Thursday a.m. stuff

Richard Durrett has a story this morning about the mutual interest between the Rangers and Randy Johnson, with Nolan Ryan saying that Johnson brings some qualities that not everyone brings.

Jeff Wilson says that Johnson would only get about half the annual salary Tom Hicks offered him a decade ago, when Johnson left the Astros and spurned the Rangers to sign with Arizona.

Adding Johnson would probably mean the departure of either Kevin Millwood or Vicente Padilla, and T.R. Sullivan says that the Brewers have expressed interest in Millwood.

Sullivan also mentions the rumored Saltalamacchia/Hermida trade discussions, and says the BoSox aren't interested in trading Clay Buchholz.

The Rule 5 draft is this morning, so we should know before too long what is up with Pedro Strop.

I sure wish we were hearing about the Rangers interest in Josh Johnson, instead of Randy.

who are they interested in trading? I’ve now heard that every pitcher they’ve got, they want to keep.

Except for Anibel and his torn labrum that scares me away, contrary to what I was saying the other day.

Yankees rumors; Strop

The Yankees are rumored to have offered Burnett a 5 year deal. I’m rootin’ for that since it appears that might drive Atlanta into the Millwood market.

I haven’t seen much buzz in rule 5 talk about Strop, hoping that’s a good sign.

Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Curt Schilling, Dennis Eckersley, Rod Beck, the entire 1993 Phillies, AJ Burnett, Mitch Williams are some pitchers of note. John Kruk (of special note from the 1993 Phillies), George Brett, Jose Canseco/Mark McGwire, Raffy/Juan-Gone, Larry Walker/Dante Bichette/Vinny Castilla, Robin Yount, Don Mattingly…I’m sure Babe and Mantle would’ve worn the mullet had they been allowed to back then

Here's the rule..

“If there are 14 or fewer Type A or Type B free agents available, no team can sign more than one type A or B player. If there are between 15-38, no team can sign more than two. If there are between 39 and 62, there’s a limit of three. However, teams can sign as many Type A or B free agents as they’ve lost, regardless of the limits above”

by Mike E on Dec 11, 2008 11:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So actually the yanks can sign 4

As they’ve lost 4 Type A/B players. But as for other teams, not looking into how many they’ve each lost, the limit this year is 3.

while putting up a big effort to get Sheets…I would be elated. We’d get an improvement from our “Ace” for one year, and maybe have a big trade chip at the deadline, and open up a spot for both Holland and Feliz in 2010 with Padilla’s departure. For $7 million in flexibility, with which we could sign an intriguing bullpen arm AND a 3rd base stop-gap? That’s not a bad offseason…

“I take comfort in knowin’ that…”

I agree with you about Hicks to some degree…but look at the real names Hicks missed out on signing over the past 6 years:

Zito (too much money even if he did end up pitching well…which he hasn’t)
Matsuzaka (too much money to even have a CHANCE to sign him – might’ve been of use here)
Schmidt (horribly injured)
Pettitte (would have never come here without assurance that we’d be a winner)

about the only pitcher on the free agent market that we missed out on that had a reasonable contract was Ted Lilly

1 strikeout per inning, with a chance to blossom…a CHANCE.

I don’t know. What do you think we could get for Hank that’s better? That’s my question. Because Hank certainly doesn’t seem like an option after 2009. And sure, Hank could be a valuable platoon DH/1B option for us this year, but it seems like we don’t want him at 3rd going forward, and we can’t put him at 1st with Davis and Smoak there, and our DH situation is not as wide open as it has been in the past with Hamilton’s occasional need for a day off plus a renewed glut of outfielders that can produce (Hamilton, Byrd, Cruz, Murphy, Boggs with Borbon and the new guy from the Mayberry trade on their way), plus an opportunity for Salty to DH if TT is starting, plus Max-Ram coming up soon… There’s no place for Hank.

why if JD brings in randy johnson for a couple months, lets him pitch his 300th win in arlington and then spin him off to a contender for a few prospects at the deadline, that its such a bad deal? we have a lot of guys who need more polish time and i’d like to at least act like they’ve earned a spot in the rotation that gotten it by default…

RJ

Well if we don’t get rid of one of the veterans then that means 3 spots in the rotation would be locked up by veterans (millwood, Padilla, and Johnson). Feldman is out of options and will almost certainly be given first shot at a rotation slot since he can’t be sent to the minors. Thats 4. That leaves one spot for one of Hurley, Harrison, or Mccarthy or someone else.

I don’t agree that all could use more polish. McCarthy is in his 4th year in the big leagues. All he needs to do is stay healthy. If he is healthy he would figure to be the top of the list of those three. Harrison and Hurley probably wouldn’t be stunted by spending time in AAA but I don’t think they need it to get more polish. Harrison pitched in almost 15 games last year at the big league level. Thats half a season of pitching. he may need to work on some things but nothing so significant that he needs to be in AAA to work on it. And if Hurley hadn’t gotten hurt he would have about half a season under his belt also. Having one of them in AAA to start the year is probably the most you want. To do that you need 3 rotation spots dedicated to young guys.

But you don’t go into a season hoping for injuries to give your young guys a chance if they are being blocked by a 45 year old. Injuries shouldn’t give a young player a chance to show what hes got until at least june 1st.

should be in the pen so Hurley can start.

Sorry can't agree with that

Feldman showed alot last year. Enough to be given another look as a starter before we discard him.

McMahon

posted old news about the house being off the market. That is not a new development and I don’t think it means anything.

Of additional interest ...

the article Poochie links references Melvin visiting with the Rangers about Millwood and Padilla, but says that nothing came of it. I haven’t really looked at the Brewers system, so I’m not sure what they have as far as prospects, but that reminded me of Adam’s idea about acquiring JJ Hardy. It would be interesting if he could be had in a deal centered on Milly. Then you slide MY over to third and that should significantly improve their left side defense.

I’d love to know if Hardy’s name came up.

I would bet

Milwaukee will hold onto Hardy this year. Maybe if they tank they’ll deal him in July, but they’re trying to contend right now and Escobar needs some seasoning.

Klaw

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=24064

Sean (Boston, Ma): Te sox would have to give up Buchholz to get a catcher from Texas?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:17 PM ET ) To get Teagarden, probably. I’m not sure if Bowden alone would do it.

First I’ve heard this…

Jordan (Windsor, CT): Is there a chance Lowe would sign for three years in Boston or did that ship sail in 2004?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:37 PM ET ) I think it sailed, and I don’t think the Red Sox are going to sign a starter unless it’s to a one-year deal, like Penny or Smoltz.

Might a catcher/Millwood deal make sense to get a bigger return from Boston?

Buchholz and Bard for Tea and Millwood?

Pat (Boston, MA): Can you talk people off the ledge about Clay Buchholz? I am hearing Casey Fossum comparisons which is downright riduclous

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:40 PM ET ) It’s like we forget that top prospects can stumble in their first big-league exposure and still turn out OK. Everyone’s jumping off the Salty bandwagon, the Buchholz bus, and the Hughes hovercraft. Don’t hurt yourselves and remember to roll when you hit the ground.

FWIW:

Vern (SF): Jonathan Sanchez for Delmon Young….who says ‘no’ and why?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:58 PM ET ) I have a feeling the Twins would say no. The Giants don’t seem to be that high on Sanchez. Not as high as I am, at least.

If spelling is a pet peeve of yours

Then shouldn’t you spell things correctly yourself?
