Tigers Trade for Jackson
Just read Rosenthal's latest and it seems that Detroit has acquired Edwin Jackson from Tampa for leftfielder Matt Joyce.
Doesn't seem like much for Jackson. I know the guy has been a disappointment and that Matt Joyce looks to be a decent outfielder, but I would have liked for the Rangers to get in on that guy. He has a ton of upside. He pitched a couple of great games against us if I remember. Wonder if a guy like Murphy or Cruz would have been better than Joyce.

I would think Murphy or Cruz would have landed Jackson.

I'd have traded Murphy for him...
Even if he ends up a bullpen arm, he’s still got value…

I bet cruz would have been enough
But I wouldnt have done that. i dont know if hes really better than hurley and such. if we arn’t going to acquire a starter otherwise jackson probably would have been a worthwhile addition later in the offseason, but yeah.. whatever.
the preceding post was a great success.

This trade is so dumb it hurts
Joyce is a useful player who may become more than that, while Jackson has been a terrible, terrible pitcher for quite some time now. I know he’s got great stuff and everything, but he’s never shown any signs of consistently putting together anything. I am really glad that the Rangers stayed away from him-not they were ever really rumored to be interested in him.
The Tigers now have Edwin Jackson and Dontrelle Willis on the same staff. Good Lord.

I don't see the point
of acquiring another starter who fills the 3, 4 or 5 slot in the rotation. We have plenty of candidates for that role.

WOW
we could have given them Murphy or Byrd or any other pointless hitters
by Stevoo on Dec 10, 2008 10:26 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Which would have been way too much
Give me some real prospects for those guys – not a guy who’s already been in the bigs for quite some time and still can’t be more than a pretty bad pitcher.

last year his ERA was under 4.42
which is better than any of our starting pitchers
by Stevoo on Dec 11, 2008 3:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Backed by the Rangers defense
his ERA would have been over 5.00.

Dude seriously?
Do you know what 1.51 whips (which is sadly his career high minus rookie season of 20 something innings) and 5.3 k/9 = in our park?…waivers.

did you know that runs are the only stat that matters in a baseball game?

Heh
That was almost as funny as your “defense isn’t important” line.
Almost.

so if you have more hits than your opponent you win?
by Stevoo on Dec 12, 2008 7:56 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe
but more hits often means more runs. A higher WHIP most of the time means more runs allowed, too, which was slim’s point above, you obtuse dunderhead.

So if the Rangers have 1 run and 10 hits
And the Rays have 2 runs and no hits.
Who wins you acute blunderfeet?
by Stevoo on Dec 12, 2008 3:25 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not what I said
you lobotomized lugnut. I said that the vast majority of time, a pitcher with the higher WHIP is going to give up more runs. If he gives up more runs, who wins, ball sac? And the team with more hits gets more runs more often than the team with fewer hits. Got it, you dimwitted jackanape?

but runs are the only thing that matters.
are you familiar with the scoring system in baseball?
by Stevoo on Dec 13, 2008 10:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Are you familiar
with how teams score runs? Does it not make sense to you that the team that gets more hits on average will score more runs on average?
Obviously, you fucking idiot, in any given SINGLE GAME, a team can score more runs getting fewer hits, but again obviously, you fucking idiot, over time the team with more hits on average will score more runs.
Obviously, you fucking idiot, a pitcher can get a lot of help from his defense, ballpark, relievers, etc. in winning games and keeping his ERA down. But also obviously, you fucking idiot, a pitcher that allows fewer hits and walks is better than a pitcher allowing more.
Edwin Jackson was one of the luckiest pitchers in baseball last season. Without that defense behind him his ERA is likely to be much closer to 5.00 next season.

So you think hits are more important than runs?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm, i guess the Rangers should stop hitting those stupid home runs and just focus on getting lots of singles, oh and they need the LUCK of the irish.

If the Rays have 2 runs and no hits
That probably means Edwin Jackson walked the runs in.

Yep
Joyce slugged almost .500 in his rookie season – I’m really suprised DET would give him away for Edwin freaking Jackson. I think I’d be pretty upset if I was a Tiger fan right now, ‘cause Jackson only adds to DET’s stockpile of unstable, unpredictable high-BB arms.

Good
now the rangers wont be tempted to trade cruz for him.

I can't see us trading Cruz right now...
No one picked him up off waivers when he was mashing…why would they trade value now? And I can’t see anyone putting a deal together big enough to make it worth trading Cruz’s massive upside when he seems to have found it.

Jackson and Hermida
Both Jackson and Hermida were top 5 prospects in all of baseball at some point in their careers and now we would be pissed if the Rangers traded a bag of balls for them. All of this talk makes me think how incredibly lucky the Rangers will be to just get a couple of their highly touted prospects to contribute in the big leagues. And how laughable it is when I see someone on here telling us that the Rangers rotation in the next few years will be entirely filled with homegrown talent.

Prospects
I think the reason people get excited about all the prospects is that given the number of highly touted guys it increases the chances that at least a few will succeed. but sure theres a chance not a single one of them ever does.

jackson was rushed, big time, by the dodgers
probably seriously stunted his development
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
