Rule 5 draft picks
The major league of the Rule 5 draft has occurred. It does not appear Pedro Strop was selected, although BA appears to have crashed. But he wasn't in the first dozen or so picks (and it wasn't thought there would be many, if any, more players than that many taken).

There was a rumor on MLBTR that someone would take Brewers catcher Lou Palmisano in the first 5 picks? Could the Red Sox trade for him and gain leverage in acquiring a catcher?
Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!
how would
palmisano give them any leverage? would anyone really believe one of the most talented and financially set franchises would be willing to go to battle with lou palmisano at C?
we can counter by pointing out the return of Willie Eyre and say we don’t even need a guy like Buchholz.
OT: Treanor released
He’s a good defensive backstop and someone I hope the Rangers would be interested in if they trade another catcher. He would be a good backup option or OKC injury replacement.

That would make Adam supremely happy.

I would like to see him be the backup to Salty/TT if one of them was dealt.

And we didn’t lose anybody in the round.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Reds have reached an agreement with lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes on a two-year, $4MM deal. It’s pending a physical.

All Done
In summation, we lost no one and gained Elio Sarmiento and Guilder Rodriguez in the AAA phase.

Can someone quickly explain to me
what is involved in the AA and AAA phases of the draft? Is it basically players who haven’t yet reached AA / AAA respectively by a certain time window and so, if drafted, need to be placed at that level in their new organization?
There's No Obligation
If a player isn’t on the AAA reserve roster (similar to majors 40-man) after 4 years as a pro (or 3 if you signed initial contract after turning 19), they’re eligible to be picked in the AAA phase. There’s no obligation to keep them in AAA for the year. You just pay $12,000 for the claim and have the player. Same thing for the AA phase, except it’s 3/2 years for development with players not on AA reserve roster and a $4,000 claim fee.

Service Time
My service time stuff might be off, but it’s the right principle.

Five organizations did not lose a player: Arizona, Boston, Oakland, Texas and the New York Mets. Those clubs are either low on minor-league talent or did a great job of protecting what they have. —Gerry Fraley

Reason #251 I'm glad Fraley isn't covering the Rangers anymore.
And I’m glad that even though our farm system is “low on minor-league talent,” at least the A’s and Red Sox are as well.

he’s a moron, but i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant low talent that was draftable.

It's the 2nd option
did a great job of protecting what they had, despite all the hand-wringing around here.
