Rangers should sign Teixeira

Yep.

He's not getting that much money. By todays standards.

We supposedly have money to blow..

He would anchor the lineup for years and more than pay for himself by actually drawing fans to the stadium. Most Rangers fans stay away now since the team is just a collection of mercenaries on two year deals and triple AAA players the last 6 years or so.

The only complaint I can see is.."BUBBUB we got some crappy minor leaguer coming up". So? We've gone through how many all star 1B and traded them all? Tex, Pena, Hafner, etc. Wont harm us to trade some more. Chris Davis, and all the other minor league 1B, or whatever will just be traded anyway, in either case, whether we sign Tex or not.

But, that move would mean we get serious about winning. So yeah, LSB wont like it, and wont happen.

I dont really care about this fight, but....

That argument doesn’t go too far. Does that speak to OU’s ability to steal recruits from Texas or UT’s inability to recruit well in their own state. Once again, I’m from Texas and still don’t particularly care for either team, I just don’t understand that aspect of it.

Miami bound...

by boomer1 on Dec 22, 2008 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably only Aggies care but

it was built very well and meant alot to the Aggie community from 1909 to 1998. In 1999, it fell resulting in 12 students dead and 27 injured.

Lots of people want it to come back but it would be impossible legally and quite frankly ethically.

by bioaggie on Dec 22, 2008 1:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't wanna get flamed for this

but I really don’t understand how 1999 condemns the bonfire forever. Everyone that built it knew it was a risk, you don’t stack 100 foot logs together and light them on fire without the understanding that you could die. I always figured a tragedy would happen, but I really thought the bonfire was bigger than that. People die. Nobody wants to, but it happens to everyone. If I died doing something that I loved, I sure wouldn’t want everyone else to be banned from doing it for their own protection… but I guess that’s the libertarian in me.

Also, growing up a Texas fan, the bonfire was a big deal to me as well. Big tradition, at a school that is extremely traditional. My dad and I would watch it on TV every year to get US excited, I can’t imagine what it would feel like to take part in the ceremony.

The thing that condemns Bonfire is:

Basically insurance issues. A&M just settled the lawsuits from 1998 about 2 months ago. Personally, I would like it if A&M hired a professional engineering company to design a new one and have a professional construction company build it – and I think that is a lot of purists’ problem…they see it only acceptable if it is student run and student built. So, no insurance, so, no bonfire, so the lameness continues.

by FuturePants on Dec 22, 2008 2:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Insurance

makes sense.

It could be student run/built by the engineering dept…

Maybe

But hiring outside firms have their own insurance and they aren’t under the protection of the University, which I think is a big part of it.

I just think it could be professionally done by outside firms and still be a blast. It fell my sophomore year and I had been to the two prior to that one, and boy oh boy was bonfire a good time. Such a shame.

Not to reopen this argument but...

There really is no objective way to support that statement. People may have voted for OU at the end of the year because OU scored alot of points against good teams while on national television, but that’s not proof that OU deserves to go ahead of UT.

One of the reasons why Texas fans are so frustrated is that they have the best evidence to determine whether OU or UT should advance: a win over OU. Everything else is just arguments and opinions. People can reasonably disagree over these opinions, but I’m not sure how anyone can definitively say that OU deserved it over UT.

by cstorm15 on Dec 22, 2008 1:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Along those same lines

Tech beat UT. Bottom line there needs to be a playoff system.

Miami bound...

by boomer1 on Dec 22, 2008 1:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure how Tech beating UT is relevant. In this situation, the decision came down to UT or OU. Now Tech has a beef for not being in that discussion, but that doesn’t impact the decision on whether it should be UT or OU. If the decision had come down to Tech or UT, then Tech would have a great argument. And a playoff system doesn’t even fix this because I’ve yet to hear of a playoff proposal that would include OU, UT, and Tech.

But when it comes down to UT or OU, there is no objective reason why OU should go ahead of UT.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m a Texas grad but I’m not bitching as loud as most. I’m of the opinion that you only have a real complaint if you went undefeated and don’t get to play in the national title game. By losing at Tech, we left our fate at the hands of ignorant voters. It sucks to get left out of the national title game by a last second touchdown, but that’s our own fault. We should have gone undefeated and not given OU a chance to sneak back in (even if they shouldn’t have gone ahead of Texas).

by cstorm15 on Dec 22, 2008 1:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

"By losing at Tech, we left our fate at the hands of ignorant voters."

Exactly.

Our fault, that’s it. And it sucks so badly to have to listen to nonsense from Texas haters that clearly did not watch us play this year. When I hear that OU deserved it more, I know the person uttering that garbage is a joke.

The true football fans out there understand how much it sucks to get burned, because the chance at a national championship is so rare that you really need to grab hold when you have the right team in place. We have that team this year. So does Bama. So does OU. And so does Florida. You could probably make an argument for USC, but I only saw them play Oregon St and they looked terrible.

