Victor Rojas to MLB Network

Just read this on the DMN Ranger Blog. Here is the link:

Victor Rojas Leaving Rangers

I always liked Victor. Thought that he and Nadel worked well together. Of course, there has also been speculation that Josh Lewin might leave the Rangers to take the TV gig with the Padres which was vacated by the departure of Matt Vasgergian, who also was hired by MLB Network (which premieres in January 2009). My guess is that Steve Busby might take over for Victor. I thought he did a great job when he filled in for Victor when Victor took TAG's place last season. But if Josh leaves as well, who knows what will happen. The ultimate thing, in my opinion, would be for Eric and Tom Grieve to work together and do a simulcast on radio and TV, kind of like what the Stars do. Nadel has never wanted to do TV, though, so who knows.

I didn't mind him

Now, if only we could get a Nadel/TAG tv crew.

I’ll have to talk to

Curiousity

I’m curious, am I the only one who thinks Lewin always looks like just saw a ghost? Maybe it’s just the eyebrows but it drives me crazy.

+ 1 it could be Botox..

Botox raises the eyebrows like that.

3 million?

when lewin was gone and victor was in the tv booth it was doubly painful.

victor worked poorly with TAG, busby.. i just didnt like him. rough broadcasts for a while there.

the preceding post was a great success.

Simulcast would be unlistenable on both mediums

When everyone got bumped up..

…Rojas to TV, Busby to Radio, Steve Buchelle did the KDFI postgame stuff, and on that very first day to say that Buchelle looked and sounded nervous would be a gross understatement. I love the guy, but in his first segment I’m not sure he actually put out one coherent thought. (He did get better.)

The broadcaster for Padres last year

left them for MLB Network. Rojas was then granted permission to be interviewed by the Padres for the vacant spot…but then hired by MLB Network as well. heh.

Good for Victor.

I always thought he was pretty good, at least good enough to be a No. 1 on a crew.

It will be interesting to see who replaced Rojas. But in the end, it only makes me miss Mark Holtz.

Hope Lewin Stays

Say what you will about Lewin, he can fill dead air with something. Even if it is repetitive. When Rojas did TV with TAG, the dead air was deafening.

Dead air

It’s a visual medium. You don’t have to fill every single second with inane blather.

I’m a Lewin fan…I’ve got not problem admitting that it just wouldn’t be the same if Josh wasn’t calling the games…it would be an adjustment…

by Austin Ranger on Dec 10, 2008 8:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Lewin is cool

The way he announces a game you always get the feeling he’s enjoying himself and loves just being there – which, for me just makes the game more fun.

"Lewin is cool"

First time that sentence has ever been uttered without a hugeass qualifier…

Nah, noob.

by Brian Thomas on Dec 11, 2008 12:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Lewin is cool because he understands that he has a diverse audience to please...

He’s one of those guys that doesn’t want to step on people’s toes… so he plays the unpopular role of nice guy by making bad jokes and poking fun at himself… so it doesn’t piss anyone off.

I will say that he is an acquired taste

When I first heard him, after being out in Hawaii for 4 years w/ no satellite access, I frickin hated him. I hated him like thedirkatron irrationally hates MDB.

But he’s grown on me some. With the MLB package, you get to see that there are a lot of crappy announcers out there. He is better than many.

Nah, noob.

I think Lewin is ok

there are far worse and he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Congrats to Victor

Sounds like a good move for him. I’ll really miss him though. I had a nice talk with him two seasons ago in Anaheim, and I liked listening to him and Eric on the radio.

i dont care about rojas

but im pretty hyped for the mlb network. theres not enough baseball news on tv.
and it comes free with my fios.

I'm hoping

that AT&T U-Verse offers it on the main tier because I could use some baseball and I get tired of hearing Steve Phillips and John Kruk. I am pumped about it. If it’s half as good as NFL Network, then it will be great.

saw a good idea on BP

i think it was a shehan chat there that said put someone like will carrol, keith law and the baseball equivilllant of ron jaworski and it would be “very watchable” – makes sense to me. you have 24 hrs to fill, whats the worst thing that can happen?

just answered my own question

“MLB Network will be available to all Verizon FiOS TV customers as part of the Essentials and Extreme HD packages on channel 86, when it debuts January 1, 2009. Verizon also will offer a high-definition (HD) simulcast of MLB Network on channel 586.”

fios recently changed up the packages, i had to call and redo my bundle to the new “extreme hd” to get a few new channels.
new subscribers its either essentials or extreme.

I don’t have anything extra, but I might be willing to fork over a bit just to have a highlights/wrap up show choice that’s not BBTN.

when i called (i wanted some new hd channels like fx, etc) i ended up getting the new extreme pack and extra movie channels for less than i was spending before. Plus it comes with every sports channel.

Well, good luck to Victor

I liked him on KLRD, though I’ll be the first to admit he was a beating on the TV side, especially if he and Lewin got paired together for a game.

Hopefully they’ll get someone decent to replace him with, and not go the Steve Busby route.

Good Luck to Rojas

I always liked him, he had good chemistry with nadel but it was always slightly uncomfortable to watch the chemistry between him and tag
