Kat O'Brien on Teixeira

Kat O'Brien has an update on the Teixeira situation, and it is pretty interesting, I think:

Boras apparently called the Yankees telling them what it would cost to land Teixeira. According to my source, that number was $22-23 million a year over eight years for a total of $180-185 million.

Hit tip to David Pinto, who linked to this.

Anyway...if that's what Boras is telling the Yanks the number is to sign Teixeira, that suggests that there has been some pushback from the Angels and Boston on the original demands, and Boras hasn't been able to drum up enough interest elsewhere to make up the difference.

And if the Yanks (or Hank Steinbrenner, anyway) thinks that Boston is going to get Teixeira for less than 8 years, $180 million, I have a hard time seeing New York just shrugging and wishing Teixeira well.  Which then allows Boras to go back to Boston and Anahaim and say, well, the Yanks are willing to go to $185-190 million, let's just make it a round $25 million per year for 8 years.

But that number is less than what I would expect Boras would be telling a team it would take to sign Teixeira.  Unless Teixeira just really wants to be a Yankee.

But surely that be the case, right?  I mean, we heard back in 2004 about how much the other Rangers players (including, presumably, Mark Teixeira) disliked Alex Rodriguez and how much better they could play once he was gone...surely Teixeira wouldn't want to go lock himself in to almost a decade of sharing an infield with ARod if that was true, would he?

I'm pretty sure

Tex would lock himself in a bathroom with ARod if it meant that much money and a chance for a ring.

I can't wait for the Yankees to overpay for Teixeira

and for Teixeira to go into another patented early season slump with the NY media there to bash him on a daily basis. A-rod must be giddy at the thought of another goat to take blame off him.

Aikman and Bradshaw?

Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.

So because Pujols is better he's not worth a ton of money?

I fail to see the logic.

And where the hell do you get 5th or 6th best? He was right about tied with Lance Berkman for the second best 1b in baseball last year and was a top 10 player in the game.

Tex is a beast and, while he won’t be a bargain, he should come pretty close to being worth every penny he gets.

Here’s a nice article on him and what he’s worth.

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 2:50 AM CST up reply actions

Well last year was a contract year for him

I’d say right at the edge of the top 5 is about right. Pujols is easily the best. Then you have Berkman who I think has been better than Tex over the past few years (including last year). I’d take Ryan Howard over him too. Then you have A-Gon and then I’d put Tex there. IMO, he’s closer to being a Youkilis or Morneau than a Berkman or Pujols unless you think he’ll be having more years like last year now that he’s got his big contract.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

This definitely

means Boras hasn’t been able to get the offers he thought he could for Teixeira. He had to call up the Yankees and say “Hey, you really do want to bid on this guy, don’t you?”

Are the Mets out of the Teixeira picture? I thought a few months ago they would be in on him.

I think

there was marginal interest earlier on but after the K-rod signing, they effectively took themselves well out of the Tex sweepstakes.

Boston, LAA, Washington, Baltimore, and the maybe the Yankees are his market.

Maybe they're content to try to make a profit

The bullpen single-handedly cost the Mets the division last year, so they went out and got K-Rod and traded for Putz. With the rest of their payroll, they probably figure they should be well-set in the division, especially since the Phillies have made a huge splash in the market by getting Raul Ibañez (with his sparkling defense) and Chan Ho Park. The Braves, meanwhile, traded for Pe… wait, that didn’t happen, but at least they signed Bur… wait, that didn’t happen. Well, at least they upgraded the infield with Furc… oh, oops.

Of course, there is

this reason for not spending more moola:

CNBC is reporting that Mets owner Fred Wilpon and partner Saul Katz, though their investment entity Sterling Stamos, could have lost as much as $300 million.

The Braves did trade for Javy Vaquez.

And they’re probably gonna spend on at least one more guy before things are all said and done.

Anyone writing off the Braves at this point does so at their own peril.

I love how the media has portrayed Teixeira

as a switch-hitting, Gold Glove defender, and a great clubhouse presence…

Seems like he was a real douche when things didn’t go his way in Texas. I hope he signs with the Nats or Orioles and suffers while the Rangers form a dynasty over the next 5 years. Actually if the dynasty part comes true, I don’t give a crap what Teixeira does.

Teixeira and Arod

almost deserve each other for how badly they poison clubhouses. No amount of combined Jeter and Posada friendliness would be able to keep that team from wanting to kill each other if they werent in contention at midseason.

has A-Rod done to poison a clubhouse?

maybe poison is too strong
So where was A-Rod? Where else but sneaking out a side exit before the media could get into the room — hardly an uncommon occurrence these days after losses like this one.

Rodriguez was as much to blame for this atrocious effort as anyone, going 0-for-4 and whiffing on a pitch way off the plate to end a first-inning threat. But unlike his teammates, he didn’t stay to answer questions.

The code in a professional locker room is simple. You don’t hang your teammates out to dry after a terrible loss like this, especially not when you’re the team’s highest-paid player batting in the middle of the lineup. You are supposed to stick with your teammates, in good times and bad.

No I didn't...

I hardly think that just because the guy doesn’t talk to the NY media after he had a bad game that he’s a bad teammate. Just because the media says he’s a bad teammate for not talking to them after a game, or all the tabloid BS with Madonna, or heaven forbid he’s not best buddies with Jeter anymore, doesn’t make him a poison in the clubhouse.

He is the

Look at his #'s...

every year the guy puts up MVP #‘s. I think he’s more than accountable for his play. I don’t think he needs to justify to the media why he has a bad game here or there, every player does, even the highest paid/best player in baseball.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I can’t see how A-Rod’s play would have a negative effect on the clubhouse.

"Held accountable for his play ..."

How does talking to a bunch of jackals from the NY press amount to being “held accountable for his play”? Frankly that sounds like a jackass reporter that wanted to rip into ARod on the record for having a bad game who was disappointed because he didn’t get the chance to show up the game’s highest paid player. Of all the words that come to mind from that quoted section, “chickenshit” seems to march straight to the front of the line.