It’s so rare for everything to work out like 2005 with 2 clearly dominant undefeated teams. BCS is a joke, hopefully it will end in my lifetime.

It matters because

All 3 had the same record in the South you just can’t discount TT because of the final poll. If it had been a 2 way tie between OU and UT or UT and TT or OU and TT it would have been easy. Sucks but like I have said there really needs to be a playoff system.

the pathetic part is it comes down to TCU and Arkansas

TCU plays in a weak conference and doesnt need to be that great to win 8-10 games. Arkansas plays in the SEC which is a hell of a football conference. one has a great season the other has a mediocre season.

thats what decides the national title?

The Mountain West isn't weak

It was 6-1 vs. the PAC 10, and has quite a few bowl teams, including Utah in the Sugar.

TCU had the 2nd best D in the nation behind USC. That isn’t weak. There are great teams outside the BSC conferences.

The Pac 10 was weak this year too

although I agree with your argument that the MWC is better than most think I don’t think using the record against the Pac 10 is a good one to use this year. The Pac 10 was only the Pac 10 in name only this year

by bigsteve on Dec 22, 2008 5:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I know they were bad

but Wyoming was even worse than them, at least on paper; the argument was that TCU can easily get 8-10 wins each year because of their conference schedule. That simply isn’t the case.

And I agree, the Pac 10 was down this year, but we can only play the teams on the schedule. I would argue the SEC was weak this year, aside from FLA/Bama/Ole Miss. Georgia was arguably the biggest disappointment in college ball this year, coupled with the fail that was Auburn, Tennessee and LSU. The conference really wasn’t that good outside of the top teams.

The MWC had 3 great to above average teams in Utah/TCU/BYU (although BYU did shit the bed in their bowl and was admittedly overrated), and other bowl bound up and comers in Air Force/Colorado State/New Mexico. Are they a powerhouse conference? No. But best in the non BCS? By far. I would put them above the Big East, ACC, and Pac 10 for sure, and just below the SEC this year. I repeat, THIS YEAR. I realize that you gotta beat the big boys before being considered one, so I’ll refrain from anymore praise. Just had to defend the conference.

Here's the official word from the BCS:

Standards for Future BCS Automatic Qualification

The champions of the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conferences will have annual automatic qualification for a BCS game after the regular seasons of 2008 through 2013, based on mathematical standards of performance during the 2004-2007 regular seasons.

The 2008-2011 regular seasons will be evaluated under the same standards to determine if other conferences will have annual automatic qualification for the games after the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons. The champions of no more than seven conferences will have annual automatic berths.

If the BCS continues under the same or similar format, conferences will be evaluated on their performances during the 2010-2013 regular seasons to determine which conferences will have automatic qualification for the bowls that will conclude the 2014-2017 regular seasons.

The evaluation data includes the following for each conference (1) the ranking of the highest-ranked team in the final BCS standings each year, (2) the final regular-season rankings of all conference teams in the computer rankings used by the BCS each year and (3) the number of teams in the top 25 of the final BCS standings each year.

Conference agreements with bowls will continue. The Pac-10 and Big Ten champions will host the Rose Bowl if their teams are not in the BCS national championship game. Likewise, the Southeastern Conference champion will host the Sugar Bowl, ACC champion will host the Orange Bowl and Big 12 champion will host the Fiesta Bowl.

Gerald Laird: One Man, 5 Scoops.

by Maximilian on Dec 23, 2008 1:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That sounds like

some subjective bullshit to me, as far as criteria.

BCS standings rankings are what will determine it? So the MWC teams can be withheld from BCS auto- bid if the big boys will never schedule them? Think about it. Only one of the non-power conferences will send a team to the BCS under this. This is a really half-assed way of “district re-alignment” in the political sense.

How are they going to get those consistent rankings without people scheduling them? Then you are talking about forcing people to play certain teams in order to legitimize rankings.

based on mathematical standards of performance during the 2004-2007 regular seasons.

BULLSHIT. And I’m a Texas fan. How do you compare “performance” within a single year?

I used to love college football. This system fucking sucks.

But a playoff system wouldn't fix that

Unless you had a system that allowed three teams from one conference into the playoffs.

And as for bringing up UT’s loss to Tech, the Tech game basically just gives the voters a free pass. Because Texas lost to Tech, that allows the voters to pick whoever they want. That doesn’t mean they were right. The voters clearly thought this was a two team race between OU and UT. Do you think that the voters picked OU over UT because UT lost to Tech and Tech lost to OU? No, that makes no sense. They picked OU because they played really well at the end of the season against some good teams and had a lot of exposure on national television.

