Time to move on to the vote for #26.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

I look at him differently
now that he feels like he’s actually part of the organization. Really, the question there is his health. If he didn’t have the stress fracture (or the potential to have problems with his arm action in the future) he’d either already be in Colorado’s pen or in someone’s top ten prospects.

i had him in the late 20s
due to his injury without regard for rule 5 issues. I moved him up to mid-teens after seeing that his rehab was going well and that he does not have a soft-tissue injury. The rangers expect him to pitch off the mound around 3/1 (per the rocky mountain news).

Salty threw out Julio Borbon trying to swipe 2nd base last night in the DWL.
Hit a HR again, too. I’m kinda warming to the idea of just relaxing about our
catchers and letting ’em battle it out in 2009. Aim high, JD.

He still only has 49 ABs, but he hasn’t really slowed down at all: .367/.500/.857 with 7 HR (one per seven AB) and a 9/6 BB/SO.

I think that's the best approach.
I had a dream Teagarden was traded for Buccholz last night. I’d be ok with that I suppose, but I’d rather let the three of them fight it out, maybe with Max serving as the right handed DH the team apparently needs.

yeah
I guess the only downside of that would be that it could stunt Max’s growth as a catcher, if that is still a consideration. I actually was pleasantly surprised with his performance behind the plate last year. Still, I’m with it.

I'm sure he'd be getting time on the side and in practice to work on his catching
I don’t understand why it would be that big of a deal to have him as the DH in the majors. What all does he need to work on? Footwork and throwing to 2nd? He can do that in practice.

I'd be about eleven different kinds of okay with Teagarden for Buchholz.
Also, I’m glad to finally get confirmation I’m not the only one who dreams of Rangers trades :)

Once we get to that point
I think it’s all about philosophy. There is some value in bench players, but I value the guy who has a pretty good chance to be a regular or a nothing over one who is extremely likely to be a bench player and nothing else, but I respect the alternative view. For me the question on the guy who projects as a backup is whether he adds something above (don’t want to be trite and say replacement level) the parade of available guys each year. And Lemon may do that, if his OBP continues to be a positive force.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 12, 2008 10:16 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess for me
Given his pedigree, the positive buzz that surrounded him when he was drafted, the strong reports about his makeup, his above average defense, and his impressive OBP skills at a young age, he sounds like a top 25 to 30 to me.

The anti-Lemon crowd
is not organized enough. We’ve split our votes for 3 or 4 guys, and we’ll probably let this Lemon group win with a weak plurality. Its like John McCain in the Republican primary
I hope the dirk is happy when Lemon wins with the lowest percentage of any of the candidates. Maybe we should just stop the voting at 25 prospects to keep it from happening.

Marcus Lemon
is far from the worst choice on this list. He is neither underperforming (Hurley) or injured (Diamond) or old for his league. He has 1 recognizable skill right now, but it is the one that is the most difficult to learn. Why the hate?

Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along a Japanese report from Sanspo: the Rangers are preparing a three-year offer for pitcher Koji Uehara worth more than $10MM. Newman says the Rangers like Uehara as a reliever yet he wants to start. The Mets have also expressed interest (link in Japanese).

Sickels doesn't have great love for the top tier in Oak...
I have a feeling there will be a lot of complaining by the A’s faithful on this one.
I am real curious how the top 5 for Texas grades out as well as who he picks at 20-25 for Texas considering how hard Sickels grades low minors prospects.

15 B's of some sort
Impressive. But only 2 B+’s and no A’s.
Sickels is a tough grader, but you’d have to think at least one of our top 3 hits an A- (probably Holland and Smoak – he seems to discount risk a lot, which is the one thing Feliz has against him). At the top, I think the Rangers have to have more A-‘s and B+’s.
But would we have 15 B’s total? I think the top 12 on this list are at least a B-, but I can’t see Sickels giving Boscan, NeRa, or Kiker a B-.
by JBImaknee on Dec 12, 2008 1:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
What I like about Sickels' grading system
is that you really have to earn being ranked as an A prospect. It makes it easier to see who is in the truly elite talent of the minor leagues and who is just a great prospect but still ahs a lot to prove.

