Time to move on to the vote for #30.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

The 40 Trumps All!!!
There are two kinds of men in this world: Men who make jump throws, and men who wish that they were Derek Jeter so that they could make jump throws.
Pimentel again
I’m sad this sis last one. I live for these.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
Im all
torn up, but i had it narrowed to two choices, two guys with a ton of upside. Clark Murphy and Tomas Telis to me have what could be the most upside. I obviously dont know this for sure, but it seems like either one have the ability to be plus ML level players if they develop well, while the other positional players on the list may not have that upside. Meanwhile, the pitchers are so even to me its really hard for me to distinguish which one i would have gone with, although Carlos Pimentel does stand out to me.
I ended up going with Telis after looking at his DSL stats. Its rare to see a guy strikeout less than he walks at 17 and the fact that he plays a premium defensive position (whether its SS or his new position at C) helps him alot as well. While Murphy may be a better hitter no matter what down the road, it Telis can stay at catcher and continue to get on base, he could be an above average player way down the line. Im not totally sold on my reasoning, but i still went with Telis.
my question
isnt he 5’8"?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

its hard enough for me to vote on a guy based on DSL stats…but add in that hes 5’8" and i cant even vote on projection
anyway, what is there to like for him over macumba?

Why does height matter that much for a catcher?
He’s supposedly a pretty darn good athlete. Originally signed to a pretty nice bonus as a SS (or at least it was reported he was a SS) so he should have a pretty nice athletic foundation to work with. His footwork and arm skills should theoretically be a strength back there.
Plenty of really good catchers have been short guys. If he’s really 5’8" then he’s taller than a certain former catcher of ours who I always thought was pretty good.
He’s my personal favorite of the non-big three young catchers, though they’re all pretty close at this point.

I always read/heard Pudge was 5'9
I met him once. Seemed about right, but it is hard to tell when someone is 6-8 inches shorter.
Are you saying Pudge was 5’7-8?
Nah, noob.

Yes. I stood next to him for a pic once.
He’s 5’7" or 5’8".

lol
anyway yes he can grow but damn. 5’8" is short for a MLB player
and pudge was a freak….lol

Yah, it's short for an MLB player, but it's not crazy short, especially for a C.
Russell Martin and Dioner Navarro are both listed at 5’10", though that seems mighty generous to me.
In general catching is a position where you can succeed as a short guy.
His height doesn’t bother me at all.

De Los Santos
is a very promising defensive prospect, but he is still very raw. Telis is raw as well, but I think his skill set makes him a more projectable prospect.
His arm is strong (not Macumba strong), and he is already putting in the work to be a decent receiver. His offensive skills are pretty advanced for such a young player. I was surprised at his bat control and pop.
Don’t forget that he doesn’t turn 18 years old until June of ‘09. He might only be 5’8’’ now, but that doesn’t mean that is where he will end up.
How much do you expect him to grow?
I’ve heard of late growth spurts, but I can’t imagine a 17 year old growing more than an inch or two, if that after that age.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I expect him to add 2.5 inches in height
Seriously, I’m not sure. I just don’t think we can assume he is finished with the growth process. It’s not that uncommon for men to continue growing into their early twenties.
And, who cares?
I don’t mind short catchers as long as they’re quick and can field the position. Tall catchers give me more pause. Short guys seem to be able to handle the grind of squatting and popping up hundreds of times a day every single day for years and years.
If he ends up at 5’8" or 5’9" that’s just fine by me.
I’m just as intrigued by his tool set as you are, Parksy-Warksy. I’m excited to see what he can do in ’09 in the AZRL.

last year's composite rankings
Interesting to compare this year’s list with a composite of last year’s rankings. I just noticed that he didn’t include the LSB rankings. So much for his credibility. :)

its crazy
to think what this system would look like if we werent forced to graduate Harrison and Davis.
Also, i just feel a whole lot better about the overall depth from top to bottom this year. Alot of the guys that have emerged in the lower levels really werent in the picture last year. Thats the big difference that makes us the Number 1 system in baseball.
How could I have forgotten