And like I said, we have ourselves to blame for the voters because we put ourselves in this situation. But I also think that Texas fans have a little more reason to be pissed off than OU fans would if they were left out. I mean, if the voters would have picked UT over OU because of the head-to-head matchup, you would have been upset but you would have at least understood why they did it. Texas fans, even reasonable ones, don’t understand how OU was picked ahead of UT. It would have made more sense for us just to lose a coinflip.

by cstorm15 on Dec 22, 2008 3:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Look

It is not a perfect system. It is what it is. Maybe it was karma was it in 2004 when A&M beat UT and Mack pissed and moaned about how UT should be ahead of A&M in the polls and should play Cal in the Holiday Bowl?

All I’m saying is it was a three way tie it sucked but nothing any of us could do about it. Sure if UT had beat TT, it OU had beat UT, if TT had beat OU.

Miami bound...

by boomer1 on Dec 22, 2008 3:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Blaming the system doesn't justify the decision.

Even under the imperfect system that was in place, its hard to understand how OU was picked ahead of UT without just saying the voters were wrong. That’s what Texas fans are frustrated with.

It’s a waste of time to blame the system because the system will always be wrong. If there was a playoff system, the system would still be flawed because Tech would be left out of the playoff. To just shrug it off, make a bad decision, and then blame that bad decision on the system is wrong because it doesn’t place appropriate blame on the voters.

by cstorm15 on Dec 22, 2008 4:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever

If it is the voters fault then they should be blamed for not ranking TT above UT since they beat them head to head. Just don’t say it was because of a last second TD because TT had lead the entire game outside of 1:07 I think. Then TT turned around and laid an egg against the Sooners that is what did UT in. The voters right or wrong percieved the Sooners got stronger after the loss to UT and the Sooners proved it on the field against TT where as UT couldn’t beat TT. JMHO

We could go on all day about this so I won’t say anything else because it doesn’t matter what I say you discount it just as you do the TT game. That game right there and no other is why UT didn’t go to the Big XII CG and that is what the voters looked at as OU was killing TT and beating OSU a ranked team on the road.

Boomer

You know my stance on all this so I won’t go into it again. However while Tech did lead the vast majority of the game against Texas it should be noted that after their initial explosion in the first quarter which was largely fueled by adrenaline and spirit of playing their biggest home game ever Texas held them virtually scoreless for over 2 quarters and was able to come back and take the lead. So while yes we only led for a minute or so in the game we were much more in control of that game than that stat leads you to believe.

Same argument holds for the OU-UT game UT didn’t dominate the Sooners the whole game it was a game of halves and UT won. I’m at peace with the UT loss.

For the record, I’m not discounting the Tech game. The Tech game is the whole reason Texas is in this mess. The Tech game is the reason why OU is even tied with UT to begin with.

As for your explainations of why the voters picked OU, I’ll just say those are the same kind of reasons why I think the voters screwed up. Saying that “the Sooners got stronger after the UT loss” is just another way of saying that Texas loses out because Texas lost last. It’s a problem that the voters have had for years, and it makes little sense.

UT got screwed by the voters

Remember a few years ago when OU got screwed in Oregon by replay? Replay of all things. That killed the Sooners season. There was nothing I could do but move on. I would rather have been screwed by voters than replay. JMO I know you will say not the same thing.

Wrong

In every other conference we would have been in the CCG…period.

OU is only in the national championship game b/c they have no class…we could score 60 every game too if we wanted to leave our starters in the game w/3 minutes to play. We dont do that b/c we have something that OU never will…class

Also, nice job of being 0-5 in your last 5 BCS games…are you guys going to call ahead and forfeit to save money?

Also…tech was eliminated due to their horrendous schedule and the beatdown that you guys gave them. Therefore, the argument becomes Texas vs OU and even the ignorant folks at OU can see who should go in that matchup (well, maybe not all the folks at OU).

Furthermore, to break it down one step more…Texas lost on the last second on the road. OU lost at a neutral site by double digits. Which one of those is the “better loss”

Again, I know logic is not a strong point for OU fans but work with me and read this and try to comprehend it.

Oh, btw, SCOREBOARD

Not true buddy

and frankly, your constant UT bashing annoys the living hell out of me. Great, you went to A&M and obviously take the rivalry to heart, but you know as well as I do that neither team deserved that MORE. They both deserve equal opportunity to play it out on the field, because they both lost one game. OU did not deserve it MORE, and no OU fan with a brain will say they did… look at boomer1

I have no love for UT or OU.

But I can’t think of a time I have gotten into any real discussion about UT or OU or A&M or Tech or whatever. I pretty much hate every team in the Big XII, but hate UT and Tech more, sure. But that doesn’t mean I spend a lot of time bashing UT on this board – I think you may have the wrong person? I don’t remember discussing college football on this blog much at all. I am a very infrequent poster on www.iamthe12thman.com but even there I don’t post hardly ever.

