Teixeira to the Yankees
Mark Teixeira has reportedly agreed to an 8 year, $180 million deal with the New York Yankees.
I'm trying to think of something else meaningful to say here, but don't really have anything. The Yankees are moving into a new stadium and have made clear their commitment to spend top dollar on the top players on the free agent market. They've now signed C.C. Sabathia, the best starting pitcher on the free agent market, and Mark Teixeira, the top position player.

Tex
I’m really surprised that the Angels or Red Sox didn’t end up signing Tex. Both had a pretty obvious need for offense and money to spend.

That's the Yanks too

The Yankees had a gaping hole at first base and no shortage of money.
They also added a good glove to that infield whihc it sorely needed. Plus it wouldn’t hurt to add some “youth” to that team.

I was pulling for the Yanks, if the NY media thinks the Cowboys locker-room has no chemistry just wait until they get a full season of two coolers with diva attitudes.

You really think Tex is that bad?
It seems people only soured on him around here when he got to be extremely negative about the team.
He's not. People just like to hate.
He was beastly as hell down the stretch for the Halos last year and is one of the top overall players in baseball.

No I don't see him as a great clubhouse presence. He doesn't seem to have one of those personalities that guys rally around.
But I also don’t see him as this cancerous cooler-type who ruins any clubhouse he walks into.
To hear people talk around here you’d think putting Tex and A-Rod into the same locker room at the same time is gonna cause some sort of cataclysm that will result in the End of the Good Face as prophesied by the ancient scrolls of Showalter or something.

no, but i do think
there is a pretty good chance that the yankees are going to become baseball’s version of the cowboys. the media glare, the ridiculous contracts, the championship or bust expectations, the stat sheet driven players, etc are going to make them the most talented team ever to miss or narrowly make the playoffs. with the red sox and rays in that division, i really think there is a good chance that happens.
The lack of a salary cap is a huge difference there.
The Cowboys can’t just go out and buy the two or three top FA’s every year like the Yanks can.

The Cowboys - Yankees comparison
The difference is, the Yanks really are signing two of the best players. The Yanks are still sorta old, but, who did they have to give up for C.C., Tex, and A.J? Nada. They don’t really need draft picks.
I was pulling for the Nippon Ham Fighters...
but this is a pretty good consolation prize. A heck of a lot better than the Angels.

I think he’s kind of douchey and huge tool, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all.
The idea that signing him isn’t going to be great for the Yanks because he’s some sort of clubhouse poison would make me laugh if it weren’t being bandied about by people I would otherwise consider pretty knowledgeable baseball fans.

But even the most knowledgeable fans
buy into the chemistry myth sometimes. I agree that Teixeira is a little cold, but it seems pretty silly to me to suggest that him not being the life of the party somehow means he’s going to drag the Yankees down. They are going to win a ton of games with that kind of run support and that rotation. Averaging 6 runs a game is going to help chemistry a whole lot, and his defense certainly won’t hurt it either.

they don’t have to do anything, and there are other catchers out there. I cannot imagine that the front office in Boston didn’t at least think there was a possibility Tex would sign with NYY and that they have a plan to go forward from there.
And trading for Salty or Teagarden doesn’t exactly make them huge favorites in 2009. If they’re worried about reacting to the Teixeira signing they’ll go sign someone like Lowe who is probably a better bet to have an impact this year than either young catcher is.

Wrong.
If Boston wanted to “make a splash” they wouldn’t negotiate every contract like it’s a chess endgame. They will methodically approach every chance to make the team better, but they won’t get emotional about it no matter what the media or fanbase says.
They just lost out on Teixeira for refusing to overpay (by jumping in and making a splash); do you think they’re going to suddenly do an about face and overpay (with Buchholz) for Salty?

