Poll on the Dallas Observer story

The Dallas Observer, as I think everyone knows, is reporting that Evan Grant is moving to the Cowboys beat at the DMN, and the DMN will stop having a beat reporter covering the Rangers, electing to simply run the FWST's Ranger stories.

If this is, in fact, the case, what is your reaction?

Cast your vote...

My biggest problem...

…is having to read the FWST’s sub par commentary and not have Grant covering the Rangers. Earlier today I sent an e-mail to the Dallas News’ sports editors just voicing my opinion that Grant is the best and they are making a mistake by allowing the FWST to cover them wholesale. If you would like to do the same, their e-mail addresses are gleavell@dallasnews.com (Garry Leavell) and byates@dallasnews.com (Bob Yates). I am not advocating bitching or something, but just a little support for our man Grant can’t hurt.

I agree

I am a huge fan of Evan Grant’s coverage and I think that Rangers coverage will suffer drastically from his loss! What a disappointment…I never even read FWST’s lousy coverage.

FtWorth StarTlegram Taking the DMN Beat???

I have to be sujected to Randy Galloway for my sTRangers’ information?

Ugh.

I’d much rather have the DMN’s more polished, professional slant on the sTrangers rather than the hysteric, Yellow Journalism proferred by the cross-MetroPlex little brothers.

And it's not just Galloway.

It’s also that hack Jennifer Floyd Engel, who knows about as much about sports as my sister’s parakeet, which died in 1984 ~ and writes about as well, to boot.

It’s also Jim Reeves and Gil LeBreton, who (I’m told) recently had a conversation about why so many baseball fans base their opinions on this newfangled approach to the game.

Jeff Wilson is the only baseball guy around the Startelegram who’s worth a damn, and let’s face it, he’s not nearly as entertaining as Grant.

I can't say

To be honest, I’ve never kept track of who reported for which paper. I just read the links when someone suggests it, but I have noticed I like EG’s coverage much better.

“Makes sense” Don’t know because I’ve never really compared the two papers’ coverage.
“Don’t care” Actually, I do care since I like EG.
“It sucks. I like having both papers cover the Rangers” can’t say that either.

My vote is the wrong person was reassigned to cover the Cowboys.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

So what's the feeling on the Rangers in the DFW area?

JJT implies that no one cares. Is that true? I have an HS friend that lives just outside of FW and I’m the one to give him a little Rangers preview before the season starts (he’s a big baseball fan but likes the Yankees). Are residents that apathetic?

On the one hand, the DMN could be making a big mistake since I think the organization is about to turn a corner in the next two years*. On the other, it wouldn’t be hard to jump on the bandwagon when the time is right.

  • I’ve been going on and on about the Rangers farm system with the Girl, and she’ll eventually say “who cares? You guys have sucked for how long?” After which we quit talking for 48 hours or more. Two WS wins turns people into dicks.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

i like evan a lot...

he should be able to find employment elsewhere (a baseball town) if he is one of the best beat writers in the country.

to me, this is not a slap on evan grant. this is an acceptance that the newspaper business is dead. the cowboys are where the money is (at least in dallas), and baseball is a distant 2nd or 3rd in this town. should the DMN force themselves to continue losing money just so that a handful of people can get a fresh perspective on one of the worst franchises in baseball?

by sam in so cal on Dec 12, 2008 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

It seems weird

Player salaries and owner revenues are constantly going up.

And money to cover the game shrivels.

Cause for a lot of people, the coverage is the whole experience (during the winter meetings, especially).

Papers and baseball do two different things, but they scratch each others’ backs so much…the thought comes to mind that MLB could reimburse papers for beat writer salaries.

It probably wouldn’t work in practice, but the mutual benefits are there in a utopian version.

I just can’t imagine MLB being glad about less coverage.

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Dec 12, 2008 12:57 PM CST reply actions

That's crazy

I admire the nobility of that thought, but mlb has mlb.com with its own beat writers. I’m sure they’re licking their chops at the thought of having fewer competing beat writers in each town. People will just read blogs and watch tv for news like they already are. This is very sad to me, but the baseball world will go on without skipping a beat.

by t ball on Dec 12, 2008 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

additional thoughts

Because of the revenue from mlb.com and the debut of the cable channel, MLB actually has a vested interest in less competition, and you’re suggesting they subsidize the writers. Nope, the papers have to adapt to survive, just like mlb.com took advantage of an opportunity.

Coverage of everything, not just baseball, is becoming the domain of specialized niche sites. The news papers will figure out something and/or just go away. Likely the coverage they provide will just continue to be split up among several other sites.

So

How do we get Grant to replace TR?

by FuturePants on Dec 12, 2008 1:11 PM CST up reply actions

TR works for MLB

He used to be with the Star-Telegram. Unless the mlb job is what you meant.

Baseball is excited

about mlb.com ascending only if they don’t mind losing the public that read newspapers exclusively.

My mom: cannot work a computer. So, one example.

That crowd might be irrelevant in the big picture…who knows how many people committedly inform themselves with newspapers? I still think of 40-somethings as newspaper subscribers, even if they pad it with Internet content.

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Dec 12, 2008 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

I think this is a good point

The Rangers have a problem selling their team, less coverage doesn’t help. Hicks better chip in some bucks to retain the coverage, because less coverage + a declining Payroll = declining interest. Most people are not interested in who the top 10 Ranger prospects are today, they want to see results.

by SanDiegoKev on Dec 12, 2008 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

There is plenty of information to be found on the interwebs

This is where I go for my Rangers news. People on here know way more than most beat-writers and the in-depth analysis on here is way more useful than the BS “stories” most writers spew. I voted ’Don’t care’.

by hiafex on Dec 12, 2008 1:22 PM CST reply actions

Its not the analysis that worries me

Evan was a great source of information. The internet is great for opinion, but bloggers just don’t have the same sources of information as beat writers like Grant had.

Right

And Evan

Didn’t mind talking in a blog or forum. Not sure, but for instance I don’t see TR doing that.

Important info would be reported one way or another

I’ve never paid enough attention to who writes the stories I read to realize whether or not I will miss what EG has provided. Hopefully we’ll get that same info from other sources. If not, this does suck.

by hiafex on Dec 12, 2008 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

the important stuff

is a matter of perspective. There is plenty going on behind the scenes that some might consider more important to know. And Evan’s Q&As were great. Unlike TR’s, he would take good questions and give a lot of insight about what the organization thought.

by Gdawg on Dec 12, 2008 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

I think a better poll question would be

What will you do now that Grant isn’t a Rangers writer anymore and the FWST is the DFW source of Rangers info? I know I’m probably never going to the DMN site again outside of some Hindman blog posts.

FWIW

I don’t think they’ll keep the blog going if they aren’t going to cover the Rangers themselves. No one has told me anything yet, but that’s my best guess.

by mjh on Dec 12, 2008 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

right

because we can never get too much insight on how great CJ Wilson is (by the numbers) vis–à–vis other closers…

perhaps move over to the fwst blog?

i know they started one not long ago, hopefully theirs can pick up the slack if the dmn does indeed get rid of the blog.

on how long Grant puts up with having to cover football before he finds a job elsewhere to cover another baseball team?
