I.m a little surprised
that he predicts that Salty is the opening day starter at C, To me its Tea
he has certainly earned it
salty would be next in line on most clubs but because of age, maturity, and talent and because he seems better at handling a staff, it would just be strange to put salty in there ahead of tea. based on last year i fear another platoon coming though
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Dec 15, 2008 12:49 PM CST up reply actions
I'm all for the platoon, with Salty starting out in such a scenario
Teagarden stays fresh and healthy, and Salty gets to put his skills on display for other potential trade targets. If he proves he’s more valuable to this team staying rather than being traded, and Teagarden plays well, too, then I’d start being “worried” about the platoon. Even then, however, I’d be pretty f-ing excited about the two catchers we can roll out there…

Salty
doesnt need to be catching against LHP, he’s been really bad against LHP, i wouldnt mind a platoon with him catching against RHP, but then again, i wanna see TT catch more than 30 games next year. We’ll see how it works out, but in my opinon, Salty is gonna be a good hitting catcher and we should give him a big opportunity to prove that next year. If you wanna see TT as the starting catcher of the future, i still think salty can become an even more valueable asset to trade if he ups his production to the level he’s capable of, who knows we could see TT catching all the games post trade deadline.
The explanation is dumb.
How would the Rangers feel about a trade to the Braves involving Padilla, Marlon Byrd, Eric Hurley, Julio Borbon for Jeff Francouer, Charlie Morton and Jordan Schafer?
— Victor P., Austin, Texas
You just traded two pitchers and two outfielders for one pitcher and two outfielders.
———————————
Not looking at what players were traded, and the merit of the trade, who cares what positions you traded? If I could trade Hurley and Poveda (just for arguments sake, would never happen) for Peavy, you’d do it. But under TR’s math, since you are trading two pitchers for one, it is a bad deal.
well we got 2 pitchers and only gave up 1 in the c. young deal
victory.
the preceding post was a great success.
i think he just dismissed it
with that explanation so he wouldnt have to go find out who those braves’ prospects are
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Dec 15, 2008 1:20 PM CST up reply actions
He knows
Who the Braves players are. Correct call on “he dismissed it” though.

well
that was a half-joking sentiment but judging from his response on the atkins trade proposal i dont think its out of the realm of possibility that TR’s grasp on the values of various prospects is less than stellar. i realize he writes for a more general baseball audience and that demands concise and often shallow answers, but his mailbags could do a better job of blending straight-up answers with more nuanced information that might actually edify his readers. there is such a thing as a good answer to a bad question, but that was not it.

TR doesnt make sense sometimes
It seems like he doesnt dedicate much time to his answers.

TR Sullivan frustrates me sometimes
with his short, dismissive answers to questions. (see the Atlanta trade proposal) I suppose he gave that answer to the Atlanta question so he could just get around a pretty wild trade suggestion. But please, at least evaluate the trade based on the quality of the players. By his logic, we shouldn’t trade Josh Rupe and Dustin Nippert for Zack Greinke because we give up two pitcher and only get back one.
Oh and why the hell does Sullivan continue to think that the only way to acquire Atkins (plus Street in this scenario) is to deal Holland or Feliz. Didn’t he say that in an earlier mailbag, too? Is he really serious? Sheesh. Frankly, I am not interested in Atkins, and I doubt the Rangers would be either. But I highly doubt he couldn’t be had for anything less than Holland or Feliz +.
Well I guess jf55510 already commented my first point already...

Heh
When you’ve seen 65,832 really stupid trade suggestion questions, it’s a public service to dismiss them with a simple kindly sentence rather than an argumentative paragraph.

dont answer that question then
but you shouldnt give half assed answers to Q’s that arent worth the time to answer. you pass over them for questions of more merit.

