Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Tuesday a.m. stuff

Still not much news out there...I'm ready for spring training to start...

T.R. Sullivan had a mailbag column up yesterday.  He's also on the Eric Hurley bandwagon.

Gerry Fraley had a column about Nolan Ryan wanting the Ranger pitchers to work deeper in games and throw more pitches.  One thing that didn't make sense, though...

The workload will increase in spring training. If the plans hold, the Rangers could return to the four-man rotation, which has been out of favor for more than 30 years.

* * *

To do this, pitchers must be conditioned to think about going the distance.

It seems to me that, with a four man rotation, your starters are probably going to throw fewer innings per start, since they have less recovery time, and since you have an extra arm in the bullpen.  I'm not sure how a four man rotation means starting pitchers throwing deeper into games.

Mauer to Red Sox

in 2011?

As the Mark Teixeira free-agent negotiations go, so might go the market for Joe Mauer, who can become a free agent after the 2010 season. Teixeira, 28, is seeking a deal in excess of $20 million a season. Mauer, 25, the Twins’ two-time batting champion and Gold Glove catcher, next season will be the Twins’ third-highest paid player at $10.5 million. He’ll make $12.5 million in 2010. People in the know say the Boston Red Sox already are salivating over Mauer, who would be only 27 as a free agent. There have been no talks this winter about extending the St. Paul native’s contract, in part because Mauer’s value after last season is at a premium, and it’s uncertain whether the seismic downturn in the nation’s economy will affect baseball salaries a year from now. What is for sure is that the Mauer contract negotiations will be the biggest and most important in Twins history.

This is kind of like

counting on signing LeBron James multiple years down the line. For a franchise like Boston, there is a lot of important baseball to be played between now and then.

I agree

That quote is from a writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Is it just specualtion? Yes, there is a lot of baseball to be played between now and 2011. There are also other ways for Boston to fix their catching problem between now and then.

sad

Sports journalism like this piece from Fraley has killed the medium. If all sports writers were as knowledgeable and insightful as Hindman, then I might be more inclined to fill up a bunch of inboxes in their defense. But Fraley’s lazy, uninformed journalism isn’t the exception any more, but rather the rule, and that goes for most of the writers at the DMN as well. I have learned much more about the Rangers, baseball, and sports in general from independent websites and blogs than than I have from the DMN and Startlegram coverage over the past few years.

Better idea?

This may sound just as crazy as fraley’s 4 man rotation but what about a 6 man rotation? I think it makes sense for a number of reasons:
1. More recovery time for pitchers allows them to pitch deeper into games (obvious)
2. Texas heat.
3. This would be a way to work some of our young pitchers into the rotation.

What are everyone’s thoughts?

How about two teams of pitchers, team one and team two, who alternate days throughout the season.

On each team you’d have 4 “starters” who’d be asked to pitch two innings each and one “closer” who’d always get the ninth inning.

Then you’d have two “swing men” who would basically be used to fill in when one of the starters just completely didn’t have it in one of their stints, or if you got into an absolute blowout and/or wanted to to give some of the regular guys some extra rest. Plus they would help guard against the heightened probability that one of the 5 guys you use just not having it that day. (The more guys you use, the more likely it is that one of them just sucks that day.)

I know of course that this is completely unfeasible at the major league level and would never ever be put into action by any major league baseball club, ever. But I think it’s an interesting idea in theory. It’s much easier to develop good relief type pitchers. They can pitch at their max and don’t have to ever worry about ever facing a lineup twice or three times through on the same night so you don’t need to worry about developing that third pitch as much.

It’s never gonna happen, but it’d be fun if a team I didn’t root for tried to implement it.

Heh. I think it'd actually have a chance of working.

I just don’t want the team I live and die for being the team doing the clinical trials and whatnot.

They test medicine on lab rats and not people cause you don’t care if it cures their disease or not cause you don’t care if they live or die.

Let’s test my whacky new pitching idea on the Marlins or someone I don’t care about at all.

That way if it fails and the team that implements it becomes a laughing stock (which they would), I’d still be able to wear my Rangers cap in public.

