Former Oakland Athletic Troy Neel arrested

Former A's outfielder Troy Neel has been arrested.

I've talked about this in the past, but for those who don't know, he owes almost $725K in child support, and had bought an island in the South Pacific on which he was living in an effort to avoid enforcement of the child support obligation.

Sometimes, justice does prevail.

A little high

$700k sounds a little high for Neel. Not sure what he made in Japan, but I don’t think he made that much in the US. Isn’t child support capped at 20% of income (and possibly less, depending on number of kids)?

by Jack Nicholson 1974 on Dec 12, 2008 4:48 PM CST reply actions

Child support

In a nutshell, Texas law provides that guideline child support for one child is 20% of “statutory net resources” (which is gross less FICA, Medicare, a certain assumed rate of federal tax withholding, and health insurance for the child) up to $7500 per month. That means that the cap is $1500 for one child. It goes up 5% per child for each additional child.

The story says that he was ordered to pay $5000 per month, and a court can opt to order support in excess of the guidelines, or a party can agree as part of a settlement to pay more than guideline.

So the $725K is likely referable to $5K per month not being paid for several years, plus interest.

Also,

They might include half the uninsured medical costs not covered by insurance, cost of medical insurance, dentists, braces, eye glasses, and cost of psychiatry. Otherwise, half of anything insurance does not cover.

Actually

I think that was a not insignificant chunk of what he owed.

Sooooo

He can afford an island but not his kids.

He should have bought my book on avoiding child support (it’s very short) entitled “How To Not Impregnate Women.” Three page book – one suggestion per page. It’s a popup book.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

If you want an island

There are many available in Vanuatu, In fact, the island in which Troy Neel invested is in receivership and may be available. Your best chance at a good deal would be to contact Troy and have him take a bone fide offer to the bank that holds the mortgage. You may want to seriously consider the history of this and any other island you see available. Erakor Island hasn’t been real good to Troy….

I don't think you really want an island

Chances are it would not live up to expectations. While Troy was “living in luxury here in paradise” he experienced fairly ordinary living conditions, lost all he had to rather unscrupulous individuals (bankers, lawyers, yet another double breasted gold digger, etc….) and saw his own government heap a pile of crap on him.

Be careful what you ask for…you just might get it.

Question for Adam

I have a niece whose deadbeat hubby fled to Sweden to avoid paying child support. Does she have any recourse in this matter? Is it going to hinge on whether he ever sets foot in the U.S. again?

A few facts about Troy Neel

For those that don’t know Troy….

He was married to his ex-wife three times and thus had three divorces (I guess it takes three stikes to be truly out). After his first divorce he paid her an absolute fortune. About $1 million cash, the mansion in Texas, various cars etc… the second divorce was barely final before the third marriage so there was no settlement involved. After the third divorce he didn’t have much he could give her. His career was pretty much over (it was very short in the first place). He agreed to pay $5,000 a month in child support and took his remaining funds and invested in a resort on Erakor Island in Vanuatu. Over the next few years the bank ended up owning the resort and Troy was left with nothing. Apparently, during the time his business was failing, he paid many thousands of dollars to the State of Texas in an effort to cover his child support. Unfortunately none of these funds went to his ex-wife or his children. The State of Texas kept the money for interest and/or unpaid medical bills. His ex-wife didn’t even know he was trying to make payments to her. During this entire time he was in contact with the Texas Attorney General and was trying to keep the lines of communication open so everyone involved would be aware of the situation.

REAL FACTS

Mother Hubbard has got a lot of VERY wrong info! Troy was married to his first wife in 1987 and was married for several years and had their first child, before she caught him in bed with a groupie while he was in spring training. She divorced him, when she found out he had had several affairs. Since he was still in the minor leagues, he had absolutely nothing and his wife was working to pay thier rent. So she got nothing. They were remarried when he aggreed to get help. They were very happy and he seemed to be doing well, playing for the A’s. They had thier second child, and during the strike, he went to Japan to play. While there he met a stripper and began a three year affair (guess once a louse, always a louse!) .When his wife found this out, she left him and took the children back to Texas. When Troy was ordered to pay child support, he fled the country and soon married the stripper and bought an island, so he could not be bought back to the states. There was never a third marriage. There was never a mansion OR various cars. Her parents supported she and the children until she was able to go back to school and get a very good job. Troy never contacted his children or tried to help in any way. Not only did he not help, he was mean enough to cancel the children’s medical insurance (which he was orded to pay, and was coming from baseball, and not out of his pocket). Both of his children had preexisting conditions which made it very expensive to insure. His wife went on to have a great career and is top in her company. Her children have turned out to be the sweetest, most caring children you could ever meet. They have recieved many awards and much praise from teachers. They have a great step dad and a happy family. Troy lost out on what could have been a wonderful family, and for what? Now he sits in a jail cell, his children care nothing about him and he has noone. Isn’t it strange how one always ends up paying for the bad we do?? When we make bad choices in life, there are always consequences. Sorry, Mother Hubbard, now you know the rest of the story!
