LSB Community Prospect Project: #25
As of 12:55 PM Eastern Time, the vote was:
Greg Golson: 63

That's a tie if I ever did see one.
So, after 239 votes, Greg Golson and Tim Murphy have tied and therefore simultaneously won the right to be called the LSB Community #23 prospect!.

Time to move on to the vote for #25.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

I waited as long as I could to call the last one.
I kept waiting for one guy to take a two vote advantage so I could call it but no one ever did. Sorry if anyone is unhappy with not doing a run-off, but this way you get to vote for new guys! Yay, new guys!

Question
We get busted for tampering with some A’s front office type.
Bud Selig tells Jon Daniels, the A’s get either Warner Madrigal or Marcus Lemon — the Rangers choose which one.
You’d send them Madrigal?
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 11, 2008 12:26 PM CST up reply actions
I don't know. That's a tough one.
But that’s not really how I rank prospects. In trades I always favor giving up the younger, further away type guys. I vote based on who I think has the best chance to best player, and then adjust for things like proximity and personal preference.
Madrigal is a tough guy for me to rank. I don’t think he has pure closer stuff, and so, if that’s true, what’s his ceiling? A slightly better version of Joaquin Benoit? Is a slightly better version of Benoit more valuable than a guy I think has a great shot at being an above average 2b in the big leagues? The answer, to me, is no.
I fully acknowledge I might be underrating Madrigal, though. I go back and forth on his ceiling. He really impressed me at times this year.
And I think my Lemon mancrush is pretty well known, so I won’t get into that here.

Benoit as a Madrigal comp
I think Benoit has much better stuff.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
Madrigal seems to have the same disease
as Hurley, Harrison, Duran, Salty, and Hunter. The shiny new toy syndrome, they have predictably struggled at times in their brief stints as a Ranger and now we are all ready to dump these guys and move on to the next teenager who throws mid 90s and has a wicked slider. You know like Madrigal only better because he is 17 and in like 5 years he could develop more and become great, or he could become Madrigal if we’re lucky.
?
Your last sentence makes me confused
"Holland didn’t make that kid question his swing, he made him question his career path"
sorry
My sentence structure is poor. I meant that we get excited about a young arms because they could become great, but really we would be lucky if they turn into Madrigal. For example Wilmer Font who is all the way up at 17 is more likely to never make it to the major leagues than he is to become an all-star, and most likely if he makes it it will be as a bullpen pitcher who has pretty good stuff, but struggles some at first. In other words he could become great, but we would be lucky if he turns into another Madrigal. That is why some people could argue that Madrigal is the better prospect because he has already made it and has pitched better after a shaky start. That is all.
Cool, got it
it’s the classic argument over ceiling vs reliability
"Holland didn’t make that kid question his swing, he made him question his career path"
i would
I guess you heard Fat Joe left Atlantic.

"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Question for anyone
If a player pinch hits in the top of the 9th and hits a go ahead HR, then goes in and pitches the bottom of the 9th to secure the win, does he get credit for a win or save?

id go by rookie eligibility
but its not my list

Sorry I let you down.
But the idea was to make our list comparable to the BA list, which goes strictly off AB’s and IP’s without considering service time.

ABs vs. PAs
I still think it’s funny that MLB uses ABs instead of PAs to determine rookie eligibility. I guess a guy could have 175 PAs, walk 46 times like Jack Cust, and still be rookie eligible the next year.
by Andy Seiler on Dec 11, 2008 12:49 PM CST up reply actions
I think Madrigal
needs to go here, and then Kennil. If Gomez stays healthy last year, he is a top 20 guy.
Strop
Happy to hear that his name wasn’t called in the Rule V. Sounds like he could contribute this year.
I think he's going to keep doing them...

Strop
After reading that he should be throwing by 3/1 I have bumped him into the teens in my rankings.
3 swing and miss pitches that could net him a closer roll in a couple years; I bet we see him in Sept.
Who are the ZPhillips fans out there?

I think he might make a ML reliever
but I haven’t voted for him.
Deceptive delivery, decent fastball, comfortable with his curve. He has the makings of a decent LH reliever.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
Not Guilty.
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. 45 given up in the 1st quarter. Wow. But still we're better than Washington! Oh and, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-10 baby!
Arias...
Has he just lost everything…? I thought he played fairly well when in the bigs last year, and he used to be a very highly regarded prospect. Considering most of these guys this low won’t ever seriously contribute to a major league club does the fact that he has already played and reached that level not count for something? I voted for him because he proved to me last year he could be a serviceable utility player right now, and I still think if things clicked just right for him he could be a real difference maker.
Mitch Moreland
I just think he has really come on the last yr or so. Be interesting to see if the Rangers move him to pitcher though.
Captain Wonderful begs to differ.

madrigal shouldn't even be on the list

Sigh.
Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospects lists are based on projections of a player’s long-term worth after discussions with scouting and player-development personnel. All players who haven’t exceeded the major league rookie standards of 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched (without regard to service time) are eligible. Ages are as of April 1, 2009.

See ...
no one picked Clark Murphy. I’m wondering if that guy might be the next rocket up the charts.
Kind of a lonely hunch I got it looks like.
I really like Murphy
He’s going to be on my 9 to watch in ‘09 list. He can really hit. If he’s limited to 1B his future will probably be with another org, but he could definitely build up his value in the next few seasons.
What are your thoughts on Whittleman?

Not a toolsy player
If he can be more aggressive at the plate he might have enough offensive potential to make things interesting. The probably is that he isn’t going to be a major league 3B and his bat is probably not going to make him a starting COF.
At the plate
He almost seems like another Blalock..

Yeah, it’d help if he could play some avg-ish OF. But it would also help if he gets sent to Hickory and continues to rake. The stuff I read about his HS years and his AZRL performance has me very interested in the guy. Here’s some Jason Cole action from a September interview …
"I’ve played first base pretty much my whole life, so I’m comfortable with it. They are still telling me they’re going to move me to the outfield. It’s just a matter of getting at-bats right now."
.
Murphy expects to work in the outfield when he attends fall instructional league in late-September. The left-hander looks forward to using instructs as a valuable learning experience.
me too
I’m kind of surprised he only has 3 votes right now. Murphy’s the best hitter left, and honestly none of those pitchers really do it for me. I’d rather have a big bat than a closer unless that closer is absolutely dominant, and I don’t see Madrigal or Strop being dominant closers. I like Lemon, but I’d only vote for him after Murphy.
He may shoot up the charts a bit
but I wouldn’t answer the highest ceiling question with his name.

Kennil Gomez for me
Good control, MJH says he’s got a ton of movement on his fastball and his WHIP was insane this year. Strikeouts did drop significantly, and the FIP suffered as a result, but he might have been rushed into starting a bit too soon this year and still put up good overall #’s despite having to be shut down with a tired arm.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
