Yep

If all this does is allow us to keep Holland or Feliz in the minors an extra month or 6 weeks rather than not only rush them but squeeze our 40 man then this is a beautiful move.

Yah, I know...

Didn’t know anyone still cared though. ;)

I’m just finding it nigh impossible to try and get back into the writing groove after tumbling out due to sheer exhaustion back in August. I also find myself suffering from a slight inferiority complex after reading BBTiA and LSB all day. I’ve tried to sit down and put together something numerous times over the past couple months, but it just hasn’t happened – that postseason review idea I had fell apart on the drawing board, and (most recently) I wasn’t even able to put together anything I thought was worth posting on the Gerald Laird trade.

Right now I’m not sure if I’m going to attempt to get things started again until the spring, when maybe I’ll put together another MLB preview (like the series of diaries I did early this year) and I’ll have some ST games and moves to report on. Of course, you never know… the writing bug could (hopefully) fund me again sometime sooner. If it does, I’ll put the link back into my signature to plug myself a bit again.

I don't really think...

anyone is “splooging” over Mathis.

It’s a minor league deal, really doesn’t hurt the Rangers. Just another back up plan in case of injuries.

I think he has a chance to contribute to the

bullpen. If this team had enough depth, he would have never been called up as a starter last yr. In fact he started off in the bullpen but someone got injured and the implosion began. He throws strikes and could fit in as a middle reliever.

by Goyogringo on Dec 15, 2008 9:38 PM CST reply actions

He was looking good in the bullpen

I’d like to see if he can carve out a role for himself there. I doubt he starts the season with the Major League bullpen, but if they remain as ineffective and injury prone as last year, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Not a bad move...

Doug Mathis is pretty limited on the talent front, so if he’s not bringing his “A” Game consistently enough he’s going to be taken out in the early innings. If he’s on, I still don’t know if he could be one of the top 100 starting pitchers in baseball. My guess is he either establishes himself as a mediocre starting pitcher by the middle of 2010 or he’s not a major league pitcher period.

If he can't make it as a starter...

Doug Mathis has, I believe, a four-pitch repertoire, with nothing that’s outstanding. His fastball hits around 90 MPH. Guys like that tend to have ERA’s that don’t often exceed league average, and I can’t imagine there’d be much gained if he’s used sparingly. If he can’t hack it as a starter, then there’s probably no reason to keep him in the bullpen.

Guys in the bullpen wind up there for a reason. Durability issues are a pretty common reason. If a guy can get a few ticks higher on his fastball by pitching 70 innings in a season compared to >150 and their secondary stuff can’t compensate for lost velocity. Left-handed specialists are another example.

There are some long guys in the bullpen, but there’s a much smaller demand for them than there is supply. Long relievers are brought in with the long-shot hope that they’ll pitch better than the starter, but with the more realistic goal of preventing the manager from having to waste the efforts of better relievers. Long relievers aren’t used that much. If one is used a lot, that means he’s a guy who couldn’t supplant a spot from a starting pitching staff that gets beaten up on a frequent basis (Note: see where Jamey Wright is pitching in 2009).

I just don’t see any reason for Mathis to stay in the Majors if he can’t bring his best stuff often enough to warrant a starting job.

throws strikes, good command. Can you name 2 pitchers who did that in the pen all season?

Then start him...

If Doug Mathis has good command and throws strikes (sounds more like one reason, or at least overlapping reasons, as you rarely hear about a guy with good command who doesn’t throw strikes), then why not have him start? The way I see it, with his limitations, Mathis needs to be on top of his game a very high percentage of the time to be a major league pitcher. If he can deliver that often, then he should be starting. If he’s incapable of delivering frequently enough, I don’t see any reason why any team would have him pitch at all.

Hurley vs Mathis

Mathis has never made it to the Rangers Top 10 list of Baseball America. He was pitching in the Rangers minor league system at ages 22-25 (which indicates he was too advanced for A ball at the time) while Hurley pitched at ages 18-22 (younger than his competition) so comparing their stats is a little unfair to Hurley. Despite the age difference, Hurley still has better H/9 (8.1) and K/9 (8.3) ratios than Mathis (9.5 H/9 and 6.8 K/9) and his ERA is only 4 points higher than Mathis (3.97 to 3.93). Hurley clearly has better stuff than Mathis. His major weakness is his tendency to serve up long balls. He would be better suited playing in San Diego instead of Arlington. Trading him to the Marlins along with a catcher would make sense as well.