Just looking back through my posts, the only time I have discussed UT football that I can see from my profile history is on the “OT: Heisman Trophy Poll” topic, on which I said I’d vote Bradford, and that Colt McCoy’s earlier seasons’ numbers are irrelevant. I really dunno, man. I certainly haven’t UT bashed anywhere on this thread, either.

He’s kind of a legend in these parts. I pledged Delta Tau Delta when I came to school here, and apparently he was a Texas Delt in the early 90s. He filmed Dazed and Confused while in college, can you imagine the ass that comes along with something like that? When I was still active I’d see him around the frat house once or twice a year before a football game. He’d come by, have a burger and some Shiner Bock, talk to the house mother and head over to the stadium. I’ve met him, as a result, and he seems like a really laid back, nice guy. Hard not to be when you’re uber-rich, constantly stoned, and banging some Brazilian supermodel.

I don't know that I understand your first sentence

Is it your contention that he is a humble, down to earth guy? A good actor? Or both?

Plenty of superhandsome guys are great actors and have managed to keep their respective chins from permanently resting atop their own scrotums. Look at George Clooney or Clive Owen, for example.

Have you ever seen him in an interview? Ugh. Matt Damon had a take that aptly sums up the McConaughey essence in a minute 28:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuYD2cwMbpw

Even funnier is Mac’s reaction at the end of this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNO04JU3Pk&feature=channel

Them there baby blues of yours aint smiling with the rest of your face, Matthew (and notice how he had to get in that I’m so down to earth and charitably special cuz I’m visiting the Aussie peons snippet at the end).

And in riposte to your sarcastic quotation marks ("shortcomings"), my good friend, I submit that half way through this youtube moment you get a telling snapshot of the “skills” McConaughey as an “actor” displays. What “chops.” Heh.

Nah, noob.

by Brian Thomas on Dec 24, 2008 3:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

x

I’ve seen him in an interview before and I would describe him as brash, first and foremost [Texan]. This is an interesting distinction for me. It seems that your contention is that Mac does not walk the line between cocky and confident. That’s fine and there’s no way to really arbitrate that, despite how many youtubes you link.

WIth that said, I agree that Clooney and Owen are good actors. What I don’t understand is why Mac has to fit that persona? Separate but equal doesn’t apply?

At his core, yes, he is a fun-loving, apathetic, rich asshole. To me, your criticism equates to somebody hating T.O. for being paid a lot of money, while he is a complete jackass.

Well … who’s paying to put them on the pedestal? That’s the sad conclusion that I draw from any criticism of Hollywood celebs or professional athletes. I don’t know Mac personally, but I’ve watched specials on him before and he has had a pretty easy ride, from what it looks like. I can’t really speak to his acting ability because I’ve never gone out of my way to see him in a movie. But from what it appears, America is willing to pay lots of money to see his bag on the screen. If he’s bad and they still want him, what does that tell you? I don’t spend money on this crap anyway. I’m still shocked that you so much as looked into MDB. There’s about one good movie per year, I’d say. Honestly.

You can buy any beer in Utah that you can get in Texas. If you’re talking about Bud/Coors/Miller Lite, stop. That is not beer, it’s water that’s been kissed with corn. But if you buy any real beer, any beer of consequence like from New Belgium or Brooklyn or Saint Arnolds or Anchor or North Coast, it will have the same alcohol content that it does in Texas. Water, barley, hops, yeast…. write that down. Smell your beer, it should tell you something.

It means...

the beer in Utah (the cheap stuff you claim isn’t beer) is horrible, it has only 3+% alcohol content in it. At least in Cali it’s 6+% I believe.

Plus if you want to buy any hard alcohol, wine, foreign beers etc. you have to go to a state liquor store. You can’t just go to the gas station and pick up whatever you want. It’s a good thing I don’t drink, fucking LDS church.

You have to go to a state liquor store

for all beer purchases?

Not all beer...

you can buy generic beers like Coors, Bud, etc. at grocery stores or gas stations.

Any other alcohol is only at state liquor stores though.

State run liquor stores

They have em out here in Va. Fucking suck suck suck. The worst.

25% markup on everything hard. I have to drive to maryland to get a decent price, and even then it’s a little high, cuz they know they have you by the shorthairs (NC, WV, and Penn also pull this same socialist garbage).

Huntressa and eastwood = BT and socialistass state run liquor “stores”

Nah, noob.

I find it best

to see what Adam posts so I know what to think.

Nolan Ryan is the Greatest Pitcher ever, because Google says so.

Myself as well.

If Adam ever stopped posting, I’d probably just pee myself and yell for Tom Hick to make some sort of terrible, financially crippling signing. Like, say Mark Teixeira.

I believe...

it got rec’d because of how everyone decided to ignore Sharky’s stupidity and just talk about whatever the hell they wanted to. This thread is full of all sorts of random greatness, there are maybe 5 posts about Teix in all this shit.
