2009 MLB Odds
preliminary odds for the 2009 season have been posted. over/unders and other detailed odds usually do not appear until the spring, but here are odds on AL pennant, NL pennant and world series:
http://www.vegasinsider.com/mlb/odds/futures/
texas is 35/1 (AL) and 75/1 (WS). both seem a little low.
of interest to me - the teams that odds makers place below the rangers:
BAL/SEA/KAN (AL)
SEA/BAL/CIN/SD/WAS/KAN/PIT (WS)

Ya this team sucks so freakin bad,
Sorry everyone usually Im not such a downer but this team needed to make its pitching number one priority this year and so far nothing. In no way should we assume that Hurley, Harrison, and feldman are gonna make a bigger impact than a guy like sheets on a 2 yr deal, or a Johnson on a 1 yr deal. To me this F.O. fucked up again by not fielding a pitching staff that can compete.
Having guys like the trio I mentioned above is great dont get me wrong. I hope at least one of those guys makes a nice impact and sticks for another 3-5 years at least because the true cream of the crop pitchers in our system are at least a half yr away and probably more than a year away from making a huge impact.
So what do we do until then? We sign at least a solid vet like one of Sheets and Johnson. It really shouldn’t have to be this difficult. It shouldn’t have to be this difficult on the fans, players, and the coaches on this team. We have never had pitching that actually can compete. Take the Yanks for example. We don’t have the sort of money they throw around, but hear me out. Their pitching sucked last year, bad. What did they do? THey fixed it. It was priority number freakin one. AND NO ONE SHOULD DISAGREE WITH ME, For once this organization needs to fucking realize that it needs to do something about its major league pitching staff. And signing a guy like J.J. or someone of his caliber does not help.

i'm sorry
where did sheets and johnson sign?
oh they haven’t yet?
so you’re saying you need to STFU?
good.
Mandatory reading before suggesting a trade
What?!
How the fuck does this team suck so freakin’ bad? Expecting the World Series is almost as ludicrous as that statement.
This team will probably be approximately mediocre next year if they do absolutely nothing. That’s not sucking so bad.
And if you thought 2009 was the target and they should sell out shooting for this year, I’m sorry, you haven’t been paying attention.
Never said 09 was a target year,
the pitching makes me mad and I expressed it in this thread, thats all.
The bloggerformelyknownasBigBaddBubbaJ
35 to 1?
So you’re saying there’s a chance!
Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In reference to how good the Steelers have been in their history: "No one is even close to them."- Steal Home
So what are the good bets on that list?
Tampa at 11-1 to win the World Series seems like the best bet
The Marlins (20-1) and Braves (20-1) to win the NL seem like solid bets. Dodgers (5-1) or Diamondbacks (13-2) for the NL isn’t that bad either, since the NL West is crazy week and particularly the dbacks have the pitching to do well in a playoff series.
If you could lay odds on proposition sports bets then the Yankees and Cubs in particular are way overpriced – but that is because the odds are intentionally placed that way.
The NL East will be a tough division to win.

NYY overpriced, but...
i wouldn’t bet against the yankees. manager’s 2nd year. new stadium. two good FA pitchers.
NYY were 16 games over .500 last year with a lot of bad luck on their side. wang only started 15 games.
it’s hard b/c you have three of the best teams in baseball in one division, and one will not make the playoffs. if i had to guess, i would say that TB might struggle this year. they certainly won’t sneak up on anyone like they did last year.
to your point though, NYY could be really good again and sit home (again).

imo
NY is still the third best in that division. Boston is still a notch above them, and as for Tampa, i can only see them getting better with Price replacing Edwin Jackson and Bradley possibly joining the lineup.
Plus, I don’t see taht rotation lasting for the whole year: Burnett is basically an injury waiting to happen and Sabathia has alot of mileage on his arms.
In reference to how good the Steelers have been in their history: "No one is even close to them."- Steal Home
Eh tough to argue against TB...
Full year of Price, full year of Longoria, probably a more productive Upton and Pena. I think that should balance out the luck that was on their side last year. I think their biggest challenge is to repeat the performance of that bullpen. That to me will be the reason if they don’t make the playoffs.
I honestly think if anything Boston could be the odd team out. The Yanks could potentially clean house this year since they seemed to be very unlucky for once and adding two guys to the rotation plus whatever else they get should be pretty ridiculous.
When you look at Boston, if they don’t get Teixeira or anything really significant, I could see more potential for a breakdown. I could see a chance of their offense slipping. I don’t see the rotation being 100 percent healthy this year either. Could be wrong on that one but that’s what my gut tells me. Luckily for them they have some depth, but any injuries could put them behind the other 2.

here's my sentiment on the AL
two of NYY/TB/BOS make the playoffs. from a betting perspective, can you really look beyond this division for the wildcard? that being said, one of these VERY good teams has no chance at october. who’s the odd team out?
LAA is a given.
only one of CLE/DET/MIN makes it, and it would be hard to pick one of these three over the other two.
with that in mind, isn’t LAA the best option for the AL pennant? you know they make the playoffs, and from there they have a 1 in 4 chance.
Because Tex is a cancer and a loser who only cares about money

Is Tex worth 20 Million / year
if not more. I, personally, say no. The guy is becoming more of a second half player. With that kind of money, I’d rather my guy be able to hit the whole season.

I think the Angels odds of winning in the post season are too terrible for them to be a good bet.
Even if they have the best odds of getting there.
Playoffs?
playoffs? PLAYOFFS? Are you kidding me? I just hope we win a game.

AL East
is going to be amazingly competitive again next year. I used to feel sorry for Tampa, now I feel sorry for Toronto. (I’ll never, ever feel sorry for Peter Angelos).

Yall should go out and put 10 grand on the Rangers.
Wise investment.

Well
It’s probably better than putting 10 grand in the stock market right now…

I found an odds sheet from Vegas last year (Thanksgiving time, I believe)
The Rays were listed as 75-1 odds to win the ALCS at the MGM Grand. There is a bet I should have made – I knew their team was young and poised for a breakout.
No you didn't...
OR you would have placed a bet.

i could be wrong, but i think both were 100-1 or more to win the world series…

addition by subtraction...
1. they aren’t the rangers. that makes them inherently better.
2. they get to play the rangers – an opportunity not afforded the rangers.
:)
in all seriousness, they can’t be better. they play NYY/TB/BOS as opposed to LAA/OAK/SEA
last year BAL 16-38 in division
last year TEX 30-27 in division
i see your point…
TEX would need to beat LAA whereas BAL would need to beat two of NYY/TB/BOS just to make the playoffs.