I’ve been to some games up at Fenway (which is the best baseball setting in the country, in my opinion) and found the fans to be genuinely decent people. But I must admit, one of my fondest memories at the Ballpark in Arlington was one year when the Red Sox were in town. Me and a few friends were engaging in some friendly banter back and forth with some Sox fans when all of the sudden a group of drunken Yankees fans came walking down the aisle…at that point my friends and I, along with the Red Sox fans that we had been talking to dropped our conversation and proceeded to shower the Stankee fans with a chorus of boos, promptly followed by a “YANKEES SUCK” chant that proceeded to get louder and louder ’til it reached the point that just about everyone in the centerfield bleachers, Rangers fans and Red Sox fans alike, were chanting. from Olney via mlbtraderumors
2:55pm: Olney now agrees it’s an eight-year, $180MM deal ($22.5MM per year). Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off. Ha.
2:26pm: Buster Olney says the Yankees have reached an agreement with Teixeira on an eight-year deal worth more than $170MM.
Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here. Each team’s draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round – the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.
Well the Brewers and Blue Jays do get 1st rounder supplemental picks. But still, this is a screwed up system.

Remember how much the Brewers paid for CC
They gave LaPorta for a little more than half a season of CC. He was one of the top prospects in the league and all they have to show for him is a disappointing playoff, a supplemental 1st rounder, and a low 2nd round draft pick for him. Before, they were at least going to get a top draft pick for him that could have still been in the teens. That pick just dropped what, 40 spots?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I don't buy
The “anything can happen once you get it” logic. While anything can happen, the most likely scenario is that the more talented team wins. So if you’re doing anything you can to just squeak into the playoffs, I don’t think that’s as smart as adding one critical piece that you believe can win you a championship.

umm yeah,
but in this case we know what happened. It still wasn’t enough, they paid a huge price, and thanks to Tex going to the Yankees, that move just got worse for them. Its similar to the Braves situation when they traded for Tex. If they made the playoffs while he was there, then mission accomplished. They didn’t and now everyone views that trade as a huge win for Texas.

The Halos didn’t pay that much for him, but I’m talking about the price the Brewers paid for CC and was just comparing it to the Tex situation for the Braves. At the time the deal was made, part of the talk for both of those deals was to wait and see what happened for those teams in the post season. Now, we can see that both teams paid way too high of a price and didn’t get nearly enough out of him. Atlanta was able to somewhat salvage that deal if Kotchman works out, but the Brewers back-up plan took a huge hit now that the top pick they are getting is going to be in the upper 30s and the next one won’t be for a while after that.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Just doing a quick calculation in my head they are only going to drop probably 10-12 million in payroll. It will still be almost 200 million. It is funny how much better they got without increasing payroll but lets not act like they are going to be a middle of the pack payroll next year.

Good signing for the Yanks
Getting their 1st baseman for the future here, someone who could be the anchor of that lineup for years (along with Arod)
But still, you got to think about the Yankees along the same lines as the Cowboys. High paid players, some of which have a questionable ego (from various reports we have seen: Arod, Tex), who are expected to win. A world series ring is the only reasonable finish for them. Anything else would be hell for that team because the media will be all over them.
If this team goes on a long losing steak (like again the Rays and the Red Soxs) you got to think whats going to happen in that clubhouse….

Well not exactly nothing..
I mean i know it may be a cop out but everyone will be healthy coming into the year. Also, every pitcher is one year older. That is improvement in a way. That being said, Id feel a lot better if they signed Sheets of course.

They need to sign Manny too...
Can you imagine Manny, A-Rod, Teixeira (in any order) as your 3, 4, 5 hitters… wow.
Already signed 3 Type A free agents
Can’t sign anymore. Manny is a type A, so they can’t get him
Would, though, have loved to see Manny sign with the Yanks instead of Tex to take the rivalry of the Sox/Yanks to a whole new level…

I hate to be dense, but...
I’ve never heard this before… and I’ve never heard anybody discuss it except on this blog. Why the limit? Draft pick compensation issues?
I think they can sign one more...
There is a loophole in the limit rule where a team can sign as many type A/B players as they lost. The Yankees lost 5: Abreu, Pettitte, Mussina, Marte, and Ivan Rodriguez. They resigned Marte, so that would leave one left, assuming that Mussina retiring doesn’t change the equation (and he did file for FA before announcing his retirement).

Now, Chris Davis? The countdown is already on with him. Tex should be about ready to slide over to DH at least part time by the time the Beasticon and Boras hit the market six years from now.

