Furcal to the Dodgers?
You know how Rafael Furcal supposedly had a deal done with the Atlanta Braves?
Well, apparently not...Ken Rosenthal says Furcal is instead signing with the Dodgers, and Brave g.m. Frank Wren is fuming over Furcal and his agent reneging on the deal.

Reneging
As an attorney told me after he and his client backed out of a settlement right before a critical hearing, there’s no such thing as reneging until the pen is on the paper (sonofabitch). As the Braves said:
“When people deal with you in this manner, they lose credibility,” Braves GM Frank Wren said. “You don’t forget these things.”
Agreed.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

They (Mike) was doing a segment on BA's Rangers Top 10.
Mike was talking about how BA released a publication for each division, such as the AL West, and named the AL West teams. When he got to the Angels, Corby said something like “The Angels? Are you sure about that?”.
He later called Johan Santana “Julio Santana” later, but that’s to be expected.

i dont really mind him not knowing that much (as long as someone does), but it makes it more irritating when you hear the same people make really strong negative comments about the rangers.

Agree. I heard that abomination of a talk show host who shall remain nameless (but his initials are Greg Hill) rail the other day on the Rangers for 10 minutes and then said something to the effect of they have no hope of getting any better any time soon.
Its disgraceful that someone would have a sports talk show in Dallas and purport to know somthing about the Rangers and not know they had the best farm system in baseball. Stupid aggy
by BEW on Dec 17, 2008 8:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, it was a pretty positive segment.
Mike seemed upbeat about how good the prospects were…He did, however, make an insane point about how BA used the word “superstar” for a couple of our guys (Smoak, Beltre) while not mentioning it at all for the A’s system, making our system stand out.

Probably could if he had to
He has all of 11 games experience there in the minors (none since 2005) but he played 210 of his minor league games at shortstop, so I imagine he could learn if he had to.

Nah
I think you could do better than that for Byrd.
I’d do Murphy though, but I don’t think that makes as much sense for the Braves, since Johnson is also left-handed and also can play LF. Kelly Johnson is a nice (and versatile) little player to have, but I’d rather have Byrd.

crazy
I’d much rather have the age 27,28,29 seasons of Kelly Johnson rather than the age 31 season for Byrd. Johnson is a younger, better version of Mark DeRosa – a valuable player to have on the roster.

Johnson is strictly a LF. Who plays CF when Hammy needs to move to RF this year? If you say Boggs then that means Murphy is down in AAA which i don’t think is whats gonna happen.

I don't know about a whole lot better
But hes also been doing it from a less stressful position. Johnson put up decent numbers while playing 2B in Atlanta while Metcalf has put up decent numbers while playing 3B. I think Johnson will lose a little bit if he makes the move to 3B offensively and we don’t know what hes like defensively there.
Basically unless we are trading for a stud young 3B prospect, which Johnson is not, then why waste our time because MY is going to have to have a position come this time next year.

Would be a very good stop-gap candidate for 3rd base. That is IF we thought he could play 3rd.

What makes you think he can play 3rd
He never played more than 4 games in a single season there in the minors and moved from SS to 2B in the majors. If I was trading for a young 3B under team control for several years i would want one I knew could play 3B and had experience there. If not just put MY there if we are playing guys who’ve had little to no experience there

Why is he strictly a LF?
He hasn’t played there is ’05.
If you mean because we have Kinsler — well, ok. But in general — he’s not strictly any position.

Well thats the only OF position hes played as a MLer.
I had only looked at BR when I typed that response so he may have played elsewhere in the minors I don’t know. But if hes had TJ surgery I would guess that RF is out of the question and I haven’t heard of him being such a speedster that he could handle CF. LF is generally the default OF position for IF turned OF

Maybe he could
But I wish someone would show me something to prove that rather than just saying “put him at 3B”. That sounds alot like guys who play way too much MLB2Kwhatever and just put people wherever they want. Johnson has played 2B and LF in the majors. Thats it. In the minors he was primarily a SS and played 15 total games over a 4 year span at 3B. Im just trying to see what others see that makes them think he can just slide over to 3B and be any better than Metcalf or Duran

I think the idea is
they’re saying assuming he has the defensive ability (which none of us are certain on) then he’d have a better bat that Duran and Metcalf.
I really think you’re making too much out of this idea that isn’t going to happen anyway.

Why have I seen so many "I would trade Murphy but not Byrd" quotes on here?
I have seen this alot on here. Murphy , if he would of stayed healthy, probably finishes 2nd in ROY. He is 3 to 4 years younger than Byrd and people want to throw him away. Was it a coincidence that when Murphy went down with the injury so did the Rangers. He is one of those guys that you are not sure how he does it, but he always seem to get the job done. I think people see him as JJ Barea, yea he got the job done this time, but he can’t keep doing it.
by Ranger Capt on Dec 18, 2008 10:30 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Murphy
K’s too much and doesn’t walk enough to put up a good enough OBP to be much more than a platoon lefty. He’s kind of like an inverted Kevin Mench, really – a player who’s never really going to be anything more than decent.
Which isn’t a bad thing really, every good team has those “decent” types around to to roleplay throughout the season – but my point is Marlon Byrd’s trade value (as a guy who plays good CF defense and plus COF defense, and has OPS+’d 117 and 123 the last two seasons) is much higher than Murphy’s trade value. So when I say “I’d trade Murphy for Kelly Johnson, not Byrd” it’s not that I’m trying to say get rid of Murphy, I’m just saying I think Byrd’s trade value should get us more than Kelly Johnson.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."

I think you have overestimated the value of 1 year of Marlon Byrd
He ain’t worth 3 years of Kelly Johnson, that would be a slam dunk trade for us IMO.

by tricer on Dec 18, 2008 10:58 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Kelly Johnson doesn't really impress me all that much
His walk rate went way down this year, and his ISO dropped significantly as well. He’s okay, but I see him as a kind of borderline guy like Murphy. And I’d hope we could get back something better than that for Byrd, who seems like he could be very valuable to a contender (or would be contender) like, say the Yankees who are looking for a quality CF.

I don't think Byrd has that much value
he’s done well in Texas, and may turn out to be a decent type B free agent or maybe return something at the deadline. But overall he’s probably more valuable as a Ranger than he is in a deal (remember, the most the Cubs offered last year was Matt Murton)
Sadly, the guy has the reputation of one of those hyped-early-on outfielders who didn’t reach their potential – sort of like Jeffrey Hammonds several years ago (and to some extent Milton Bradley), and what Pie and Milledge are barreling towards right now. Even if they eventually turn out to be productive players, no one really trusts them enough to give up a big piece for them.
Murphy, on the other hand, has the opposite type of player perception. No one really thought he could be more than a 4th outfielder, so when he shows even the slightest potential to be a regular outfielder, people get very excited. His trade value is probably peaking right now.
by JBImaknee on Dec 18, 2008 11:22 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My reasons...
Byrd is a better defensive player than Murphy and can play CF. He is also a RH hitter and this lineup is LH heavy right now. He will also be a Type A FA after this year if he does what he has done the last 2 years.
Murphy imo isn’t very good. He is a little above average defensively and should platoon with a RH bat for a COF spot. I would be surprised if he could put up offensive #‘s again like he did last year as well. I don’t think he can hit LH pitching enough to be a full-time COF. He is a decent player, but probably slightly below average for a COF.