Giving TR a bit of credit here for actually knowing his job....
Perhaps he HAS looked a bit at the talent and is saying that it’s a swap of Two for One COMPARABLE players.
Any chance he’s smart enough to be saying that, and not that he’s being grossly simplistic ?
I never once challenged Sullivan’s intelligence. I’m not quite sure how you go that.
All I said is that he was being overly short and dismissive in his answers and I still stand by that. If he did closely analyze the trade suggestion and determine that it was an unfair swap of 2 comparable players for 1 comparable player (as you suggest), then he could at least say as much.
I mean, answering questions from fans is part of his job. I realize he must get plenty of very ridiculous proposals via email all the time, and he probably only posts a few. But when he does decide to post and comment on a trade proposal a fan sends in, I feel like he should at least give fans more insight than he sometimes does.
Oh and I totally get not wanting to embarress a fan or making a long substantive argument. But he is fully capable of giving a more thoughtful, yet still tactful answer to the trade proposals he does decide to post publically.

Boring.
The post-winter meetings offseason is dull. Something needs to happen.
Where, though?

Agree
Ive never cared much for his mailbag…it always seems to be full of fluff and i think we know more about players and baseball that he does.
That's questionable
Not spending a big chunk of the day making repetitive assertions about stuff that is still in question anyway, seems a pretty good template. Yes lots of the questions sent in are shallow and don’t take facts into consideration. But he has to work with what comes in, which is often “not much”. And like all fans outside the formal structure of the organization, we know what we know … and don’t know what we don’t know.

If you're doing a mailbag, do it right.
What’s the point of doing a mailbag each week only to tell a few fans how stupid their trade proposals are and then have maybe one or two questions answered where he simply says what the team has already said. If you look at Evan’s usual mailbags, he actually picks good questions and then answers them with actual thoughts. TR’s offers fans little to nothing and are basically a waste of time.

yeah but thats b/c EG has his free advert monkey
making sure you guys send in Q’s. not sure why he cares about EG’s Q’s and not TR’s.

interesting response in Will Carroll's BP chat
Erik (The Trop): It’s up to you, who do you sign to be the Rays’ DH in 2009? Giambi/Abreu/Burrell/Dunn/Bradley? Go.
Will Carroll: I’d rank them in precisely the opposite order you did. I’d be very curious to see whether Dunn would respond to Joe Madden’s style. Speaking of Bradley, I had a long but off record conversation with Ron Washington where I came away amazingly impressed with Washington. There are people in the game (and in life) that just have “it” and Washington is one of them.

One other thing you can take away from that
Bradley ranks first, after having the off the record convo about him.

If by ""it" he means
the ability to drive BEW to insanity with some of his boneheaded moves in games, then, yes, he has “it”
There are people in the game (and in life) that just have "it" and Washington is one of them.
Apparently “it” doesn’t come across watching interviews and games managed by Wash.
I respect Carroll, so I’ll go with it, but that quote sure doesn’t remind me of anything I’ve seen out of the guy.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
It's hard for me to believe...
that there isn’t something about Washington that makes people believe that he’s a great “players coach/manager” or that he has that “it” quality. I just don’t think we are close enough to the situation to see that.
You’re right, he doesn’t come across as being very intelligent, and some of his in game decissions are frustrating. However I do believe the guy really does know baseball, and the only thing that I can think of is that he can express that much better in person.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
the it
is all about being a really good players coach. It does seem like the players respect and like ron, thats really hard to do.
Id like to see him give alot of the in game descisions to someone else though, b.c he does seem to struggle with that, but i dont wanna see him get fired
This "it" must be the human relations ability we hear so much about
Because there’s absolutely no way “it” is actual game or player management skills.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
I stay confused.
Nelson Cruz may hit cleanup. I’m all for committing to him, but cleanup? Wouldn’t Hank Blalock be a better choice?
— Jim S., Cypress, Texas
TR – “Manager Ron Washington wants a right-handed hitter between Josh Hamilton and Blalock in the middle of the order. Theoretically, that combats the opposing manager using a left-handed relief specialist against both Hamilton and Blalock.”
And I thought Cruz was going to get the first deal in the OF. Ron Washington did say Cruz was going to get the OF position.
He's trying to say...
HELP I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!
It’s HH sometimes that happens. :)