Pimentel
I went with him because thats what all the cool people are doing.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
we are so deep right now
The fact that either Pimentel or Clark Murphy will be outside of our top-30 is freakin wonderful. Flameout probability looks about even for these two, but while Pimentel looks to be a #3/4 starter if he makes it to the bigs, Clark Bar looks like he could be a good power hitter with a decent average if he makes it all the way. Like a Chris Davis-lite, perhaps.
Seems like a Hank to me

Also
And he turns 20 this year. So this year or next, it would be great to see him reach the scouting potential from when he was 16.

interesting that you see him as the guy with the highest ceiling outside the top 25. Good stuff.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
hey JP
how do you activate the links that you put in your sig?
http://minormoosings.blogspot.com/
As Seiler pointed out
His achilles heel would seem to be his atrocious average vs RH pitchers. I did not read any scouting reports that suggested he had this problem in 07, though he could have (can’t seem to find that stat for 07). This seems like it could be a fatal problem despite his power potential and athleticism. How do you teach a guy to learn how to hit RH at age 20? What are your thoughts about this?
http://minormoosings.blogspot.com/
2007 Stats
Minor League Splits has Santana’s 2007 if you look in the upper right-hand corner of his profile. He hit .312/.413/.559 against righties, but with a .426 BABIP. 29 Ks in 93 ABs. The BABIP is definitely not sustainable.
by Andy Seiler on Dec 20, 2008 11:51 AM CST up reply actions
This is nothing new...
…but looking at the guys getting left off of the Top 30 is mind-boggling..
Zach, Macumba, Fabio, Telis, Bleier, and West (among others) missing out is absolutely crazy.
What's the rumpus?
so Pimentel looks like he'll get it
and he drops a spot from last year
Wait 'til the year after next

Could I ask you for a very brief Beau Jones scouting report?

Sure
Lively fastball in the low-mid 90s. Excellent curve that shows plus potential (50/60), solid change. He struggles with command. Good athlete. Mechanics are a little funky.
Do you ever see him going back to the rotation?
Or is he going to just stick it out as a relief pitcher?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
He has a three-pitch arsenal
so a move back to the rotation is always an option. As a starter, his sloppy mechanics prevented him from holding velo during a game and effected command. He was much smoother out of the pen.
So a little polish on the curve
and a lowering of the WHIP, and he could be an excellent relief prospect? More than just a LOOGY?

Sure
Jones has the stuff to be considered an excellent relief prospect. He just needs to improve his command of all three pitches. Not exactly an easy task.
I will be monitoring his WHIP next season.

Have you heard anything
that suggests the Rangers might try him in the rotation again?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Why do so many people want to switch guys back to starters so often?
Theres a reason they were moved to the pen. Unless that reason was simply not enough room then they probably need to stay in the pen. And even then if they weren’t good enough to beat out on of the guys in the rotation in A ball what makes people think they would be able to beat someone out in the ML rotation. Jones flourished in the pen. Is it simply because hes a lefty and people have this vision of 5 left handed starters for the Rangers someday? I just don’t understand it. It gets to me everytime people mention CJ going back. Hes in the pen and has been good out there. Unless you have 5 guys who can pitch complete games every night you need good pitchers out there.

I hear Rupe thinks of himself as a starter….
Well with Jones
I would have liked to see the team stick with him in the rotation longer than they did. former 1st round pick, was just 21 years old last year, BA said he had the best curveball in Atlanta’s system a while back which makes him more than just a fastball guy. He disappointed quite a bit for Atlanta and of course his control has yet to look that good, but I just think its too early to give up on a promising lefty starter. He was converted into a full time relief pitcher last year. Its not like with CJ where he hasn’t started for years and Jones hasn’t flourished for that long in the bullpen to the point where you are obviously wasting time and talent by trying him in the rotation.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
