Thursday a.m. stuff

The lack of Ranger news continues.

T.R. Sullivan has an article on Kevin Millwood, his efforts to prepare for the coming season, and the rumors of other teams being interested in him.

Sullivan also has a blog post on his 15 "most relevant" Rangers prospects.

And that's it for today.

groundhog day

i think this millwood article is from last year (with the kick boxing references omitted).

anyway, can someone please tell me with this worthless piece of crap doesn’t spend every winter preparing to be the best player he can possibly be? isn’t that his job?

by sam in so cal on Dec 18, 2008 8:11 AM CST reply actions

the ole boy isn't on the cusp of free agency every winter....

which leads one to believe that he’s only in it for himself. At least he’s honest when he says “I’ve struggled the last couple of years”. well DUHHHH

If it wasn't for the Ho ...

Millwood would easily be the most disappointing free agent pitcher signing for the Rangers in this decade. Even in his “good” season, he wasn’t all that good. He cashed in on that season he pulled out of his rear in Cleveland and then got lazy. Huge disappointment (no pun intended).

by Athos on Dec 18, 2008 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

that is all correct sir..... Millwood > Ho

he’s definately no Ho, who’d pay?

Is it just me, or is that a really bad title for TR's prospect list?

“Most Relevant prospects”. Is that TR’s cute little way of saying “prospects to watch in 2009?” Because there’s no way the likes of John Bannister and Johnny Whittleman are more “relevant” prospects right now than oh, say… Michael Main, Martin Perez, Engel Beltre, Blake Beavan and a few others I could think of.

Or does TR really think prospect “relevance” is almost soley determined by proximity to the bigs and/or organizational depth at their position?

"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."

Things like this are why we’re really going to miss Evan Grant.

Agreed.

T.R. seems as if he’s a mensch, but oy! the writing…

by Snark on Dec 18, 2008 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

Relevance

He mentions success at AA as his factor to become a relevant prospect at the top. The bottom 3 guys on his list don’t have that. And Bannister is more relevant for the 2009 big league club, because he’s now on the 40.

by Andy Seiler on Dec 18, 2008 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

Or does TR really think prospect "relevance" is almost soley determined by proximity to the bigs and/or organizational depth at their position?

What would you base relevance on?

He covers the Major League team, just to mention that.

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Dec 18, 2008 9:27 AM CST up reply actions

I'm just confused

As to whether or not this list is a “most relevant to the big league team in 2009” list or a “most relevant right now period” list. If it’s the former, then I’m agreed with most of the list, but if it’s the latter then it becomes kind of silly.

"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."

by LSJ on Dec 18, 2008 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

That's my take too, and it didn't take a lot of guessing for me...

He’s clearly talking about guys who either (a) could make the club this season (Hurley), (b) could make the club but shouldn’t (Feliz), or © could affect the club’s plans based on their performance (Whittleman)

Not trying to be snotty to anyone, but it DID seem really clear to me right from the jump. Like someone else said, he’s writing about the big club for an audience that doesn’t really folow the minors. IOW, 90% of the Ranger fanbase.

Seriously. What an awful human being.

This is why if you hit your wife even one time I think you should be castrated and then torn apart limb by limb doing that thing where they tie ropes to all four of your limbs and then have horses pull them off. Why don’t they do that thing anymore? That kind of thing never makes sense.

I think actions like that are often indicative of somebody who has a pretty serious mental imbalance. A few years back, we had a guy here in Grayson County who decided one day to slaughter his ex-wife and her new baby, and for good measure he killed his own 4-year-old son. I just don’t think a rational person can lose control so bad that they do something like that or like assaulting a woman that is pregnant with his child. There are usually some deep-seeded psychological issues at play.

Well ...

if Duchscherer can get in 30+ starts in 2009 with a similar performance to this year, he’ll certainly be a viable FA choice. His peripherals as a reliever were usually pretty good and his numbers last year really don’t appear to be wildly inconsistent with what he has done in the past. It should be interesting to see how he fares this season.

