Braves deal for Javier Vazquez
Jo-Jo's name was tossed around in the Teix deal. I think I'll take the 5 we got. My guess is this proves the Braves are out on Peavy. Are the Cubs the only possibility there? Seems like Kenny Williams is stripping down the White Sox - at least to some degree. I wonder if he'd part with Danks ;)
I don't think Vazquez is the exact type of pitcher we're looking for - but that was not a terribly expensive package for the Braves to land a quality arm. I guess the problem is the younger/more controllable you get with good arms the more they'll cost.

Ah
the sabermetrically lovable Brent Lillibridge.

5:34pm: Rosenthal says an announcement could come Wednesday or Thursday. He says Lillibridge is in the deal along with a young starter, but it’s not Reyes. Additionally, highly regarded catcher Tyler Flowers might be the third prospect (which would improve the trade quite a bit for the Sox). Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein says Flowers profiles as an offense-first catcher, but there are questions about his ability to stay behind the plate.
if its jo-jo reyes, lillibridge AND flowers thats one hell of a pull.
lillibridge is a guy who was very highly thought of a couple of yrs ago
flowers is a guy who exploded this year ( but is a bad body guy IIRC) – did very well in AFL
im pretty meh on reyes…
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Great deal for the Braves if they didn't give up Flowers.
Still a pretty decent one if they did include him.
Vazquez is good.
Much better deal for the Braves then those rumors that had them giving up half their farm for the right to have Jake Peavy be good for at most a season or two and then have his right arm fall off like Troy McClure’s when he played the quarterback in the classic film Leper in the Backfield.

hard to judge
until we get some clarification on what the Braves are giving up. Vazquez has always underwhelmed me for some reason, despite solid numbers.
Also, the Cubs are now pretty much bidding against themselves for Peavy unless Towers can get the Dodgers back into it. Horrible timing there for the Fathers.

Javey is very underwhelming for me too,
but he is a dependable pitcher, which we lack.

He's underwhelming probably because of stats that don't tell you much.
The more context-dependant the worse he looks. By things like xFIP and tRA he comes out as elite.

Braves fan here
Eventhough I live in Ranger country. Just wanted to jump in on the Peavey comment and say that none of the prospects in the Vasquez deal where names rumoured to be in the Peavey deal. Reyes has been mentioned as a possible in both deals, but for all the names we heard in the Peavey deal Flowers never came up. Padres had no interest in Lillibridge and this is the first time Gilmore and Rodriguez have been involved in any kind of trade talk.
Having said all that, the Braves seem more interested now in Burnett and did remove themselves from the Peavey deal, but still have the pieces to pull off a deal with San Diego. They still have a huge need for a true #1. I really do think its more of a stretch for the Cubs to get Peavey than the Braves regardless of this latest deal. The only indication we are getting from the Cubs is Pinella saying they are set in their rotation and they aren’t going for Peavey.

One thing that worries me...
Ever notice that Kenny Williams always seems to know exactly when to get rid of a pitcher? McCarthy, Garland and Garcia all come to mind.

garland was never that good
mccarthy was pretty damn good before he was traded (look up his stats)
freddy garcia got hurt IIRC

And now
the Braves are rumored to be making a big offer to Burnett. That could be a very formidable rotation if they added him.

or it could be pretty average
i guess i didn’t realize how consistent vasquez was but burnett and vasquez just don’t seem to be quality rotation guys. at the very least, could go either way

Burnett, Vasquez,
would both be by far the best starter in the Rangers rotation if they were here. With Hudson and a couple of their younger guys they are in pretty good shape if they land Burnett. Look at Vasquez’s FIP and xFIP numbers for the last few years — and then picture him in the NL instead of the AL. He’ll be a solid #2.
