No Ranger news out there this morning.

And I'm getting on I-45 to head up to the Metroplex in a couple of hours.

So, this is open line Monday...discuss what you wish in the comments below...

UPDATE -- I guess this post was a mistake, because the comments spiralled completely out of control.  I've closed comments on this thread now.

disturbing story...

apparently, this woman that was murdered in Dallas last week along with her 2 kids – a 4 year old and an 8 year old – was having an affair with Dale Hansen’s son. foul play?

it’s KINDA sports related…

That is really weird

…especially given Hansen’s editorial about his son and daughter from his annual Thank God for Kids segment.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 22, 2008 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

This lady I work with

went to high school with the murdered woman. She was freaking out about it, so I asked her “how long has it been since you’ve talked to her?” She said “20 years…” But, yeah it’s basically Christmas break around here so I can see getting worked up over something like that.

I'm actually a pretty good writer

and should have had a little more clarity in that sentence.

So Hansen’s son would take his son over to play with Geise’s (woman murdered) son and then started fooling around with her?

The only reason I could believe that Geise’s children were murdered is because they could ID the killer but three home invasions in a couple of weeks? Where was the husband during all of this?

From the Rotoworld AFL Wrap up
Justin Smoak – 1B Rangers – DOB: 12/05/86
.304/.355/.518, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 10/5 K/BB, 0 SB in 56 AB (A- Clinton)
.353/.468/.588, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 11/10 K/BB, 0 SB in 51 AB (AFL)

Even though Chris Davis was shaping up as the long-term first baseman, the Rangers couldn’t pass on Smoak when he was still sitting there at pick No. 11 in the 2008 draft. Many figured the switch-hitter out of South Carolina would go in the top five. The Rangers got him signed just before the Aug. 15 deadline, so he didn’t have much of a chance to light up Midwest League pitchers. However, he did hit .353/.468/.588 in 51 at-bats against advanced competition in the AFL. Smoak is a polished hitter from both sides of the plate, and he has the power that could make him an All-Star in his prime. He already seems to be ready for Double-A, and if he does well there, it’s possible he’ll debut before the end of 2009. A Hank Blalock trade or injury would help his chances.
Julio Borbon – OF Rangers – DOB: 02/20/86
.306/.346/.395, 2 HR, 36 RBI, 30/15 K/BB, 36 SB in 291 AB (A+ Bakerfield)
.337/.380/.459, 5 HR, 22 RBI, 32/14 K/BB, 17 SB in 255 AB (AA Frisco)
.287/.404/.425, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 20/17 K/BB, 7 SB in 87 AB (AFL)

Because he was a Scott Boras client with expectations of receiving a big contract, Borbon slipped to the Rangers with the 35th pick in the 2007 draft. As usual, the Rangers caved to Boras’ demands and gave the Tennessee product a major league deal. The results have been fairly encouraging. Borbon hit .321 and stole 53 bases in his first full year in the minors. Especially promising was that he raised his OPS 100 points after moving up to Double-A. That he walked just 29 times is problematic, especially given that he’s supposed to be a natural leadoff man, but he did show more patience in the AFL, walking 17 times on his way to a .287/.404/.425 line in 87 at-bats. Borbon is a very good center fielder with decent pop for a speedster. Ideally, he’d end up as a left-handed-hitting Coco Crisp. The Rangers plan to leave Josh Hamilton in center for now, but he’d be a bigger asset in a corner. Borbon might get a chance to displace him come July or August.

none of you know me (or my ex-fiancee), so this seems like a good place for unbiased opinions.

background: i’ve known my ex for 10+ years, we lived together for 18 months, we were engaged the last eleven months. we broke it off almost a month ago, and i moved back to texas from california.

current situation: we are friendly now, and we are talking about hanging out for a few days around new years (conjugal visit would probably be the best description). we aren’t going to get back together (from a relationship perspective). on a scale of 1 to 10 with one being horrible and 10 being great, how would you rate this idea?

What I was getting at

If the sex is good then you could possibly just view it as just sex. But if the sex is bad and you are getting back together then there will most definitely be feelings involved that you cannot overcome from her. You’ll probably have some of your own but hers will be very apparent.

If you have absolutely no intentions of getting back together with this woman I would advise you to not go through with this hang out weekend. If you are open to the possibility be advised that it could very well come to the surface as early as this coming weekend. Don’t think that you’ll just hang out for a weekend and then continue the small talk and eventually get back together. If its gonna happen (ie yall getting back together) it will happen very soon.

I'm in the same type of situation...

