Littleton trade return - Beau Vaughan
Per TR's blog,
"The Rangers have acquired pitcher Beau Vaughan from the Boston Red Sox to complete the Wes Littleton trade. He was 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA at Double A Portland and 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA at Triple A Pawtucket. He had 16 saves at Portland. He had 69 strikeouts in 58 innings with 48 hits allowed."
------------
TR fails to mention that hes 27 and has a 1.45 career whip in the minors. Here's his baseballcube page.
Still don't understand getting rid of littleton.

Vaughan
Per SoxProspects.com:
Aggressive righty has a fastball reaching 91 mph with good sinking movement. Vaughan is able to throw his biting slider for strikes often. Four strong pitches, but needs a little work on keeping a consistent delivery for all of his pitches. Gets a lot of groundball outs. Struggles against left-handed batters. Fierce with a good mound presence. Good control. Vaughan has moved through the system slowly but surely – he was actually drafted the round before Jonathan Papelbon in 2003. Despite being old for his leagues along the way, Vaughan still has a very good chance to be an effective MLB reliever.
This version ain't on the 40.

He's Not
And it looks like they waited to finish the deal until he was passed on in the Rule 5 draft.

he's not
but that would have been really dumb to trade for a guy on the 40
Mandatory reading before suggesting a trade
Is the trade completed now?
I remember there was this whole, 1 prospect for certain, 2 if Wes makes the Sox’s roster. Is that still in play, or is it over?
I HATE this trade
I would’ve rather taken a chance on some 17 year old.
AFL
If you look at his AFL numbers, you have to be impressed. He’s just a lot older than I’d expect in a return.
vaughn
can we get him some black framed glasses with skull and crossbones over the nose bridge

Beau
This is the second reliever named Beau that JD has traded for. Does anyone else get the feeling that if there were a reliever named Beau Murphy that JD would somehow manage to bring him to the Rangers?
If we got a Beau Murphy
He’d automatically become a starter.
Nice AFL pic for the Vaughanster
He looks like he got a
stick up his butt.
natural reaction to being traded to the rangers.
the preceding post was a great success.

And another quality pic
Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. -- John Hinderacker

Sidearm
Someone forgot to mention he’s a sidearmer.

Littleton wasn't going to bring back anything special.
No biggie.

Q&A
ScotMartin (TX): Texas is making some noise on Johnson and Sheets. Do you think they will sign any major free agents this off season?
John Perrotto: No major free agents but I do think they have a legimate shot at Sheets, who is kinda major.
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.
Jindal - 2012
Sheets has fallen off the major list for some reason
I guess CC, Tex, KRod, and Manny just are a lot sexier names to have out there. Good for us, I think
Remember when
people wanted to trade Tex for Sheets and Brewers fans were opposed.
"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland
Similarities
He reminds me a lot of Casey Hoorelbeke, who I watched dominate AA in 2006. Sidearmer who became hittable in AAA and was old for his level. Hopefully Vaughan doesn’t pan out like that.
Hmm, i wonder who asked this question...heh
Katy (Houston): Do you think that the Rangers will trade Saltalamacchia? And if so, to whom and for what? Thank you.
John Perrotto: I think they want to see if Salty can live up to the hype, though I think they would deal him for front-line young pitchers like Masterson.
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.
Jindal - 2012
Masterson?
front-line?

John Perrotto: It’s all up to you, Ben.

interesting...
My gut tells me Max Ramirez will have the best career of all of the Rangers’ catchers.

Or maybe he becomes a DH.
He could end up being the best hitter out of all the C’s for sure if he stays a C but hard to see him staying there in our organization.

It's going to come down to Davis or Ramirez as your DH for the future.
I’d rather have the righty.

I'll take the guy who scares pitchers
And I think Davis will scare pitchers.

id rather have davis
he has true massive power. max can hit dingers all day in frisco but will he be more of a doubles hitter in the big leagues with 18-22 HR a year? still valuable, but not what i think davis will do

last one...i think
dsnengnr (Arkansas): Who are the Marlins willing to give up for Max Ramirez?
John Perrotto: Not Jeremy Hermida and that’s a deal breaker, at least right now.
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.
Jindal - 2012
That's so strange to me
I don’t see why they would trade Max for Hermida.

there is obviously another component to this
because we certainly don’t need another OF. The thing is, if JD is building this team to really compete in 2010, as of today our OF is where some of our biggest question marks remain. Byrd will be a FA after this season, Murphy still falls in the gray area between legit corner OF and 4th OF, and Cruz could be huge and could be a dud. If JD thinks Hermida comes into the mix and becomes our 2nd best OF, then perhaps he is willing to gamble. Hermida is the sort of player who could bust out moving from a pitchers park to a hitters park.
I like the idea of a deal involving Max with Hermida
but not Salty’.

i am not even sure
i like Max for Hermida. He is not a great defensive OF and some scouts have said they question his work ethic.
some scout was asked about
all of the Marlins’ potentially available players at the beginning of the offseason. i could be wrong, but i remember the scout saying that hermida certainly has talent, but he looked like he was half assing it last year.
I believe I remember
something along those lines too, FWIW.

Jeremy Hermida does nothing for me. No passion for the game. Once Fredi took him out of the lineup down the stretch, his lower lip was dragging. I saw him take BP late in the year and he looked like he was getting ready for an A-ball game. I have my doubts about him. No interest here

I don't like that either
Although, like you, I do think Hermida has plenty of unrealized potential. It’s just that we are really down to one major trade chip that is superfluous around here, and I’d cringe to see that used on anything but a starting pitcher.
The Rangers will improve when the rotation improves, and adding Hermida does nothing to that end. Max or Salty is the only viable, non-damaging to the future, way to trade for a young starter that I can see.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
this is worth noting:
Dante (NY): With the Yankees signing CC and most likely add Burnett or Sheets, is Phil Hughes still as untouchable as ever, even with their huge need for a young/solid catcher?
John Perrotto: They are willing to trade Phil Hughes, who other teams are starting to see as really nothing more than a No. 3 or No. 4 starter.
Cruz and Blalock?

Which part
about him being available or about him only being a #3 or #4? I don’t think teams see him that way, and if they did I don’t see the Yankees selling low.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Yeah that part
and I agree. He’s probably availble in theory, but not under the notion that he’s a 3/4. At any rate, there just hasn’t been anything that’s happened that would lead someone who thought he was a front roto guy (and the Yankees obviously did) to drastically alter their opinion of his talent. He has been prone to non-arm injuries lately, but nothing has happened to his stuff – or his good command, other than a really inconsistent AFL.
I think he’s just talking out his rear or listening to someone else who is.