You don't think..
there is a chance he remains because of his Texas roots? I’m not big into the hometown discount/coming home thing, but he just seems like a Texas kind of guy. Also, I am hoping we are a little more competitive with him vs. when we had Teixeira. This should help us when his contract is up, don’t you think?
Of course there's a chance.
But imo when a guy signs with Boras he’s doing it cause he wants to get the most possible money out of his baseball career.
Could be wrong of course, but most guys who sign with Boras do it for a reason.

The key with Davis will be
If we can get him locked up for a few extra years early. Right now, the guy is a great guy and I don’t doubt he’d sign a deal that keeps him here for a few extra years past FA. The problem is when he gets closer to FA and Boras starts telling him how much money he can make in FA. Davis might be better than that, but I’d hate to chance it.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I expect the Rangers

Like I said..
I don’t really believe the hometown thing is a big factor for most players. Clearly most will go for the biggest dollar. However, some will stay for less money and will make it work if they really want to stay. I am hoping that is the case with Davis.
Unfortunately, I agree with Dirkatron, you get Boras as your agent for a reason.
The Coolers
I thought the rumor was that Tex and A-Rod didn’t get long while they were both here. As I see it, if they didn’t get along it’s because they’re both cut from the same cloth. I get the impression that both of those guys carry themselves with sort of holier-than-thou attitudes that rub a lot of teammates the wrong way. They both put up great stats, but they are entities unto themselves. Something about both A-Rod and Tex just rubs people wrong. They don’t inspire anyone and they’re not leaders.
The Yanks won’t win the World Series with those guys. In that respect, the comparisons to the Cowboys of this year are very apt.
How would you feel if you were Riccardi?

Ken Rosenthal on the Rangers
One slugger to watch: Pat Burrell. The Rays could sign either Burrell or Jason Giambi if Bradley lands with the Cubs. The Mariners also like Burrell, and the Rangers could view him as an option if they do not trade for the Tigers’ Gary Sheffield. The Reds have publicly stated an interest in Burrell, but he likely will rise out of their price range.
The Rangers want to purge salary — right-hander Kevin Millwood will earn $11 million next season, and his $12 million club option for 2010 will become guaranteed if he pitches 180 innings next season. Righty Vicente Padilla is owed $13.75 million in 2009 salary and buyout and first baseman Hank Blalock is due $6.2 million in the final year of his contract. Trading one or more of those players would help clear payroll for a free agent such as righty Ben Sheets. Of course, to move Millwood or Padilla, the Rangers might need to include cash or take back salary in return …
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8980832/Angels-standing-pat-on-offense-…-for-now
Blalock
I still don’t really understand why the Rangers exercised Blalock’s option if they didn’t already have a deal in place to trade him (assuming that the Rangers are trying to dump salary).

Lowe to the Mets?
This would suck. Bucholz would stay in Boston and it removes a place for Millwood or Padilla to go.
Mark Teixeira’s agreement with the New York Yankees on Tuesday clears the way for the New York Mets to sign Derek Lowe, the free-agent pitcher who had been on the periphery of the Yankees’ shopping list. The Mets and Lowe are deep in negotiations, according to a source, and while an offer has not yet been made, the 35-year-old sinkerballer is the Mets’ prime target.

"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Possible Tie?
The Red Sox most glaring hole for 2009 was and continues to be catcher. Now, they have nothing there. Not addressing that need now seems less likely.
Not spending to get Teix, losing him to NYY, and not addressing their top need (catcher) just seems a big PR risk. I don’t think the fans would be stoked if all the Sox do this offseason is bring back the brutal bat of Vtek when Empire brings in CC, Teix, and AJB.
This may be a reach, but I do think the Sox will adress the C need for 2009 in something other than Vtek. How they would do it or what they would give, I have no clue obviously.
So, is Tea or Slaty a big splash? Don’t know, but it is clearly a move that addresses their top weakness for 2009.