Hank

I think Hank will make a lot of money if he stays healthy this year. I can see the Yanks passing on Teix and then regretting it during the year and overcompensating by paying Blalock big bucks. Even if the Yank aren’t into him, there are other teams like the Giants that’ll pay good money and forget about his injury history. Of course if he can’t stay healthy, he’ll be lucky to get major league contract.

That's a big "IF".

Hank is a player I’ve said year after year is going to bounce back. Obviously, we’ve all been disappointed in what he has actually accomplished. I’d love to see him get his game back, but I have very little confidence that his body will hold out for a full season.

Tim Redding

I hope JD is just doing his due diligence. Aggressive? I hope not.

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies, Rangers, Mets, and Orioles have been the most aggressive suitors for free agent starter Tim Redding. Redding, 31 in February, posted a 4.95 ERA in 33 starts for the Nationals this year while earning $1MM. They decided to non-tender him.

Imagine if we had a rotation like this going into 2009:

John Danks
Edinson Volquez
Jered Weaver (we should had drafted him instead of Thomas Diamond)
Chris Young
Armando Galarraga

We should had drafted Matt Garza instead of John Mayberry Jr. as well.

Well I guess hindsight is hindsight, but all of this is worth thinking about though.

The only reason I keep bringing it up is because

it keeps happening every year. Armando Galarraga for Michael Hernandez? Hernandez was released shortly after the trade to make it even worse. Our talent evaluation has to be better than that. We just traded Wes Littleton in order to keep Willie Eyre on the 40-man roster. Littleton was out of options, but we should had held on a little longer and let him compete for a job in spring training. His ERA was deceiving last year (6.00) because he held hitters to a .701 OPS, which was 120 points better than Josh Rupe’s .821 OPS allowed.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 18, 2008 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

It's convienent

for you that you just joined here. I mean, it really is too bad that you can prove to us you saw Galarraga’s season coming — because you would’ve been about the only one in the world who did. I guarantee you Detroit never thought they’d get that kind of production out of him.

Already throwing the Littleton trade under the bus, huh? At least we’ll have you on record for this one.

How do you figure?

Danks 3.32
Volquez 3.21
Weaver 4.33
Young 3.96
Galarraga 3.73
Garza 3.70
Those are the 2008 ERAs of each pitcher. I know they would be higher in our ballpark and league, but not by too much.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 18, 2008 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

I know you are talking about 2009

But things normally don’t change drastically from one year to another. Plus, these are all young pitchers capable of improving even more in the 2009 season.

I don't know why I am actually responding to this garbage

Danks would never have learned the cutter here and been the same HR prone guy he was in the minors
We wouldn’t have hamilton if we gave up Volquez. Oh and look at his 2nd half splits last year and tell me what kind of pitcher he is
Weaver is bleh
Young is a 5+ ERA pitcher here in Arlington if he stays
And Galarraga was a fluke

The only one I won’t argue about is Garza

Weaver and Galarraga are better than any starter we currently have

It is not proven yet that Galarraga is a fluke. Also, Young’s career road ERA is only 3.83 and 4.70 at our ballpark. Are you one of those fans that think that JD can’t be wrong? I love the Rangers as much as anyone around here, but I am not blind to mistakes by the front office. I am a fan of winning and it is disappointing that mistakes after mistakes have kept us from doing just that. Don’t get the wrong idea however, I am optimistic concerning the Rangers future.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 18, 2008 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Young

Im happy to say JD has been wrong on plenty of stuff. Chris Young was not one of them. And if Galarraga isn’t a fluke then he is the luckiest guy in baseball and will have to stay that way to keep a roster spot according to his numbers. (hint: look beyond simple ERA).

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 18, 2008 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

What do you think about this?

