OT: Heisman Trophy Poll
While I recognize that many no longer care about the Heisman, this year's trophy is the closest in years. Two of the candidates play in the Rangers' region and so I thought we should have a Lone Star Ball poll. In the comments please feel free to include the order you rank the players or your reason for picking the player you did.
My vote goes to McCoy because I think he did the most with the least. I am an OU fan, but I think Bradford's supporting cast is much more talented than McCoy's. I would vote Bradford second and Tebow third.

Heisman
I say colt, not just because I like the Longhorns but when you compare all of the stats, passing, running, accuracy, etc he is the better all around between him, bradford and tebow.
if colt doesnt win bradford deserves to.

I'm not a UT or OU fan
I would have to say Colt. Is he breaking a record this year for accuracy. If not, he’s close to it.
If Bradford wins, I can understand that. These are two great quarterbacks.
If Tebow wins, it would be a travesty and a pure media politically driven pick.
Wait 'til the year after next

Colt
…has eye poppingly gaudy numbers in some games, and is merely ok in others. His averages are really high, but his performance is a little uneven. Bradford would have my vote BABIES.

And
Colt lost to A&M twice in the past, but should that negatively affect his Heisman standing? Should good performance vs. OU two years ago positively affect his Heisman standing? I just keep things confined to this year.

He has 40 TDs and 2 turnovers the entire season
by Beasticon on Dec 12, 2008 12:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Numbers
He also has the lowest completion percentage , fewest passing yards, second in rushing yards and second in yards per carry.
Colt has the same number of td’s but yes he had 7 interceptions. He also threw for 3,445 yards to Tebows 2,515.
The case for bradford is he has 53tds and 6 int’s. and way more passing yards, and is second among the 3 in completion percentage.

McCoy
Late 1st – earl 2nd right now, potentially top 10, better than Stafford.. who some have going to the Lions with the first pick, which would be a horrible pick, imo.
Tebow, I have no idea.

Currently projected as high as a possible second round pick for the 2010 NFL Draft, the 6-3, 210 lb McCoy certainly has the right make-up to success at the NFL level.

it's b/c
he has all the phyiscal tools and has the size, plus he’s in a pro style offense. matt ryan came from a pro offense last year and was able to come in this year and do quite well for himself, i didnt think he’d do that this year given his INT #‘s last year but he’s doing it.
i doubt stafford will do the same especially w/the lions but who knows
by studcrackers on Dec 13, 2008 8:07 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ryan had way less talent surrounding him.
I just think Stafford would absolutely be another bad bad draft pick for the Lions.. Given the weakness of this draft, the Lions should trade out of that pick, and collect some more high round picks to go along with what they got from us.

this isnt a weak draft
from a qb perspective ive heard it is but there’s a lot of depth, especially in the middle rounds. if u want a lineman or db this is your draft
and i realize ryan had less talent but he still threw 20 int’s, im just saying they both come from pro style offenses, perhaps stafford can come in next season and step in and perform

It pains me to say it as a UT homer
But, Bradford played better when it mattered. Even though he lost to UT, he still went 28-39 for 387, 71% completion & 5 TDs. He had one game below 255 pass yds, one game below 55% completion, no games with less than 2 tds, and no games with more than 2 ints. He may have a better supporting cast, but he came up big in the big games.

Bradford had the better season, but also has the much better offensive weapons. McCoy had Shipley and that was it. Texas had no run game and their WRs aren’t too good if you look past Shipley.