In perspective.
In the past two weeks, the Yankees have committed 20 years and $423 million (estimated) to three players.
The GDP of Micronesia in 2007, according to the World Bank, was $369 million.
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
Opt Out Clause
Well, CC could always opt out of his current deal in three years. Odds are, he probably will. So all this hand wringing about how much money the Yankees are spending seems a bit premature.
What’s worse, the fact that the Yankees are reinvesting all the recently freed payroll (Giambi, etc.) into more productive players, or the fact that the Florida Marlins opened 2008 with a payroll of $21,811,500 and received $25 million in revenue sharing?

Just a guess
But the Phillies were probably middle of the pack somewhere around 80 or so. They have at least one or two very good players who aren’t earning a whole lot yet. Cole Hammels is going to break the bank in a few years.
The Rays are probably around 25. They have some great players, all prearbitration, and a few reclaimation projects that aren’t getting big money yet.
Most of the top teams are the highest payroll teams from year to year, because they can pay their way out of mistakes. The Yanks or BoSox might well miss the playoffs this year, but if they do then you will see another crazy spending spree next year. The Mets will likely make one or two more big moves this year. The only big payroll team that doesn’t seem to be doing much right now is the Angels, well and I guess the Cubs but they sorta did theirs in season when they locked up people.
The Rays are likely to be a good team for about 4 years, about the time they have to start deciding do I trade Longoria, Price et al. or do I keep them one more year and then get some mediocre draft picks back for them?
every1 else is just happy to be here.
maybe a 2 or 3 year run of glory. 5 years max, and then back to the rest of the lot… meanwhile, the yanks keep the glory decade in and out.

the only thing that keeps teams even remotely competitive is the 6 year window. maybe you can get enough prospects to prosper for 6-8 seasons but 90% of the top talent will go to about 4 or 5 teams afterwards no matter how much you win. watch what happens with tampa. they got like 4-6 year window before it all falls apart and they are all playing for the yanks or sox or angels or dodgers…

Sign three big FAs in the same year, because if you’re going to lose your #1 draft pick, sign a whole rack of types "A"s in the same year. Also, sign everyone the Red Sox would look at leaving Manny as the only big FA acquisition left, and you know the Red Sox aren’t going to sign him.

By how much right now, though?
You gotta figure they’re still looking for another starter… Probably Andy Pettitte?
We should sign Trevor Hoffman
to a one-year deal and then trade him at the deadline for prospects like we did with Gagne.
My ideal offseason
Sign Hoffman on a 1 year deal and Sheets on a 2 year deal. Keep Millwood and Padilla. I would feel great about the Rangers chances for the playoffs next year if that happened. Get an actual ace for the rotation, shore up the bullpen with a great relief pitcher. You have 2 veterans in contract years and then the best of the rest for only 2 rotation spots. CJ, FX2, Rupe, and Benoit aren’t closing games out while the latter 2 aren’t being relied on to be top set-up men. The offense would be great and I think the defense would do good enough to not hurt the pitching too much.

Fuentes might be as good as Hoffman, but he sure as hell isn’t a shit load better. Can you even picture a Ranger pitcher averaging less than 2 walks an inning?

Ugh. Fuentes.
Maybe if he were willing to sign an equal one year deal, then… maybe. He’s gonna want a 2 or 3 year deal for a lot of money though.

I hate paying for relievers who can save games.

I totally agree with you 100%
I think two spots in the rotation for the youngsters is enough. They will all end up getting their opportunity anyway since injuries always occur every year to starting pitchers, especially ours. I feel good about that rotation if only we can get the Millwood and Padilla of 2006 and at least 30 starts from Sheets. I think McCarthy will surprise a lot of people and breakthrough next season. I know Harrison will improve and maybe Hurley can pitch at league average. I also think that Holland will show up in the second half, and so will Feliz, but as a reliever. Our offense is fine, even with Metcalf at 3B, although I would prefer Crede or Duran. Should we trade Blalock and let Ramirez DH and catch occasionally?

seems pretty inevitable that Manny signs with the Dodgers now.

true - he loves COFers
How did Bowden manage to keep his job? Seemed like he was sure to get fired after the season ended, and wasn’t he also mentioned to be involved in the Latin FA kickback scandals?

He's a Rollins College alumn.

