Wow

How big is C.C. Sabathia?  This big:

The Yankees must complete the details of Sabathia’s deal, like how much he will make each season, and Sabathia — who is 6 feet 7 inches and 311 pounds — must pass a physical.

A 311 pound pitcher got a 7 year contract.

UPDATE -- It reminds me of this story on David Wells, which included this amusing item:

Lefthander David Wells couldn't last long enough to get the win against the Rangers despite taking a 9-0 lead into the third inning, prompting Torre to barbecue the plump lefthander for being overweight and, at times, careless on the mound. Wells later met with Torre and Stottlemyre to try to persuade them that he's a team player—all the while laying out his personal needs, such as being allowed to pitch deep into games and to keep the weight on in order to feel strong.

I think saying you need to keep the weight on in order to feel strong is a great excuse for not getting in shape.

Holy crap.

That’s the largest I’ve heard. He’s listed on Yahoo! Sports at 290, and he’s listed at Baseball Reference at 250 (heh).

Sabathia

This contract is going to blow up in the Yankees’ face. They gave all this money to a guy who was horrible at the beginning of last season with the Indians, settles down to solid-if-unspectacular, gets traded to Milwaukee who put a zillion innings on his arm, gets lit up in the playoffs and is now headed for the cauldron of New York City at over 3 bills. Not good.

Especially

if he’s one of those guys that uses food for comfort.

by Taylor on Dec 12, 2008 2:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He was horrible for about 6 games. . .

. . . and that makes this a bad contract?! Small sample size much?

His tRA+ was 127 in Cleveland last year, which is exactly what someone Josh Beckett put up in ’04, ’05 and ’08. And that was only part of the season, where a few bad starts had more weight than they would in an entire year. He put up 141 his last full year in the AL, which is not far behind what he put up in his short season with Milwaukee.

People are putting way too much weight on that handful of games, I guess so that they can hate on the Yankees or because they want to tear down a player who is actually really good or whatever, I honestly don’t know why. It’s a small sample, giving it more weight than the rest of his season or career makes no sense whatsoever.

Furthermore, in this deal, to be worth it, he’d have to be worth about 4 1/2 to 5 wins above replacement, I’d believe, next year and fewer every season to be earning his paycheck. You don’t think that’s reasonable for 28 year old CC Sabathia?

The wear on his arm is a legitimate question, but leaping to the idea that this is guaranteed to blow up in the Yankees’ face like a forgone conclusion is just wishful thinking and not intelligent analysis.

I don't think his weight

is a problem for next year, I think the concern is that it is a 7 year contract. Would you really be surprised if the tail end of that contract is paying a guy to eat twinkies after he is out of baseball?

Nolan Ryan is the Greatest Pitcher ever, because Google says so.

by DJCahill on Dec 12, 2008 2:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope. I wouldn't be at all

But at the current rate of inflation, what would he have to be putting up to be worth his money then? About 2.5-3 wins above replacement?

At 34, do you think two and a half wins above replacement is that much of a stretch for CC?

(Note: this is an estimate that may be off, I’m no math expert.)

Sabathia

I’ll be shocked if he’s healthy for half that contract.

but the yankees can afford costly mistakes in contract signings

that if he reaches over 400 pounds the contract is void?

I wouldn’t mind having a fat ass like that on the Rangers that can pitch like that.

We just get the fat asses who can’t pitch.

The internet has a memory

all you posters saying that you wanted the Rangers to shell out the big bucks for CC… we know who you are. When he weighs more than our whole outfield combined in 3 years and can’t throw more than 4 innings a game, you’ll be sorry….

Jamey just sent this out

Florida is willing to trade Ryan Tucker for Max Ram do you do it? I think I would.

Miami bound...

by boomer1 on Dec 12, 2008 3:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

hoping someone can fill in some details on Tucker

but I don’t think so. Tucker’s numbers don’t look all that impressive and, of course, I’m a pretty big believer in Max.

His minor league numbers look good though.

Looks like he is a power arm

that will end up at the back of the bullpen. Great Fastball and change, but no 3rd pitch.

I like the idea that Texas and Florida are having talks, but I am not sold on him as the premier prospect in this deal.

by laxtonto on Dec 12, 2008 3:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

I’m just going off what numbers I’m looking at.

bullpen arm

At first glance, that was my impression as well, and I wouldn’t trade a middle of the order masher for a late inning reliever personally.

but i dont think his minor league rate numbers are really all that impressive.

agreed

just based on looking at the numbers he’s not all that exciting to me.

no need to go buy one or trade for one. We have one…

Keep either one of Tea and Salty, and let Max C/DH/1B where/when he can…

Risky, though

CC has weight issues (probably an understatement) and Burnett has pitched more than 170 innings only twice in the last six years.
