and McCarthy, Hurley, and Harrison should have 3+.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
you're right
i thought his season was much worse. but basically, if you want him to do what padilla or millwood would be doing, he’d have a high probability of doing it better.
i wonder how much he’s asking for
Mandatory reading before suggesting a trade
ahh
becomes a bit clearer??

Gary Sheffield?
Gerry Fraley strikes again:
2:55 p.m. — Rangers ask about Sheffield
Texas has contacted Detroit about the availability of outfielder-designated hitter Gary Sheffield.
The Ranges need a middle-of-the-lineup bat to replace Milton Bradley, headed out of town as a free agent. Sheffield carries risks. He is 40 years old and has been troubled by shoulder problems in recent seasons. Sheffield last had a 30-homer, 100-RBI season in 2005. —Gerry Fraley
In other news...
The BBWAA added Christina Kahrl, Will Carroll, Keith Law and Rob Neyer. Well deserved.

The LA Times says the O’s are coming in hot on Tex
The Yankees’ imminent signing of free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia to a seven-year, $160-million deal would seem to take them out of the running for Mark Teixeira, but that will hardly ease the competition the Angels face in retaining the free-agent first baseman.
According to a source from a team who is involved in negotiations, the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles “are coming in hot” on Teixeira, with the Nationals apparently willing to offer the slugger a 10-year deal for more than $20 million a year and the Orioles willing to go nine years for at least $20 million a year.

Milwood to Mil?
The Rangers are talking to the Brewers about pitching, The Brewers need a pitcher after losing C.C. Sabathia and they like Kevin Millwood. General manager Doug Melvin has a high regard for him. Vicente Padilla is another possiblity.
The Rangers need a right-handed bat. Would they like Gary Sheffield? Maybe.
Here is what one Rangers official said, “Would consider it if they wanted to give him away. Not going to spend money there.”
Sheffield, 40, makes $14 million in 2009. He hit .225 last season with 19 home runs and 57 RBI
I would do the deal if they have a deal in place for Sheets… Regardless of what you get in return for Millwood
Hmm?
Milwaukee is going to trade Sheffield to the Rangers for Millwood? What a steal for the Brewers? :)
No to Johnson and Sheffield. Would the Brewers give up Stetter ( lefty, 30 ML IP, 35ks, 3.26 era, 1.220 whip) or do we need to settle on a prospect such as Jeffress or Peralta?
4) Jeremy Jeffress, RHP, Grade B: Huge upside with 100 MPH fastball, putting things together gradually, still learning to pitch.
12) Wily Peralta, RHP, Grade C+: A high upside arm, but a long way from the majors

Mitch Moreland - Rangers 2009 Minor League Player of the Year
settle on Jeffress?
yes please.
i would also keep in mind 3B Taylor Green and LHP Zach Braddock, as well as ML pitcher Carlos Villanueva, who has pitched much better in the bullpen.
Shef
Only if mondo-craniumed Barry hooks him up with a new roid connect.
Shef hasn’t been good since he got off the juice…

Since one of the primary reasons they exercised Cameron’s option was to try and entice Sabathia to come back, I’m not surprised he’s on his way out. The newest update says the deal isn’t done yet.