Another NYY Signing Today
Kevin Cash. Another from the Sox. Insurance for Jorge says Joel Sherman.
This is the perfect time for Doug Melvin to trade Prince Fielder to the Angels.
It's a crazy messed-up world... It's a doggy-dogg world...
Ah, no! Why?
Prince is really good.

The angels don't have to worry about the division
Can’t say the same once they get in the playoffs….
But they know they can kick everybodies ass in this division.
I don't see how a lineup like this is a sure thing to win the division
1) 3B Figgins
2) 2B Kendrick
3) OF/DH Vlad
4) 1B Morales
5) CF Hunter
6) OF Rivera
7) OF/DH Matthews
8) C Napoli
9) SS Aybar
by Randy Richardson on Dec 23, 2008 10:42 PM CST up reply actions
Ya, and that's assuming Kendrick can even stay on the diamond all year
If we added Ben Sheets and the rest of our rotation could just somehow be solid, we could have a chance, especially if Saunders and Santana regress.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
Lost the last sentance
(shakes fist at LSB 2.0)
That’s unlikely though.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
i dont know how its possible
but you inserted more ifs into that assessment than ben sheets has had injuries
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Dec 23, 2008 10:52 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah
Things aren’t going to come together for us like that. It’s just fun to imagine that it might.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
of course its fun!
in a way this whole blog is one big fantasy of rangers’ success that may some day come.
i think santana will revert back to his ugly home/road splits and saunders may just be a mediocre #3/4. but they still have a solid enough rotation to win 85+ games. that lineup doesnt do much for me but they have always been about small ball and manufacturing runs, which it should be able to do with at least 3 .300 hitters and some other guys who might be able to cough better approximate their HGH-era numbers than they did last year.
i guess i think reacquiring Tex had only a marginal affect on their ability to repeat in the west this year. they were clear favorites before they acquired him, so losing him wont all of a sudden put them behind us or the As.

Aree
That’s a good assessment.
"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
Well
they ended up 12 games ahead of their Pythagorean and that was with a great second half from Tex. They’ve also lost K-Rod who wasn’t the Cy Young pitcher some in the media thought he was, but he was still an excellent RP. So there is reason to see the West as being weak and winnable this year.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
well
weakened, yes. and perhaps winnable. but i dont see it as wide open, i think the Angels are still strong favorites. Rivera is capable of putting up an OPS+ of over a hundred and being a legitimate slugger behind Vlad and Hunter.
the problem is we have always struggled to beat them head to head which is vitally important to beating them in the division race. getting rid of k-rod should help but i’ll take their starting pitching over our offense any day.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Dec 24, 2008 12:02 AM CST up reply actions
If Rivera can stay healthy
that’s a pretty big if. Plus Vlad and Hunter, their two top bats are just getting older and worse. The Angels are still the favorites, but I don’t think its that big of a margin if the Rangers end up with Sheets
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
the Angels are not standing pat though
They might go after Adam Dunn (for their gap in 1B). They are the favorites to land Fuentes (as their closer). Also, they are looking for a starter to replace Garland. I know they are interested in Randy Johnson. They have a lot of cash on hand. I do hope they end up deciding to stick with what they currently have, but that would be pretty surprising to me if they did.

Please let them get Randy Johnson
The thoughts of seeing a 92 year old starter against out offense multiple times a year makes me giddy.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
if we don't get Sheets
I wouldn’t mind us signing Randy Johnson. He pitched excellent after the all-star break last year. Yes he is very old, but he is one of those exceptions, like Clemens and Maddux, that are still useful even at the end of their careers. Plus it’s only for one year, 6-8 M, and he would get some people in the seats.
by coolrangersfan on Dec 24, 2008 12:27 AM CST up reply actions
Plus he can serve as a mentor for our young pitchers
and we can trade him for prospects at the deadline. JD is an expert at doing that.
by coolrangersfan on Dec 24, 2008 12:30 AM CST up reply actions
I also don't like the mentor thing
Let Nolan do that. Hell, he’s the one that taught Randy how to pitch.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
They might be useful in the NL
but that’s about it. Pitching in Arizona in the weakest offensive division in baseball isn’t the same as pitching here.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
So would you rather have Pedro Martinez or Brad Penny?
Or another of those washed up injury risk free agent starters? I do understand that the NL West is extremely weak offensively, but notice that Randy Johnson dominated everyone except St. Louis after July 12. He pitched well in his only start against three of the best offenses in baseball (Cubs, Red Sox, and Tigers) and against the decent offenses (Marlins, Braves and three times against the Rockies). Also, Chase Field is a hitters park, not quite like the Rangers Ballpark, but it does inflate numbers somewhat.

