Rangers Spring Training Trip Questions
I am hoping to make my first trip to Surprise this year for some spring training action. I have to go the week of March 16-20. I am a teacher and that is Spring Break for me and I know most all schools. Here are a few questions I need help with?
1. About how much is it going to cost?
2. I am planning on flying, but has anyone drove it from D/FW area? How bad is it?
3. What is there for the wife to do?
4. Where do you suggest staying?
5. Any other info you think would help someone going for the first time?
Thanks for any help!!

I, too, am going to Surprise.
Heading out there the last weekend in March, hoping to catch five games in four days. I, too, would thoroughly appreciate any advice from Surprise veterans.

I have driven Dallas to Phoenix.
And it’s about 14 hours…it’s terrible.

I went school at ASU in Tempe
I can give you alot of tips.
1. Avoid Bell Road like it’s the plague.
2. How much baseball you really want to see will dictate where you stay and that sort of thing. If you don’t really need to hit up the minor league fields in the morning, you might enjoy staying somewhere other than Surprise/Peoria and you can catch the Rangers at a road game — like vs. the Angels in Tempe, Giants in Scottsdale, Cubs in Mesa, or Brewers in Maryvale (pack heat when you go there.)
I can give lots of bar/restuarant recommendations for the Scottsdale/Tempe/Downtown Phoenix area.
I’ve driven back and forth from DFW probably 15 times or so in the last 8 years. It’s just over 1,000 miles from Arlington to Phoenix, but it’s not THAT bad. It will take about 14 hours which you can do in one day if you want.
Since you are taking the wife, I’d suggest staying in Scottsdale (wide range of hotels depending on how much you want to spend) because that’s where alot of the good food and stuff is. Don’t skimp out on the rental car — you’ll spend quite a bit of time in it.
Let me know if you have anymore specific questions

How do you like that bar in Scottsdale
with the giant ship wheel that you can spin 3 times for $5 and whatever 3 drinks you get, you have to take? Can’t remember the name for sure… Gilligan’s maybe?

Yeah Giligan's
Pretty cool place — only went there a couple of times. Our favorite bar in Scottsdale was Mickey’s Hangover — great patio.

At 22 years old
That place was awesome. One of the drinks on the wheel was called “crap”, and it consisted of whatever spill was remaining on the rubber mats where they pour drinks. they put it in a glass and you down it. guess who drew that bad boy. guess who blacked out that night…

haha
yeah I’ve seen a couple of people have to take that before.
The result wasn’t pretty.
Az as a whole is a pretty fun place to be as a 18-22 year old. Ah, the glory days….

Do people actually see mirages in the desert? Or is this urban myth?

I saw some
but I think it might have been alcohol related.

So, without the aid of alcohol, the Rangers probably think they're throwing at a "strike zone."

Climb Camelback
it’s a quick little scramble with a pretty spectacular view of the desert from the top.
And do NOT drive to Phoenix. You’ll spend two of your 5 or 6 vacation days in the car with your wife who will inevitably have to pull over to pee every hour.

The highway system around Phoenix
is a bit sparse. Stop Lights, Stop Lights and more Stop Lights. So it’s kind of hard
to avoid Bell Rd even though everyone will tell you do so.
Me and the wife made a 4 hr trip (one way) to the Grand Canyon while in the area.
Arizona is the most beautiful state I’ve encountered so far. Driving the Apache Trail
is highly recommended if you enjoy scenic beauty. It will take a full day though.