Wouldn’t you at least be intrigued by the idea if you read the Pirates or somebody had decided that true “starters” were to scarce and cost too much to develop and/or bring in via FA and trades so they were gonna implement this plan in ’09?

I’d be intrigued as hell.

it can be done though

but it’s something that takes years to get use too. these pitchers need to start in the minors to get acclimated to pitching every 4th day. It’s a long process, it can be done, but not in one year, let a lone one spring training…

greatest idea ever

nolan is effectively reducing the number of bad starters on the staff by 20%.

i like it.

what if this team could reduce all its other problems by 20% in the winter?

20% fewer errors.

20% fewer strike outs.

what about 20% fewer losses?

greatness.

by sam in so cal on Dec 23, 2008 10:06 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But...

…reducing the pitching staff by 20% does not correlate to a corresponding drop in any category. In fact, my guess is that it means more problems because with fewer starting pitcher innings per game that means a heavier reliance upon the bullpen, which, when it gets overworked, is terrible. See: 2008. Additionally, it just means that the bad pitchers get into games more often, a la Jamey Wright in 2008.

I kind of like the idea of a four man rotation...

but, clearly, we would have to be talking about pitch counts in thh 80-90 range per game. I don’t see any particular reason why someone who pitched 85 pitches couldn’t come back and do the same thing again after three days of rest. Anyway, not infrequently there would be a fourth day or rest in there anyway and you wouldn’t skip the fourth starter in that situation, they would just get the extra day and of course when you knew that was coming edging pitch coun’t up to 100 would be okay too. While it would be nice to have your best four starters getting nearly all the starts, another nice thing is that you could have a group of three set up type men as Nolan referred to (say, Hurley, Feldman and Nippert) primed and ready to throw 2-3 innings (30-50 pitches) behind these guys before getting to the back of the bullpen. I think that would be a pretty effective group in that role Not sure that it can be implemented in 2009 given the questions it would raise from sportswriters the agents, and starters who would often be pitching well but pulled before they were in a position to get a win, but I don’t see any good reason why this couldn’t be very effective and not any more destructive of pitchers arms than the current plan.

A four man rotation would be a lot more useful in the NL...

as it frees up a roster spot for a bench player. If the Rangers did it, they’d just have to carry an extra reliever to keep the bullpen from getting (more) worn out.

by Wemedge on Dec 23, 2008 10:56 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what if we went with zero starters?

why not have five extra relievers and have each person throw three innings?

surprise the opposing team by shuffling your guys around occasionally.

1. we have dead weight right now (in terms of starters), and it puts our bullpen in an overworked situation repeatedly throughout the season.

2. we can’t get FA starting pitchers

3. we have a lot of guys that could use the work

why not?

this isn’t a good idea necessarily, but it can’t be any worse than having four starters…

if you're conditioned to throw

130 pitches a game, throwing every 4th game is not a big deal. In a 5 man rotation, you’re throwing between starts anyway. All you’re doing is adjusting your between start routine. If all this is true, then we should see some dramatic changes in spring training this year.

Four man rotation

It scares me to imagine what a 4 man rotation can do to the development of the younger pitchers on this team. Millwood and Padilla will both be gone after this season (presumably). Signing a veteran pitcher is possible, but who knows how likely. The strength of the rotation will come from the development and success of the many talented young pitchers in the organization. How scary is it to imagine 3-4 of our young starters being pushed into a 4 man rotation, throwing 120-130 pitches a game. This is intensified with the fact that JD et al are suggesting contention in 2010. This means that Holland/Feliz may be pushed towards the rotation by July/Autust of this year, or perhaps into competing for a job in spring training in 2010. Can their arms adjust to this new pressure in such a short time? My thoughts are maybe, but it sure sounds scary to consider. Their is a lot of faith in these young arms. Dramatic change and high expectations make me feel like a sure path to injury.

"You taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore."

by Prognosis Negative on Dec 23, 2008 12:38 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no kidding

You do this stuff with 4 veterans on your team that are durable, not young kids you’re breaking into the show. That’s expecting too much from them. I have no problem if they want to bring pitch counts in the 115-130 pitches but do it in a 5 man rotation to where their arms can rest.