Sheets or bust for the rotation
If its not Sheets, don’t get anyone else unless you are talking about an NRI.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I know you are not convinced
but just take a look at his game log from last year and tell me what you think.
You will notice how he had a quality start in EVERY start, except those two against STL, after the all-star break. That is 11 quality starts out of 13 and I understand why STL is tough for him. Any left-hander would have a tough time against a lineup that features Pujols, Ludwick, and Glaus. I don’t think he has to worry about that team if he signs with the Rangers.
by coolrangersfan on Dec 24, 2008 1:17 AM CST up reply actions
I've seen that
And yeah, I’m not convinced. The NL and AL is just too different. Look at the last time Johnson was in the AL and how terrible that turned out. Look at Clemens and the switch he made from the NL back to the AL. All that game log shows is that Johnson was able to dominate a lot of bad teams. If he was facing some tough competition more than just once a month or w/e, I’d consider it more.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I might be interested in Penny on a one year deal low-cost deal with a team option for a second more expensive year if he's healthy.
But why he’d come here to improve his stock I have no idea, so that prolly ain’t happening.

Saunders and Santana aren't an if
Its pretty much guaranteed they won’t repeat last season.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Santana’s stuff, peripheral stats, and age would lead me to believe that he has a better chance to improve, rather than regress. He is a very, very good pitcher. In some ways he reminds me of Neftali.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
I don't know if I buy the walk rate
He was showing some of the best control in the league last year and seemed to have much better control than he’s ever had (including the minors).
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Yep you're right Salts..
What have the Rangers done this off-season to make up the 21 game gap? Absolutely nothing.
The Angels know they have what it takes to win it in ‘09 and they’ll buy whatever they need to insure that in the years that follow.
The thing is now that the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox are strong the wild card is obsolete in the coming years so you HAVE TO win the division or bust. The Yankees have a pretty damn good pitching staff and a formibale line-up.

Pythaorean though
If the Angels won their expected 88 games and the Rangers won their expected 76 games, you are looking at a 12 game difference. Tex and K-Rod combined gave them 9 wins according to win shares or a little over 12 WARP.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
How many wins do you think Fuentes would give the Angels in 2009 as their closer?

He'd be worth a few
but he doesn’t make up for the loss of K-Rod.

i still think they are sold on giving aradondo a shot.
at closing…
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
well I'm glad that Pythaorean thinks theres a chance..
but would anyone here bet me $500 that the Rangers win the division? doubt it.
I’d love for them to do it but the odds are slim.

but sheets would be a huge addition. it would take a lot going right for us, and probably significant contribution from the farm but it could happen.
but i wouldnt bet even money on it

but are the Angels done shopping? I’d love to see the Vegas odds when they come out.

probably not
maybe they get fuentes with his price plummeting. but it seems unlikely they make a huge splash.
i think if we get sheets and they get fuentes, theyd still have a slight edge on us but it would be an interesting summer at least.

like Smoakin said
If we sign Sheets, this team would be in great position to win the division. Sign Sheets and Hoffman and I think we can be right up there with the Angels for the division race. Their offense is poor and their defense isn’t that good. They won a huge amount of 1 run games last year thanks to a great bullpen and some over-achievement from their rotations. They had to be one of the weakest 100 win teams in recent history.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

More
Radio host said today “The danger is losing 2/3 of the county because it’s all Mets Mets, Boston Boston, Yanks Yanks”.
Then as he said, thats not the danger, we’re already there. It’s happened.
Reminds of the Rangers. We have no chance. We’re in the 2/3..
Which makes you guys really happy I’m sure, since you hate the Rangers, and since you love trades of talent for crap..
If I have to hear about thsi one more time on ESPN...
I might just throw something through the TV.
