Kevin Millwood's weight problem

Millwood Ready To Go

So Kevin Millwood has come out again this offseason and said that he has lost 12 pounds and is going to be in shape again for this next season...blah,blah,blah. Hasn't he done this the past 2 or 3 seasons? Last year, he supposedly was in terrific shape after kickboxing all winter, and yet, he still spent time on the disabled list...twice

So I was thinking about it, and if Kevin Millwood keeps losing weight every offseason, that has to mean he is gaining weight during the season, right? I mean, I like Kevin, but if you just look at him in the season when he's pitching, honestly sometimes he does look like he has a little bit of a beer belly.  All I'm saying is I'm tired of hearing from our Ace how he's fit to go for the season and yet, once again, we'll see him on the DL come May or June.  What do you think about this whole situation?

I think this time his weight loss could be for real

Because of the conditioning program Nolan wants to put our pitchers on. I’m still not a huge fan of running our pitchers ragged, but if there’s one guy who’s going to benifit from Nolan’s edicts, it’s Millwood.

Assuming we don’t trade him this offseason (I’m still hoping he’ll be replaced by Sheets) I’m interested to see what an in-shape Kevin Millwood could do, considering his peripherals where actually decent last year.

millwood is in a contract year

so I think he has an extra motivation to get into shape and pitch well this upcoming season

Wait 'til the year after next

Not exactly

Milly’s contract runs through 2010 but he needs 180 IP this year or else the team can void his 2010 year. So I’m guessing he’s doing everything he can to try and stay healthy this year.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Who Cares

Per Keith Law In a recent chat when asked about NYY Kennedy adding a curveball this offseason.

" ‘player X has a new pitch / has been working out / is in the best shape of his life / wants to steal 40 bases’ story that you hear every offseason and need to learn to ignore like the white noise that they actually are."

Ditto

Every year we get these “in best shape of my life” stories. About 1 in 50 actually mean something. They’ll really pick up as spring training approaches.

Who cares

Really does it matter if the pitcher is a little portly? We aren’t talking about a guy who has to cover CF or crouch behind the plate all game. I think a portly pitcher just signed the richest contract for a pitcher in history if im not mistaken. Look at Gabe Kapler. The guy is one of the most in shape guys out there and yet he gets injured. We aren’t talking about Millwoods arm coming to camp with flab all over it and him not being able to throw the ball. We are talking about a guy in his mid 30s with a gut.

If Millwood was turning 27 years old this off-season

(instead of 34) I might buy that he could benefit from an outstanding conditioning program. Even when he pitched decently during 2006, he still wasn’t worth a flip at home.

I expect 175 mediocre IP’s from him in 2009 with an ERA embracing 5.00…basically Jeff Suppan South.

Weight and Stamina

2 different things. Millwood has clearly been out of shape since he’s been here. I have a hard time understanding why that isn’t a big deal.

nail head that was DaheelzCM

that just hit ya.

Who cares how fat he is, just be properly conditioned – that’s all. And not laboring on the mound like he was all this past season. Rarely did he have a crisp performace.

I didn't notice

Millwood being particularly overweight in 2006. A lot of pitchers are build like bowling pins with sturdy foundations and that’s my recollection of him.

I don’t know if it is because he was so terrible in 2007 that I began to notice him differently. I do recall watching him one evening in KC sweating like he’d drank a case of beer the night previous and then there was a rundown play about a month later in Minnesota where he stumbled on the carpet on a rundown play and looked like a fat, bald old man trying to play baseball.

He got away with being out of shape when he was younger,

not it’s catching up to him more, like the rest of us.

One other thing

Millwood’s IP the last 3 years:

2006: 215
2007: 172
2008: 168

I think it’s fair to say that his being out of shape contributes to this.

They interviewed Millwoods girlfriend on the ticket

During one of those segments where Corby walks around the stands in Arizona during spring training.

She said he is obsessed with Duke basketball.

Didn't Millwood go thru a divorce after 2006?

I wonder if that’s when his “give a shit” broke?

Maybe he had the same trouble

with the ex that he had in Minnesota on that rundown and would always stumble between 2nd & 3rd base?

for the record

Notice that I haven’t participated in any of these ridiculous, “lets give Millwood away just to get rid of him” threads. He is a decent SP that is worth having around, it just sucks that we don’t have anybody appreciably better.

Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.

Let's play make believe and say the Rangers sign

Sheets.

I don’t understand why there would be so much urgency for the Rangers to trade Millwood, especially with all these kids on the cusp of breaking in. Jeff Suppan wasn’t a very good pitcher for the Brew-has the past couple of years but his value came in taking the hill 65 times soaking up 380 IPs.

There is great value in being able to post every 5th day if you’re not killing your team.

look at his IP

and tell me what on earth makes you think 380IP in the next 2 seasons is remotely likely…

jayslick,

I’d settle for 175 mediocre IPs from Millwood this year and then kick him to the curb.

unless of course your fat ass and belly make your delivery less like it once was

and then you suck.

i can think of a bunch of pitchers who fit that as they grow old.

dbacks

The DBacks are looking for a 4th starter. Millwood is probably too expensive for that role.

fore

millwood can put on a charade and act like he cares, but his most important regimen involves rounds at dallas national.

if he worked on his pitching like he works on his golf swing, he could be significantly better.
