LSB Community Prospect Project: #15

Another vote, another guy who finished second in the previous poll emerging as the victor.

After 218 votes, Neil "NeRa" Ramirez has won the right to be called the LSB Community #14 prospect!.

The list so far:
1. LHP, Derek Holland.
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. 1b, Justin Smoak

14. RHP, Neil Ramirez

Time to move on to the vote for #15.

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

Kiker again for me.

The fact that he’s likely to be our 15th ranked prospect just boggles my tiny little mind.

So. Much. Prospect. Goodness.

Indeed

And more tough decisions yet to come after #15 – we’ve still got guys like Madrigal, Font, Diamond, Vallejo, and Hunter all still on the board, with the likes of Weiland, Ross and Tim Murphy there to make things interesting.

I’ve got some serious stat-reading to do before poll #16, because right now I have absolutely no idea who of the aforementioned group to vote for (providing Kiker goes here, which he should based on the last poll).

Yah, after Kiker it opens up quite a bit, imo.

I’d throw Lemon and Poveda into that group you just mentioned.

Lemon is self explaniatroy. (For those who don’t know, I heart Marcus Lemon.)

But Poveda gets overlooked a bit, imo. He obviously struggled a bit in Bakersfield, but that’s not necessarily a death knell for a pitching prospect. I think the fact we moved to protect him from the rule-5 even though he spent all of last year in A+ speaks volumes about what the Rangers’ scouts think of the kid.

Yeah, yet another name to think about

You know that gets me thinking about the next round of guys to be added as we work our way towards #20 here… I’m thinking maybe Pedro Strop, Fabio Castillo, Macumba De Los Santos and maybe Corey Young. I think I’d vote for at least those first three guys before I voted for Whittleman or Santana.

Count me unimpressed

with him as a closer prospect. His mediocre slider makes him a 7th or 8th inning guy IMO. Strop has 3 swing and miss pitches: Plus FB, slider and splitter; it is no contest.

How long has he been a pitcher?

Theres plenty of time for him to continue developing his stuff. True right now he probably wouldn’t be closer material but hes only been pitching for a couple years now

Knee-Jerk Extraordinaie...

Warner Madrigal was pitching in the Midwest League in 2007. In 2008, he had a rough major league debut (0.1 innings, 6 earned runs), but after that outing had a 3.28 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP the rest of the way.

Madrigal first started pitching in 2006, at the age of 22.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, huh? Didn't you just say that suicide doesn't solve anybody's problems?

by YourNameHere on Dec 2, 2008 11:51 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So heretofore hyped as a ML closer

we are all agreed that he isn’t closer material right now, right? and if he needs more time to develop then he should be in AAA next year right? or, if he makes the staff next yr, you would have to agree that he would make a fine 7th inning guy, right? nothing wrong with that is there? Not in my (realist) book…

by Goyogringo on Dec 2, 2008 2:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This year...

My guess is that Warner Madrigal is probably working something along the lines of what you’re suggesting in 2009 (i.e. appearing pretty frequently in the 7th inning).

Although it’s often hard to make very strong distinctions amongst bullpen pitchers— with the exception of left-handed specialists and closers— the label “setup pitcher” is probably most appropriate for what I’m guessing will be Madrigal’s role for at least the next season. It seems that this is the “backup” closer, in that they replace the closer when the closer goes on the DL. You tend to use setup guys much the same way you’d use your closer, but, since they’re not as good as the closer, you put them in before the closer to avoid wasting the closer’s efforts.

Although the odds are always stacked against any particular player emerging as a team’s optimal choice at closer, in my opinion, Madrigal’s chances, relative to others’, seem rather solid. He made incredible strides for a guy who’d pitched only 73 innings professionally going into 2008 (per Baseball-Reference.com, as TheBaseballCube.com has 72 innings) , none above A-Ball.

Madrigal was playing in the Angels’ system in 2003, 2004, 2005, and I’m not seeing any pitching statistics. Since he signed with the then Anaheim Angels in 2001 , if he’d pitched as an amateur, he’d be at least five years removed from the position before moved to the mound in 2006.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, huh? Didn't you just say that suicide doesn't solve anybody's problems?

I have high hopes for Poveda as well as the next guy on my list Vallejo. I think these two get overlooked by a lot of people.

by Butters on Dec 2, 2008 7:57 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Poveda

Yup, there are definitely some things to like with him. Most reports have him with a plus changeup, and as zywica pointed out yesterday, a true plus pitch can take a guy quite a ways. With that plus pitch and youth on his side, he could be one that moves up these lists quickly if things start clicking with his his fastball command and curve. Parks lists his “sensational MLB comp” as James Shields and I think that is a tantalizing thought.

In memory of Ulysses Simpson Grant Stoner. RIP Lil Stoner.

by tricer on Dec 2, 2008 8:27 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More on Poveda

Poveda’s K-rate has improved in each of the last three years and was almost 10K/9IP in 2008. He added an effective curveball during the course of the 2008 season to what was already a very good fastball/change-up combination.

