Want to keep quality baseball reporting?
If you still want Evan Grant reporting on the Rangers for you, take a minute and fill up a couple of e-mail boxes. Might help, might not: Might as well try.

They still haven't told me what they are going to do about the blog and I'm not sure that they've made a final decision. I do know that even in September, Octobe and November, the Rangers blog was the second most active DMN blog (behind the Cowboys, of course) and that we routinely got five to six times as many hits per day as the Mavericks or Stars blogs and ten to fifty times as many as any other DMN sports blog. I also know that beat reporting on the sports teams gets far more action than the columns.
So why they want to cut back on beat reporting and keep columnists around is beyond me. Seems that bloggers have replaced traditional columnists, but as good as guys like Adam or Jamey or Joey are, they can't take the place of great beat reporters.

I agree 100%
Honestly, I could care less if DMN kept Cowlishaw, or JJ Taylor or Sherrington. I mean, are their columns a stop down for anyone in the world?
I do read beat reporting though. I don’t see a lot of reason to read DMN if they do away with beat reporting.

Agree
i get the DMN daily, but without the rangers beat reporting I’m not sure I want to subscribe daily any more. The paper is slowly going downhill with every cutback the quality gets worse.
A lot of the movie reviews they carry on friday are just feeds from other papers or the AP, there is a lot less original content than I would like from my local paper and sadly it’s the only dallas newspaper.

Why not fill up some inboxes?
Great idea MJH. To take it one step further, why not make a few posts on fav baseball blogs/sites expressing incredulity about the elimination of the beat writer for a mid-market team followed by a request to email the DMN editors about the absurdity of such a move (with a link to the Dallas Observer article).
If sci-fi geeks/bloggers can bring about a major motion picture (Serenity) after the cancellation of Firefly, maybe we can bring Evan back, who knows?. Just a suggestion.

i was thinking after this evan debacle
how absolutely f*ck%d it is that the DMN would hire MJH b/c they are getting their a$$ handed to them by bloggers in the baseball market especially, have him leave his MLB posting and his own website in the past as far as a marketing form is concerned and then cut him lose within 1/3 or so of a season. If that doesnt seem like an absolute blatant attempt to mess with competition i dunno what is.
Wild Idea #1: i really think that all the dallas area baseball beat-writers from all papers and the bloggers Jamey, MJH, and Park and Cole should just walk out of their papers and merge to form a media outlet to cover the team and sell the rights to both papers, blow their doors off, basically giving them no choice but to purchase the rights to their coverage.

I wish the papers would merge...
or whatever they plan on doing. Whatever path they decide to go down, I hope they at least re-allocate Evan Grant back to the baseball beat. If the papers are going to be successful, they can start by not misallocating resources. The last thing they need to do is assign another writer to the Cowboys.
I don’t care what they decide. Merge and put him back on baseball. Exchange some staff and send him to the Star Telegram… Whatever. His coverage is good, he seems to have been developing a rapport with some of the players and staff, which we don’t get from the blogs. And he strives to improve, starting to mix in some more modern stats. I hate to see that wasted by diverting him to Cowboys coverage.
I’m sure Evan is reading some of this, as he’s posted here on occasion. I’m also pretty sure he isn’t able to respond on here, or is hesitant to.

If the papers merged
in an effort to remain viable as daily newspapers I don’t see Grant being picked. I would pick him, of course, but the papers have many more casual fans reading than hardcore ones. In other words, the papers have more people reading Galloway for a laugh than Grant’s good beat writing.
Hardcore fans that value good beat writing over knee-jerking columnists are not in the majority.

I'm not a Cowboys fan but that team
has all the earmarks of something being wrong internally and a polarizing, mouthy, aging HOF bound WR in decline who has lots of influence in the room probably isn’t good for morale.
I can’t say that I fully agree with Galloway that Phillips should be fired (that defense shows moments of dominance) but columnists should not terminated mainly because you disagree with their opinions and that’s what happens in this market.
If Galloway gave lots of love to JD, the opinion in here (and other places) would be much different.

No, Galloway is one of the few
columnists in DFW who is not afraid to kick people (who deserve it) in the nuts. There was a very incestuous relationship between the DMN and the Texas Rangers (hello, advertising) and the coverage of the Texas Rangers by the DMN (to this day) is a reflection of that relationship.
Galloway recognized right away what a problem Sanders was and the same thing with TO. Both came to fruition.
Early on, he ripped the hell out of John Hart (which seemed to be okay in here) but he also did the same thing to JD (with more than enough cause).
He also backed Avery when he was here and said that Ron Washington should be brought back next year.
Sometimes he’s right, sometimes he’s wrong.

The problem with Galloway
is not any of his opinions. It is that none of his opinions are based on careful thought, nuance, research or any of the things that a newspaper journalist supposedly does to make their writing informed.
He makes NO EFFORT to add anything to the conversation, he just spouts something negative. He is no better than the worst poster here on this blog and does nothing to deserve his status as a columnist. Talk radio is all he should be doing. He is at the same level as Joan Rivers or Jerry Springer.

Basically, as many have said here already, the columnists have nothing to say that isn’t already said better by bloggers covering any given sport. I can’t for the life of me understand newspapers holding onto columnists as they try to figure out how to remain viable.