I only care because
I have no interest in Tebow winning it. Tim Tebow is the Jimmy Rollins of the CFB. He has fun stat lines which, while different than the norm, are no better than any of the traditional quarterbacks. His teams are very good but really not substantially better (or worse) than a number of other like teams. The Florida program is so incredibly strong on both sides of the ball I find it hard to give him any more credit for team performance than any other big conference team (like Oklahoma or Texas). That being said, you have to go with the player that has better numbers. Tebow’s numbers are good and different, but certainly not substantially better than Bradford or McCoy. A 20-20 season is not better than having the greatest completion percentage in CFS history or for being the first team to score 60 points in 5 straight games. Those are bigger accomplishments.
That being said I went Bradford over McCoy because I find it a toss up and I’m an Aggie fan

So, winning six straight...
…SEC games by a minimum of 28 points doesn’t count for anything? To me, that’s way more impressive than 60 points scored in five straight games. Defense wins championships!
Florida Gators – 2008 BCS Champs!
(As an aside, I’m a diehard Gator fan, as my dad is an alum. I don’t think Tebow deserves the Heisman this year, but he’ll win it because Bradford and McCoy are going to split votes, while Tebow will dominate in his region. Historically, the voting is very skewed and whoever dominates in his “home” region pretty much ALWAYS wins the Heisman…)

If Defense Wins Championships...
Than that comment has no place in the discussion. Unless of course Tebow also plays linebacker. The SEC argument is as weak this year as it will ever be. The Big 12 South alone was stronger than the entire SEC. Add in Missouri and you’ve got a blowout.
The Big 12 was/is far and away the strongest conference this year.
And I’m a Gopher Alum. Big 10 = not cool right now.

I brought up the defense issue, because P.N.
brought up the 60 points in five games issue. OU will never score 60 points against the Gator defense. Argue all you want about how weak the SEC was this year, Florida dominated the league like no other team EVER has, and that was as much due to their defense as it was to Tebow or anything else…

As much as I dislike the Sooners
being a TCU fan, I can safely say we have a better D than Florida, sacked Bradford more than he’d been sacked all season, held DeMarco Murray to less than 1 YPC, and still got beat 35-10. They have so many weapons. I’m not rooting for OU, but to think they’ll get blown out like that, nah. Shouldn’t happen.
I’ll say 45-42. But it could go as a win for either. Looks like a good matchup.

Can't say it's a one-man team
But on the offensive side, Texas have less offensive weapons than they had last year (where they underachieved). McCoy led the team in rushing, which basically indicates their limited running game. Shipley and Cosby have both shown themselves to be good receivers, but most people would take OU’s receiving corps.
Okay, fine, I still have a little bias towards the Sooners. Just a little.

Yeah I go to SMU…does leading the nation in pics(when you didn’t even play the whole year) not get you anywhere in the heisman convo?? What about leading your team to an 11 loss season in the always difficult Conference USA? Those are as impressive of stats as you are likely to see…
On a serious note…give me Tebow, simply because of his awesome press conference speech after Florida’s loss to Ole Miss. He transformed that team and became a leader in every sense of the word. Florida wins the national championship, they’re legit.

everyone acts like florida is the greatest team since sliced bread. bottom line they lost to an unranked team and in my opinion should NOT be competing for a national title. That goes for other teams that lost to unranked teams such as usc too.
Also, third best team in the conference is not ranked which clearly shows the conference is weak. The third best team in the big 12 is texas tech who was very high in the standings most of the year. (i say that and tech likely chokes in the cotton bowl)
Now had ou or texas lost to an unranked team i’d say the exact same thing.

this is like saying that my HS football team was undefeated when we didnt even have a football program
OU has lost to teams in BCS games.
tech has not even made it to a bcs game
hard to compare
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I think OU is better all round.

I would say...
1-McCoy
2-Bradford
3-Harrell
4-Tebow
Colt had an incredible 77.6 % percentage; led his team in passing and rushing. He’s the man, with Bradford a close second (though his stats were inflated in blowout wins).
Re. Tebow, who has Florida played all season besides Alabama?
by 4Him on Dec 13, 2008 6:32 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Miami
@ Tennessee
LSU
@ Georgia
@ Vanderbilt
South Carolina
@ Florida State
Alabama
In those games, Tebow had 19 TD, 0 INT, 8 rushing TD

Tennessee – sucks
Georgia – overrated this year
Vandy – decent for them
South Carolina – not good
FSU – very young team