Except our affair was a lot shorter, and our time apart has been a few years now. But, I can tell that she’s having problems with the guy she left me for.

Bottom line, you can break this down in two ways… with emotions or without. There is one thing you know for fact…

…we aren’t going to get back together (from a relationship perspective).

The question now becomes… is this how she feels?

And if the feeling is mutual… then take it for what it is… two people who have a history, and obviously care for one another… but who can only satisfy a short-term need with no obligation.

No need to feel guilty if you both understand the boundaries you’re working in.

by oc on Dec 22, 2008 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

this is good...
And if the feeling is mutual… then take it for what it is… two people who have a history, and obviously care for one another… but who can only satisfy a short-term need with no obligation.

this is the answer i wanted to hear.

that being said, i am inclined to focus on all the 0-3 votes. i think that i am being incredibly selfish – wanting to enjoy the positive aspects of our relationship (like the sex) without having to address the negative things.

i love her, but there are enough obstacles that precluded us from growing our relationship that i know we won’t get back together.

as far as the sex, it was great (especially if i factor in the emotional component that i would be missing from banging some random girl). but no sex is worth going through the emotional ringer afterwards (or having the other person go through the emotional ringer and having to deal with that).

by sam in so cal on Dec 22, 2008 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

My advice...

Take it to a neutral site… a Starbucks or what have you. It’s a good idea to suggest a walk or something… being static in an already-awkward event will keep you anxious. A walk helps break everything up. Plus most women think it’s “cute”, though it’s pretty gay.

I don’t know your lady, but if you’re trying to decipher if she’s still emotionally connected to you, a usual sign is if she asks if you’ve been seeing anybody. Or if you ask her. Women are creatures for attention… so try to wait for her to ask it first. It will make you seem like you’ve moved on faster. And if she does, tell her you went on a date with a neighbor or co-worker a week back, but that you’ve been too wrapped up in the move to really think about it.

Getting her back to your place is a fragile method though.

by Goyogringo on Dec 22, 2008 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

actually...

we are both referring to this as a “sex bender”

i think that we both really miss this component of our relationship

unfortunately, we both know that the other person can/will fulfill this urge/desire with others at some point. that’s creating a lot of anxiety for both of us – at least now that we are talking about a “sex bender”

i think that a “sex bender” will lose a lot (all) of its appeal once we start “dating” others.

truth be told – i think that our “friendship” is extremely viable, but the biggest impediment to that friendship is jealousy/anxiety with regard to our future "activities.’ this is a mutual feeling that we talked about today.

i guess a significant question would be: does this “sex bender” make me/her more or less anxious/jealous going forward. honestly, i can’t see it helping things.

As a woman

I think this is a terrible idea. No matter how hard we try, most women can’t keep the emotions out of sex, and considering how much history you two have with each other, that will make it damn near impossible.

She may say that it will be just sex, just physical but I would bet cash money that she is trying just as hard to convince herself of this as she is you.

Do you really want to dig up all those old feelings and set back any emotional progress you have made since the breakup for a diddle or two? Because I guarantee your weekend of hot ex-sex will quickly turn into an awkward boinking or two once one or both of you realize it was a bad idea.

Talk to a lawyer

It’s not just the legal advice, but they can help you avoid and/or solve the basic difficulties that are involved in these situations. I’m fairly sure that the estate will pay for the fees (if you’re the personal representative, which it sounds like you are) and if it’s a simple estate, it shouldn’t be much. I’m an attorney but don’t do probate (so this isn’t legal advice at all) but I hear my staff give lots advice to clients in these situation and helping them out. Heck, the lawyer’s staff is as helpful (or more) than the legal advice itself. A lawyer and their staff shoudl be able to get this matter closed out faster than you could.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

So, at 20, as a stunningly beautiful young lady, she was killed in a car wreck two days before the 25th on her way home to visit family…black ice.

I know someone needed a Jazz Singer more than we did. Yeah, that sounded corny, but whatevah…

Your story is sadder

My mom should have died sooner, it was a blessing that her suffering ended. In a way, it was good that she finally died at Christmastime since all the family was together anyway. Oddly enough, I have never had a dream with my mom in her post-stroke condition, despite her spending nearly 10 years that way, needing 24-hour care. She was sick for 1/3 of my life, yet any time she’s appeared in my dreams she’s healthy and hale. Kind of nice, that. Certain songs never go by without me thinking of her.