Mr. Leavell and Mr. Yates,
What are the chances that he is “re-allocated” to the FWST and still allowed to cover the Rangers?
I understand the goal of cutting cost but is it not underutilizing his talents and the connections he has made working as the beat writer for the Rangers by moving him to the Cowboys?
When will this shakeup become “official”?
Would the best way to deal with the challenges of the industry be to merge the DMN and the FWST in order for one to continue as a daily newspaper instead of both (eventually) going out of business?

Just as when we're criticizing Rangers decisions
we need to keep in mind that we only know a tiny portion of all the things they have to consider and the constrictions within they make these decisions.
We can sit here and say it makes much more sense for them to keep Grant, blah, blah, blah, but we really have absolutely no idea what the value is over there of any writer/format/blog/column in terms of their revenue.

All true
However I did elaborate to them on things they were spending for that are either not well received, or don’t push revenue. And clearly, I have no executive position within the DMN, don’t own stock in the holding company, don’t subscribe, and don’t read ‘em online except re the Rangers. Whatever decisions they make are in somebody’s self interest, which is again … and typically …. not news.

Sure, we can't quantify it as precisely
But from a macroeconomic perspective, it can’t be that difficult to speculate about what issues they are facing. I mean, everything I have said is pure speculation on my part. I have a friend who interned with the DMN for a couple of years and he relays certain aspects of the business to me, but that doesn’t make my opinion any more informed than the rest of yours’.
But the assertion that we cannot accurately ballpark the situation they are facing in terms of opportunity costs, is quite fallible.

All these internet people want to change
the print media. Seems a bit ironic to me. I don’t personally subscribe to the DMN, but I do read it daily from my puter. If you expect a say in the newspaper, then you should at least be paying for it. That is the problem, isn’t it? They’re not receiving enough money, so they can’t afford to keep Evan in baseball. I wish it wasn’t so. Maybe we should wish 30 consecutive losing seasons on the cowboys if we want more attention paid to the Rangers.

Galloway talked to JD quite a bit during both 2006 & 2007
(had him on his show and featured lots of quotes in his columns) but I’m not sure about last year. I do know Galloway had lots of quotes from Nolan Ryan in his columns plus had him on his show 3-4 times during the 2008 season.

Galloway wrote a few different articles
on Josh Hamilton throughout last season that were both positive and glowing.
JD gets kicked in the nuts for the same reasons that John Hart before him got kicked in the nuts.
Galloway rips JD because of his performance and nothing else. Until Nolan became his immediate superior, JD was a horrific GM.
It has nothing to do with his radio show or for this so called penchant that Galloway has for being some kind of media firestarter.
If that bothers all the sunshine-pumpers who think JD can do no wrong, good!!

just because some people think JD has done a lot of good (and yes bad) doesnt mean they are a sunshine pumper.
Galloway rips daniels because he chooses to, he also chooses to ignore the good moves he has made as well. As far as nolan making JD better, well I don’t remember Nolan ryan making the trade with atlanta?
Or the trade with boston?
He was however around for the lack of trading this year, instead of giving nolan credit for keeping boy blunder on a leash how about placing some blame for not trading away guys like milton bradley for some prospects?

Didn’t he also tell a little story on Teixeira as well?
Galloway is hardly a sportswriting hero of mine (that’s reserved for the incomparable Jim Murray), has his hits and misses with columns but he’s been very accurate on JD from the get-go.
All of us will have to give JD credit for the Tex trade if those magic beans ever do anything of note in The Show / help the Rangers become a contender. Until then, the only thing that trade has done is helped the team’s minor league rankings.

BZA, Fire the manager (which is very critical)
fix the defense, improve the starting pitching.
If you have decided that Young is not the long-term answer at SS, move him to another position this upcoming year. Same goes for Kinsler.
Find a one year replacement and then hope and pray that Andrus really is the goods.
Starting pitching – CC, Burnett or DLowe.

1. Play better

4. Get in a bidding war with the Yankees for an ace and an injury prone overrated starter or try bringing in a 36 year old pitcher to save the rotation.

This organization is acting like
the 2010 season is not going to be played.
You simply can’t plug 5 kids into your rotation and expect them to be successful no matter how good Baseball Prospectus says they are going to be.
Padilla isn’t going to be here in 2010 and I seriously doubt this team lets Millwood pitch enough to get vested for 2010 either.
We’re going to need some war-horse (maybe two of them) in 2010 to take the hill 33 times, give us 200 IPs and a 4.50 ERA and there’s not going to be anybody here to do it.
Then we’ll all sit around the campfire pining for 2011 & 2012.

But
Why do you want Derek Lowe? I certainly would not be crazy about the team making a significant offer to him. He’s old.

Lowe is a sinker ball pitcher
(which may play well in Arlington) and he has thrown 180-220 IPs in the last 7 years.
The Rangers are going to need somebody like that in 2010.

My guess is
that if AJM or Newberg chose to pick up the phone, they could get an interview with JD. Newberg has had JD out to Newberg nights, I doubt he’d refuse the call.
Nolan Ryan is the Greatest Pitcher ever, because Google says so.
