Conner staying to lure R. Johnson?
Interesting line in the TR article about Randy Johnson.. maybe this clears up the "why?" behind bringing Conner back.
Johnson is also close to Mark Connor, the Rangers' former pitching coach who is still with the organization as a consultant.

New rule
Read through the existing posts before posting a diary that is really just a comment — that has already been discussed.

Maybe Jeff @ LL's "bad fanpost ban" rule should be implemented...
I don’t mind the fanposts if people actually put some thought into what is happening, but just throwing something up there for no real reason is kind of a waste. That 75 word limit should be enforced somewhat – and pasting a long quote shouldn’t really count.
by JBImaknee on Dec 11, 2008 3:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That 75 word limit doesn't really prevent crappy fanposts.
And it just doesn’t fit in a bunch of cases. For example, when we put up the discussion threads about Cowboy games or the week’s college games, that doesn’t really require 75 words to do. I think it would be more effective to just drop the word limit and police the fanposts a little more.
by Athos on Dec 11, 2008 3:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Even an OT college game thread can get 75 words
Say what you think is going to happen. Talk about what the implications are of the various games. Cut and paste a few of the interesting Vegas lines. If it merits having an OT discussion thread, you should be able to write 5 sentences about it.
I agree that 75 words is not a sufficient condition for a valid fanpost, but I can see the logic that it should be a necessary condition.
by JBImaknee on Dec 11, 2008 3:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Sure you can do that.
But why should it be necessary? The whole point is to open a thread to discuss the game or games. It’s a waste of time to have to compose a paragraph remarking on some random b.s. just to open up a general discussion thread on a specific subject.
The 75-word limit is like the nanny state provision of the blog world.
by Athos on Dec 11, 2008 4:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed
but there can be exemptions to GD threads of any kind (various sports). Maybe a winter meetings thread or a draft thread
There aren’t that many other scenarios where you would need an exemption.
Although, I can’t tell if 75 words is too long. It might be but I’ve only made one fanpost and it was supposed to be long.

if there is a moderator for fanposts, i vote ed do it
let him read through what is simply a 2 sentence + 1 sentence quote + link
and deicde that it shoud/shouldnt go on here
jeeze guys come on. we dont need a new fanpost every 5 secs with ever shred of info
suggestion: AMJ/Zy make a front page post for winter meetings news every day that has to do with the rangers
then let someone make a winter meetings fanpost that deals with other news from the winter meetings (tball’s attmpted catchall post) and post everything there

too logical
instead of posting that here, you might want to create a fanpost suggesting that

That will never work.
We need a fanpost with a poll, asking if we should do the above. Then we need a runoff poll…

I think the solution is to bring back the Penalty Box
where violators can get listed in shame
by JBImaknee on Dec 11, 2008 3:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I know.
Seems like back in the day people would respect the penalty box, feel their shame, delete the diary, and all was forgiven… That was back when players actually ran hard to first, caught with two hands, and respected the veterans on the team.

OT (?) Possible Milwaukee Trade
This is simply in my mind, nothing has been reported, no rumors I’ve heard from my cozy desk in Plano. Nothing like that, didn’t want to start a separate fanpost (and didn’t have the time to read through 1000 posts to see where this should go.)
If Milwaukee is really interested in Millwood, let’s investigate. So I did a little. In the words of Mike Rhyner… “Their system SUUUUCKS.” But for the sake of getting Millwood’s salary off our books, we’ll take a gander.
Millwood (TEX eating $3 million of his salary this year and none next year) to MIL
Mat Gamel (3B) – Very solid numbers throughout the minors. Metcalf seems to not be the answer, so try this kid out. 23 and has a taste of the majors.
Bobby Bramhall (RHRP) – Smallish reliever, possible ROOGY (?). 3/1 K/BB ratio in A+ ball. Local kid from Ft. Worth via Rice. Don’t know much about the guy, but he could possibly be organizationl filler with the potential to be a Feldman type in 2-3 years.
Cody Adams (RHSP) – 22 year old prospect playing in the Pioneer League (may have to be a PTBNL). 14 games this past season (playing as a 21 year old in a rookie league, could be on an accelerated track like some college pitchers) with 5 starts, about a hit an inning kid but only 3 HR given up in 54.1 IP and a little over a 2/1 K/BB ratio.
Let’s be honest, this is really a salary dump and the Brewers system is horrid. Replace Millwood’s spot on the 40 with Gamel. Replace his salary with Sheets and see if you can sneak a guy through waivers for Sheet’s spot. Really, the 40 trumps all, just ask Dirk.

I think Bramhall is a lefty
so it’d be really hard for him to be a ROOGY, but I agree that’d be impressive if he pulled it off. I used to enjoy watching him at Rice, and I’d imagine the Rice curse on injuries wouldn’t be as big a deal since he’s likely going to be a short reliever.
by JBImaknee on Dec 11, 2008 5:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You're not getting Mat Gamel
Even if you did, you’d probably be better off putting Beasticon at 3rd. Gamel’s defense is that bad.
by LiamP on Dec 11, 2008 5:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree completely
No way they’d be willing to trade Gamel, and if they were it sure wouldn’t be for Kevin Millwood.
More realistically I wouldn’t mind Taylor Green. His defense holds up decently at 3rd, they were even thinking about putting him at 2nd last year. While he doesn’t have tons of power he has enough to not be a complete drain on the lineup, and his plate discipline seems very good. While he may not be ready right now I’m certain he’d be better than Metcalf.
by TRanger on Dec 11, 2008 5:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
3B
As long as we have Micheal Young we do not need to be trading for an almost ML ready 3B prospect.
Im all for Millwood trade talk or anyone for that matter but 3B is not an area of need at the ML level for the long term as long as #10 is still on this club. Now a 18 year old 3B prospect in rookie ball that is a different story.