Interesting article on Dirk Nowitzki ...

and taking a pay cut to help the Mavs sign another marquee player. Link. This kind of touches on the question I asked a few days ago on whether or not top tier talent like Teix or ARod, or Manny, or, in our case, MY, take into the negative effects hitting the home run contract might have on their team’s ability to add complimentary talent. It seems to me that, players in Dirk’s position “get it” and understand that it takes more than just them to get that ring. If a player is really committed to a certain team, when it comes time for re-signing, I think the decision is obvious.

by Athos on Dec 22, 2008 3:32 PM CST reply actions

Completely differetn circumstances

It all has to do with the salary cap. In the NBA Dirk knows he isn’t going anywhere that gives him a better chance at the title than in Dallas. His contract would prevent that. To trade him the Mavs would have to take back so many crappy players it would deplete the other team unless they gave up a more marquee name. So the best way for him to win a title is to rework his contract. If he could make the same amount of money and have a better chance of winning I think he would but he wants a title badly and realizes his best chance is here in Dallas.

by awall on Dec 22, 2008 3:49 PM CST reply actions

If Dirk wants to win a ring

he will exercise his option and take less from a club who is a favorite. If the mavs are smart they start trading guys for expiring contracts now or in 09 to land a couple of stars for a new era.

Callis is right

Brett Anderson is better than Feliz and a lot better.

However, I do question that Cahill is rated higher than Feliz. It is what it is when it comes this close to very good propects

I can see why he didn’t have Holland in the top 10.But, It’s a close call cause I’d take Holland over Moustakas. Holland is right there at the top 10, no doubt

by cowpoke on Dec 22, 2008 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

Anderson is overrated, both Feliz and Cahill have better numbers than him.

http://thebaseballcube.com/players/A/Brett-Anderson-2.shtml
http://thebaseballcube.com/players/F/Neftali-Feliz.shtml
http://thebaseballcube.com/players/C/Trevor-Cahill.shtml

Anderson’s stats do not impress me. He spent most of last season in A+ at age 20, where he was 9-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 74 innings and gave up 68 hits, 5 home runs, 18 walks, with 80 strikeouts. His career minor league ERA is 3.36 with a not so impressive 8.8 H/9, a good 0.7 HR/9, an excellent 1.9 BB/9, and great 9.7 K/9. Feliz, on the other hand, has a career 2.86 ERA with an excellent 6.4 H/9, amazing 0.2 HR/9, poor 4.0 BB/9, and incredible 11.4 K/9. Feliz is younger by three months. Now that is only the stats side of the argument, from the scouting point of view, I know Feliz has probably the best fastball in the minor leagues, and only average secondary stuff. Anderson has a more complete repertoire, but it still only leads to inferior stats to Feliz and Cahill. Cahill is 22-9 2.68 ERA 6.2 H/9 0.3 HR/9 3.7 BB/9 10.0 K/9 throughout his minor league career and is a month younger than Anderson. Please don’t say that because Anderson is left-handed and has better control that he is better than these two pitchers. If that is really the case, then why isn’t Holland on Callis’ top 10?

by coolrangersfan on Dec 22, 2008 6:52 PM CST up reply actions

Listening to MLB Home Plate

on XM this morning and they had Manuel and Callis on. I believe it was Manuel that had Feliz as the number 3 overall prospect in baseball. They didn’t go into much detail with the Rangers, but both had the system as 1 overall with the A’s and Marlins very close for 2 and 3.

Also, anyone that doesn’t vote for a guy who gets at least 95% of votes loses their voting privileges. I’m sorry, but if you didn’t vote for Hank Aaron of if you did vote for Shawon Dunston then you don’t deserve to have a vote.

Voters feeling that a player shouldn’t get in unanimously shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Also, I think its stupid how the votes change so much for players. Either the player is good enough to get into the HOF or he isn’t. How others vote shouldn’t change that nor should they all of a sudden be HOFs one day after not being considered HOFs.

Teixeira to Red Sox

From “Sons of Bill Simmons”. I have never heard of this site hence no fanpost.

8yr/$170M comes out to only be $21.25M per year. That seems a little low. Maybe it is not all about the money for Teix.

Sources have confirmed to Sons of Simmons, that the Boston Red Sox have agreed in principle to an eight-year deal with first basemen Mark Teixeira. Details are still sketchy at the moment, but it looks to be for around $170 Million dollars, not the $195 Million that agent Scott Boras was asking for. We cannot confirm, but we have heard the Red Sox did not include an opt-clause in the contract. Last season while splitting time between the Braves and Angels, Teixeira batted .308 with 33 HR’s and 121 RBI’s.