Shit
we’d have to make way for LSB 3.0 to pull off something that nuanced.
I think it’s a great idea though and would add a new wrinkle, certainly. We don’t need Thedir K. Atron getting lazy on us. That’s the last thing we would need.
After that, we can have Ben synthesize the lists and grades into a “community project analysis,” wherein he discounts the future production of the major league club based on LSB’s evaluations. Standard deviation?

principal components analysis on everyone’s votes to determine how different individuals cluster in their perspective of prospects. We’d probably get some clearly defined groups for the high-ceiling, high-risk lovers and the low-ceiling, low-risk comfort people. Eh, probably not.
He went his first full season as a pro without pitching in a full season league and has some pretty big questions about his control and delivery. The stuff is there, but top 150 might be a bit high. Close though, imo.

9 votes for Arias?
I guess they didn’t see him on TV triple bounce his throws from second…
by Goyogringo on Dec 12, 2008 3:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
It takes a lot of skill
to triple bounce with accuracy
by JBImaknee on Dec 12, 2008 7:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
our catcher in HS would attempt to bounce it off the top of the mound
he almost decapitated out star pitcher thta way one time lol
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

The Lemonian era
Has begun!
Well… the Lemon-on-the-LSB-Community-Prospect-Project-list-ian era has begun at least.

Adrian Cardenas vs. Marcus Lemon
I just looked at Cardenas’ numbers and im having a hard time seeing how he’s a top 8 or so prospect in the A’s orginization and Marcus Lemon isnt a top 25 in our system. There is some disconnect here, I just dont see how he’s that much better than Lemon.
quick comp:
Lemon – 19 to 20 yrs old in A+
~.295, .374, .434 OPS 808
Cardenas 20 yrs old in A+ and AA, mostly in A+ His numbers are better in A+ only, but not by a whole lot, he does have nice SB numbers, but not a ton of them.
~.296, .364, .399 OPS 763 -
They are very similar in that they are both SS who bat LH and will likely both move to 2B at some point. They both do a good job getting on base, with Lemon doing a slightly better job. Lemon has a little more power, but that might also be due to playing in the Cal league. The big thing that i think people get caught up with is that Cardenas is more ‘toolsy’, evident in that he has more speed. However, from an age, level, and productivity factor, Lemon is even with him if not better.
I just wanted to see what Cardenas looked like after seeing him ranked so high in the A’s system and i realized that Lemon has an almost identical statistical profile yet is ranked much lower.

sorry
about the line through Cardenas’ stats, im obviously clumsy with this posting system… Also of note, Lemon will be 20 starting out in AA next year, thats really young. I hope he can hold up this statistical profile, b/c then you have to consider him a very legit 2b prospect.

Cardenas
He has more power projection than Lemon, more arm strength than Lemon, and is considered a better athlete than Lemon.
Also, Lemon put up his numbers in A+ in a very hitter friendly league, while Cardenas spent most of 2008 in a very pitcher-friendly high-A league.
Basically, Cardenas has a lot more projectability than Lemon does.

Plus
A’s fans overrate him just a tad in my opinion.

Well
BA has him ranked #5 in the A’s system.

Cardenas
is by a lot of accounts, a butcher @ 2B. He is better because he hit better at a tougher league and in a tougher park. He’s about the same athletically as Lemon.

im not
so sure he was better overall in his A+ time, if you combine them both he really isnt better than lemon, and how much of a difference does it make to play in the FSL compared to the cal league, 10 points in his OPS?

Cardenas > Lemon
I don’t think it is even close. They aren’t in the same ballpark.
by Adam J. Morris on Dec 13, 2008 5:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
if only that was saying something
lets see a guy whose in the top 5 of a very strong farm system (top 5 in the game) vs someone whose probably not in the top 20 for another top 5 farm syseem
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

A much better comparison
would be Cardenas and Andrus. I’d rate Andrus a bit higher, but it’s a LOT closer than Cardenas vs. Lemon.
