Maybe

Not necessarily.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 14, 2008 3:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not 3rd-5th, but second

Nick Hagadone went one pick after Hunter. Jordan Zimmerman, Josh Fields, Mike Stanton and Freddie Freeman (all, aside from Fields, probably top 50 or so prospects in baseball now) went in that range of 55-79 between Hunter and West. Why not take someone who had more upside and gamble that you get the polished guy who BA had ranked the 121st best prospect in the draft, 24 picks later (and still over 40 spots higher than where he was ranked)?

By the way, looking back at their top 200, Ocampo was only two spots behind Hunter. His scouting report:

Scouting Report: O’Campo is part of Cal State Fullerton’s recruiting class, and like infielder Christian Colon, he could slip through to the Titans if his expectations and the draft reality don’t match up. O’Campo’s resume was impressive entering the spring, with the Aflac Classic and Area Code Games among his appearances. He has a quick arm and projectable 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, and his velocity is as good or better than any prep pitcher in Southern California. He has touched 94 mph in the past and regularly pitches in the 88-91 mph range. He throws both a slider and a curveball, and scouts like the slider a bit better at present, as he’s shown a feel for throwing it for strikes or burying it out of the zone. O’Campo’s mechanics don’t engender confidence, either that he’ll throw consistent strikes with his fastball or add velocity despite his frame. He has a head snap that caused him to struggle to find a consistent release point. If his delivery can’t be smoothed out, O’Campo might end up as a set-up man down the line.

Its the draft

Teams will risk taking guys too early rather than see them slip and not get them at all.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Dec 15, 2008 12:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously

but there were better risks out there, if that’s how you want to look at it. If we’re going to get back to the “you can’t question anything they did because they liked who they liked and they knew more than you” then it’s really not even worth discussing, I don’t think. Let’s just make that an assumed chirp from Newberg-ites and carry on.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 15, 2008 2:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Question away

I just wouldn’t expect the Rangers to have gambled with that pick like you are suggesting and then take the gamble that Hunter would be around later.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Dec 15, 2008 4:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You could literally say that about any player they picked

or have ever picked. Hunter was ranked 121 by BA. Obviously other teams could have ranked him much more highly on their boards, but again, if you can say that about someone BA had ranked 121st who was picked 54th, I would think that it could be said about any pick, that they just liked him and wouldn’t have wanted to risk another 26 spots.

At any rate, it’s no big deal, wasn’t a bad pick. Adam just pointed out that there were a lot of questions on the pick at the time, and I said that though I am relieved to have changed my take on the intention of the pick, I still think that there was too much talent on the board to settle for him at that point. It’s no disaster or anything.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 15, 2008 5:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Understandable

You are probably one of the exceptions to this since you know what you are talking about. I just think overall, complaining about a pick past the first round (not supplemental first, actual first) is pointless.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I think

it’s primarily only worth the time when it’s blatant like the Meyer pick and to a degree the Mayberry pick, and it definitely helps if you had the same opinion at the time of the pick and can point to one guy, like a lot of us did that Meyer pick.

But I really don’t think that I was complaining anyway, just not backing off of the opinion that I would have gone with someone else there. It was a solid pick, and the important thing is that I think I was wrong in feeling like it seemed like a bargain pick.

How about a lsb GDT photobucket account that we give the pass for to some of the regular GDT posters so that its not on anyones personal account and thus multiple people can add pics to without letting people have the password to someones “real” account.

Then organized into general ranger pictures, gameday pics, etc.

and ok before I hit post I just went ahead and made it and a matching gmail account… send an email to lonestarballgdt@gmail.com if you want the pass and to transfer some pics over?

My photobucket account is indeed a treasure trove of random stuff

I like to collect stuff, mainly GIF’s and motivational posters. I have so much stuff it’s hopelessly disorganized (and further discombobulated by repeated attempts to organize and catalog it somehow). Not all of it necessarily pertains to the GDT’s, either (like the Roxbury collection).

The show probably only has one season left.

If Medellin was a hit, this past season would have started just like any of the other seasons.

The storylines are becoming more weak.

i think medellin flopping was fine

but the entire season until the final 10 minutes being almost constantly bad things happening… little much. i still enjoyed it though.

the preceding post was a great success.

Drama

The episode he hired turtle as his assistant was pretty damned funny

Maybe somebody (like Rodney) can save them to another place for archival purposes. I don’t think they will be posted on these sites forever.

I already have those on my PC ;)

I think I moved quickly to grab that after the Grieve/Sexton rant was taken down so soon.

Shep, you are a beast

And there’s no other way to phrase it.

Awesome work.

Nice call.

oh fuck the 1,000 comment

I’m about sick of JD and his trades. I blame the Texas Rangers on my drinking problem. I’ve been a full season ticket holder for so long and have forked over thousands of dollars to this team. I’m to the point of just plain giving up. I’m fed up and tired of wastisting my money. I don’t see the Rangers putting on a top product in the field for what I’m paying. I’m sick of it and I do need another drink

I'm serious....

and I mean it this time. I keep saying year after year that I should not fork over the money for full season tickets. Yet I always give in. I’m holdiing ground about renewing my season tickets come 2009. I’m just so disgusted with this team

you know

it’s all fun and hype when it comes to basbeball. And I’ve followed Texas Rangers baseball
for a long time.

it’s about winning and I’m tired of supporting a losing team. I’ve come to the point to where I really don’t give a shit anymore.

Ahh, CY traded the Padres

That was the event that caused me to finally sign up here the next day.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
