Wow, you nailed it.

I was thinking “Is that Freddie Fender?”

Damn, that was laugh out loud funny to me.

The problem is...

…I think you and I are the only ones here who appreciate Mr. Show…

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 12, 2008 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

No...

and I’ll probably be burned at the stake for this, judging by the outpouring of vitriol I’ve seen displayed from users of this site directed at Mr. Show, but, I really think Carlin is over-rated and Mr. Show is certified genius.

But, what do I know? I do find stand-up to be lesser comedy as a whole, though.

by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 12, 2008 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Carlin was funnier...

…back in the day. I think Gallagher co-opting some of Carlin’s schtick ends up retroactively tainting Carlin.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 12, 2008 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

He is funny...

I just have a hierarchy in mind of the levels in which I value comedy in its portrayals. Stand up ranks lower than say, a novel with considerable wit. This isn’t to say I don’t like a poop joke. Hell, “This Guy’s Taint” is one of my favorite things ever and the brow might never be lower. There is also a lot to be said about being able to perform comedy, which Carlin did. He wrote and performed and that is a difficult task.

I’m actually working on a book about comedy in all of its many forms as an eruditely art form.

The problem is, a book about intellectually considering comedy isn’t that funny. There should be a way to discuss the complexities of why something funny is funny while making it funny. That’s the struggle.

by ghostofErikThompson on Dec 12, 2008 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

Deconstructing comedy is a waste

Also, their is nothing more sad than seeing someone trying to explain a joke that someone else didn’t get.

Nolan Ryan is the Greatest Pitcher ever, because Google says so.

by DJCahill on Dec 12, 2008 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

True enough...

about explaining a joke. That is an awful exercise. I’m not really going for that.

I don’t really think deconstructing anything is a waste. Comedy is so subjective that it is hard to deconstruct, but it doesn’t mean, at least to me, that it is wasteful to try. And really, my overall goal isn’t to spit out a formula for the perfect joke, but to categorize and give historical reference to why we laugh and what we laugh at.

I’m mostly wanting to find out if comedy really does equal tragedy plus time.

Deconstructing Mr. Show...

From what I’ve seen… it’s just taking a bit, and letting it snowball…

That’s just lazy.

meet me at the mawwl... it's goin dowwn...

by oc on Dec 12, 2008 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

Not always!

Some of my favorite stuff is when a humorous idea is drawn out. I don’t think it has to mean it is lazy. I could be though, and it might even be the point. I made this last night, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMl289ZlIuM and it is probably the laziest thing I’ve ever made. But that was intentional.

I showed it to a friend and she laughed harder as it proceeded. I showed it to another friend and he now thinks I’m a sort of comedy pariah.

I can like something that feels like it NEVER ends and gets more and more ridiculous the longer you watch it. Of course, again, it’s all subjective.

That really hurt me,

and not it a good way. Oh well, that’s how it goes, eh?

No. 49: UCB's Ass Pennies.

UCB is probably the most under-appreciated show I know.

Ass Pennies, Pro Thunderball, The Hot Chicks Room, The Bucket of Truth..

…the Lady of the Lake, anything involving Steve Youngblood, Little Donnie…I mean, I could go on and on. All of them just hysterical.

I’ve had that bookmarked on my computer for some time. Every once in a while I pick one and watch, great stuff.

I love old comedy, Sid Caesar era and all that. Victor Borge is a favorite since I’m a classically trained musician, hilarious.

Ramirez has been on Florida’s radar since the General Managers Meetings in November. In return for Ramirez, a source said, Texas is seeking a pitching prospect like lefty Aaron Thompson or right-hander Ryan Tucker.

by Longhorn on Dec 12, 2008 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

Tucker

is far from crappy. Florida would have to increase the offer to land Ramirez (they know that), but Tucker is definitely an intriguing pitcher.

by jparks77 on Dec 12, 2008 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

what does tucker project as?

just looking at his minor league #’s on the surface they appear fairly average, about a 1:1 gb/fb ratio and he does K that many hitters

by studcrackers on Dec 12, 2008 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

If his breaking ball doesn't develop

Tucker profiles as a late inning reliever. His heater has monster-monster potential and his change is decent.

If he can learn to throw a semi-decent slider, he could probably become a solid middle of the rotation horse.

by jparks77 on Dec 12, 2008 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

What do you think of Ricky Vanden Hurk Jason?

Seems like he actually misses more bats than Tucker and supposedly has a better breaking ball.

by LSJ on Dec 12, 2008 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Henricus VandenHurk

Not really a fan. He has a very good fastball, and a very cool name, but his comps aren’t really that good, his command is below-average, and he has serious flyball tendencies.

by jparks77 on Dec 12, 2008 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

His name trumps all of that

Nobody cares how well you can command your fastball when your name is Henricus.