In exactly 81 road games, Adrian Gonzalez had a .308 BA with 22 HR and 70 RBI with a .368 OBP, .578 SLG%, and a .946 OPS. Now imagine if he was playing his other half at the numbers inflated ballpark (especially for left-handed hitters) that we call home instead of the worse hitters park there is (Petco Park). What would his overall numbers look like? By doing simple math it would be at least 44 HR and 140 RBI and that’s without considering the positive effect our ballpark and working with Rudy Jaramillo would have on him. Also, he is relatively cheap and plays gold glove caliber defense as well (unlike Chris Davis) and his agent is not named Scott Boras (unlike Chris Davis). If you think that season was a fluke for Adrian Gonzalez then look at this 2007 road splits: .295 20 64 .358 .570 .928 in 82 games. Even in 2006, his road OPS was .905.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 18, 2008 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

Where did I ever say Adrian Gonzalez wasn't a mistake

That was the mistake part of that trade. I understand why we felt Gonzalez was expendable but we should have been able to put him in a separate package for a good player.

But whats the point

Our GM has made some questionable personnel decisions. Name one that hasn’t. Right now the team/organization is in the best shape its been in quite some time. We have an amazing core of ubertalented young players who figure to be here for several years. We also have what looks to be a steady stream of highly regarded talent coming through the pipeline which should keep us competitive for yars to come. Our owner has pledged to be fiscally flexible when needed and hasn’t shown otherwise yet. If you want to dwell on the past go right ahead but be prepared for people to tell you to get over it.

by bigsteve on Dec 18, 2008 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

As long as Daniels makes reasonable trades from now on

then everything is fine. Its just that I don’t want people to just pretend like those trades never happened. They will always be a part of Daniels’ evaluation as a GM. For example, this situation is similar to one where your wife tells you she has cheated on men before meeting you, would you just forget about it and not give it any thought? Things that have occurred before can happen again, right?

by Dirk Diggler on Dec 18, 2008 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

Of course

But I fail to see why out of the clear blue you decide today to bring all this stuff up? Its not like people on here have forgotten about all those things you mentioned. But we have moved on. And until it happens again there is really no need to bring it up especially out of the blue like this.

Theres the people who think people never change. So if a guy has cheated once then every time he even talks to another woman the chick thinks he is hitting on her. Or in this case every time the GM thinks about making a move people think hes gonna fuck up

Then theres the people who can see that a persons changed. Of course if the cheater cheats again then you bring the old stuff up. Or if the GM trades away a young pitcher for garbage. But until it happens you think they have learned their lesson.

I for one haven’t seen much if anything to really bitch about from JD the last 18 months or so. Even the Galarraga deal it wasn’t trading him away that upset me it was exposing him to waivers when he had options left which makes it alot easier for a team to snag him. Thats about it. I just don’t see the need to rehash the trades that happened 3 years ago when theres a greater than zero chance that had those things not happened we would be in worse shape overall than we are in now. Sure we may have a few potentially good young pitchers but would our farm system be the way it is? Would we have felt the need to trade Teixeira when we did thus potentially not having those prospects/MLers? Would we have gone out and signed a veteran FA as that “one piece we need” type move which costs us a draft pick? The past shapes the future. Right now our future is very very bright. Theres no guarantee if the past was different our future would be as bright.

It’s painful to see that Cole Hamels, Scott Kazmir, Jon Lester, Joe Saunders, Matt Cain, Jeremy Guthrie, David Bush, Josh Johnson, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Joe Blanton were all drafted after Drew Meyer in 2002. Even Brian McCann, Jonathan Broxton, Joey Votto, James Loney, Russell Martin, Curtis Granderson, Joel Zumaya, Ben Francisco, Fred Lewis, Matt Lindstrom, Jeff Clement, Dan Eveland, and Matt Capps were all available for the Rangers and Grady Fuson screwed up big time.

Surely you realize you could make similar draft comments for every single team in the mlb

its ridiculous.

The young/danks/volquez stuff is old, but at least it has some merit. There is no merit to trying to second guess draft picks unless they were obviously horrible at the time, not in retrospect. And at least respect that we have drafted well for years now.

the preceding post was a great success.

I usually think its pointless to do that for the draft, but those are just 2 first round picks that were brain dead at best.