Listening to his games in Bakersfield, it seemed that he was exceptionally good at inducing opponents to swing and miss. If he can get his walk rate back down to his 2006/2007 levels (~2.5BB/9IP) while continuing to strike out better than a batter per inning, he could have a whale of a season in Frisco next year.

by spurdynasty on Dec 2, 2008 10:37 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

After Kiker comes Ross

I think that Ross has been unfairly ignored by this group. Sure he hasn’t pitched much yet, but given that people were so quick to annoint Smoak the greatest hitting prospect this organization has ever seen before even seeing him, they should be willing to recognize that Ross is a pretty good arm that fell to us in the 2nd round partly for signability reasons.

by JBImaknee on Dec 2, 2008 11:08 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

HS vs College

If he was a college draftee who fell I would agree with you but a HS kid who hasn’t pitched yet in pro ball is viewed with some skepticism. Id put him in the Top 20 but not 16. Theres a couple guys that go on before him IMO.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Of this crop of mid-tier pitchers we have

Ramirez, Kiker, Ross, Font, Hunter, Poveda, Weiland, Murphy

how many teams would these guys easily be in the top 10? I look at Sickels rankings of the Cubs prospects the other day, and I could see several of these guys breaking into their top 10 (but I could be completely wrong). Those pitchers at the bottom of BA’s Angels top ten aren’t impressing me too much either.

by JBImaknee on Dec 2, 2008 11:31 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think about half of those guys

would tend to be on the back end of several teams’ top tens. I think that the same ones are certainly reasonable candidates for Texas’ 8-9-10 spots as well, but, yeah, the beauty is the depth of them.

Hunter

He looked overmatched in the Bigs, but he really shouldn’t have been pushed that far to begin with.

That being said, such a great season through 3 different leagues in the minors.

He’s going to be a workhorse in this rotation for a long time.

by venturafearsnolan on Dec 2, 2008 6:27 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

+1

3 different levels in one year is just amazing and he dominated in AAA at the age of 22.

by hiafex on Dec 2, 2008 6:51 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I tend to agree with JJP

I think he ends up in the bullpen. On a cautionary note, check out the precipitous decline in Hunter’s strikeout rate after his promotion to Frisco; it was cut in half and remained so in AAA. Once again the big club’s need took precedent over a pitcher’s development. Hunter should have stayed in AA the rest of the year to work on his secondary stuff. Hopefully, he gets to stick in AAA for the year to iron things out with his changeup.

by Goyogringo on Dec 2, 2008 8:14 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hunter to the pen

I think that is likely, but not necessarily a bad thing. He has a pretty good fastball and if he can amp it up a couple notches in short bursts (93, 94,95?), and couple that with a curve that he is apparently really comfortable with and commands really well both in and out of the strike zone, and is reported as a plus pitch (again by Parks and others) that is a really nice pairing for a late reliever.

In memory of Ulysses Simpson Grant Stoner. RIP Lil Stoner.

by tricer on Dec 2, 2008 8:33 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More thoughts on Hunter

I saw Hunter a couple of times in the minor leagues this year and he really stands out as a guy who can control a game. Depending on the situation, his fastball ranges from 90-94 and his two variations of a curve are definitely very good pitches. Someone mentioned that he is working on a 2-seamer this off-season. If he can master that pitch, then I think that Hunter definitely has a shot at being a very productive major league starter.

by spurdynasty on Dec 2, 2008 10:27 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hunter

From the brief look I had of him, his problem appeared to be FB location. He was consistently up between the waist and the ribcage.

I wouldn’t think that would be that hard to fix.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.

You know you are right...

I havent voted for many position players just because there are certain people I think are ahead of others, this my personal list in case you are interested:

1. Derek Holland
2. Michael Main
3. Justin Smoak
4. Neftali Feliz
5. Taylor Teagarden
6. Martin Perez
7. Elvis Andrus
8. Max Ramirez
9. Blake Beavan
10. Julio Borbon
11. Engel Beltre
12. Eric Hurley
13. Wilfredo Boscan
14. Neil Ramirez
15. Kasey Kiker
16. Robbie Ross
17. Joe Wieland
18. Tommy Hunter
19. Jose Vallejo
20. Font/Poveda….cant decide.

This is a list I came up with last night after researching and talking to a few buddies that are also knowledgeable about baseball, the Rangers, and the Rangers’ system. That is why there may be a few changes from how I voted. The toughest guy to place for me was Engel Beltre. I can see argument for him being as high as 9. I placed Feliz at 4 not so much as an indictment to him but more so as a testament for how good I believe the 3 guys ahead of him are. The top 3 guys could be placed in any order and I wouldnt have a problem with it. I know that I am higher than most on Beavan but I think he still has a chance to be a very good ML starter. It is tough task ranking players in this system because of how loaded it is. So there you have it, that is my “offficial” list.

especially with the backlog of options for Hickory and the lack of innings this year. But you could still see him at some point. Still will only be 18 to start this season, btw.

Until he pitches outside Rookie ball I can’t put him ahead of a guy who will be starting in AA next year at 21 years old

I voted for him at 9 or 10

but since I think I was his only vote I sorta decided it was futile to continue until some flashier names were off the board.

I'll put it another way

if you pass on every 17/18 year old in rookie ball or shortseason for every 20 year old in High A just on that basis, you’re going to have some jacked up rankings. I don’t have any problem with Kiker being ranked here, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with that as my basis.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 2, 2008 11:33 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Font

He doesn’t even have 50 innings of pro ball yet in two years. Kiker has well over 250. Font has all the potential in the world but maybe its just me until I see some kind of performance from him I can’t put him above a guy like Kiker. Im the same way with Inoa.

Random and honest: Calhoun Middle School, the Golden Triangle Mall, and the (old) Courthouse. (Fouts Field was 4th, fwiw)

Well, of course the house I grew up in was first, but I think you’re thinking of public city of Denton stuff, not personal stuff.

Good old Hickory street.

My BFF growing up lived on Oak so I spent a ton of time in that area. That was a cool part of town down there kind of in between the Square and UNT.

I heard the dozed the flying tomato and most of that stuff around there. Is that true? If so, color me sad.

I was there the night it burned. Literally one of the first 5 people to walk up.

I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.

this is

Poveda...

My opinion is heavily based on last season when Poveda was throwing harder than Kiker. After consulting Jason Cole, I believe their offspeed pitches are about equal (outside of the left/right thing). Poveda has better command and control and is still very young.

Poveda also still has a bit of projection to him, while Kiker has almost none.
