Teixeira to the Yankees

Mark Teixeira has reportedly agreed to an 8 year, $180 million deal with the New York Yankees.

I'm trying to think of something else meaningful to say here, but don't really have anything.  The Yankees are moving into a new stadium and have made clear their commitment to spend top dollar on the top players on the free agent market.  They've now signed C.C. Sabathia, the best starting pitcher on the free agent market, and Mark Teixeira, the top position player.

Tex

I’m really surprised that the Angels or Red Sox didn’t end up signing Tex. Both had a pretty obvious need for offense and money to spend.

That's the Yanks too

<<>>

The Yankees had a gaping hole at first base and no shortage of money.

They also added a good glove to that infield whihc it sorely needed. Plus it wouldn’t hurt to add some “youth” to that team.

Not me

I was pulling for the Yanks, if the NY media thinks the Cowboys locker-room has no chemistry just wait until they get a full season of two coolers with diva attitudes.

You really think Tex is that bad?

It seems people only soured on him around here when he got to be extremely negative about the team.

by FuturePants on Dec 23, 2008 3:22 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's not. People just like to hate.

He was beastly as hell down the stretch for the Halos last year and is one of the top overall players in baseball.

So is A-Rod

and I like Tex, but don’t understand where all the “great clubhouse presence” talks come from when most people, including CJ have said the opposite.

No I don't see him as a great clubhouse presence. He doesn't seem to have one of those personalities that guys rally around.

But I also don’t see him as this cancerous cooler-type who ruins any clubhouse he walks into.

To hear people talk around here you’d think putting Tex and A-Rod into the same locker room at the same time is gonna cause some sort of cataclysm that will result in the End of the Good Face as prophesied by the ancient scrolls of Showalter or something.

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 11:52 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no, but i do think

there is a pretty good chance that the yankees are going to become baseball’s version of the cowboys. the media glare, the ridiculous contracts, the championship or bust expectations, the stat sheet driven players, etc are going to make them the most talented team ever to miss or narrowly make the playoffs. with the red sox and rays in that division, i really think there is a good chance that happens.

by clark on Dec 23, 2008 5:03 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The lack of a salary cap is a huge difference there.

The Cowboys can’t just go out and buy the two or three top FA’s every year like the Yanks can.

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 5:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Cowboys - Yankees comparison

The difference is, the Yanks really are signing two of the best players. The Yanks are still sorta old, but, who did they have to give up for C.C., Tex, and A.J? Nada. They don’t really need draft picks.

I think this is semantics.

What a douche means to me might not be what a douche means to you.

I think he’s kind of douchey and huge tool, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all.

The idea that signing him isn’t going to be great for the Yanks because he’s some sort of clubhouse poison would make me laugh if it weren’t being bandied about by people I would otherwise consider pretty knowledgeable baseball fans.

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 7:13 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But even the most knowledgeable fans

buy into the chemistry myth sometimes. I agree that Teixeira is a little cold, but it seems pretty silly to me to suggest that him not being the life of the party somehow means he’s going to drag the Yankees down. They are going to win a ton of games with that kind of run support and that rotation. Averaging 6 runs a game is going to help chemistry a whole lot, and his defense certainly won’t hurt it either.

somebody else has something to say I haven’t read.

Tex probably read this as a hopeless situation – and unless your head is buried in your ass, this is a hopeless situation with this owner and this GM – and he wanted out.

Going to NYC gave him an extra $ 40 million he wouldn’t have made in Texas and he knows this owner wants to win.

I don't think so

they don’t have to do anything, and there are other catchers out there. I cannot imagine that the front office in Boston didn’t at least think there was a possibility Tex would sign with NYY and that they have a plan to go forward from there.

And trading for Salty or Teagarden doesn’t exactly make them huge favorites in 2009. If they’re worried about reacting to the Teixeira signing they’ll go sign someone like Lowe who is probably a better bet to have an impact this year than either young catcher is.

Leave aside Montero and Doumit…the former they couldn’t get a deal done for, and the latter just re-signed.

Who’s out there that is either cheaper (without giving up significant ability) or worth acquiring for more than JD’s price? For example, Tea isn’t far off of Ianetta in Minors numbers or age.

If Boston wanted to “make a splash” they wouldn’t negotiate every contract like it’s a chess endgame. They will methodically approach every chance to make the team better, but they won’t get emotional about it no matter what the media or fanbase says.

They just lost out on Teixeira for refusing to overpay (by jumping in and making a splash); do you think they’re going to suddenly do an about face and overpay (with Buchholz) for Salty?

As a Sox fan I disagree.

I think the Sox FO is much more worried about Ortiz than they might be letting on. A little nugget I saw in one of the reports after the Sox left Texas is that Theo wanted to go to $190M and he was overruled by JWH.

I don’t think the Sox are worried about blocking Lars; he’s could just as easily replace Ortiz in a few years.

I don’t know if this has that big of an effect on negotiations, but I can’t see it hurting. Boston has a solid rotation and a hole at the catcher position. It could be that now Theo feels that his need at catcher is important enough to trade Buchholz.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Good move for the Yankees

They’ve signed 2 top starting pitchers for their rotation, signed a top hitting great defensive 1B, traded for Swisher who should bounce back this year, and still have A-Rod around. The team is filled with douchiness and the injury risk is huge, but there is actually something to look forward to in 2009 for the Yankees.

Why all the hate for the Red Sox?

I’ve been to some games up at Fenway (which is the best baseball setting in the country, in my opinion) and found the fans to be genuinely decent people. The guys we sat around had inherited their awesome seats from an uncle and were just good ol’ fans of baseball. Now, some people get obnoxious about it on the internet, but I don’t think it’s right to paint the whole crew based upon some internet big mouths.

I've seen both Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to Red Sox fans.

But I must admit, one of my fondest memories at the Ballpark in Arlington was one year when the Red Sox were in town. Me and a few friends were engaging in some friendly banter back and forth with some Sox fans when all of the sudden a group of drunken Yankees fans came walking down the aisle…at that point my friends and I, along with the Red Sox fans that we had been talking to dropped our conversation and proceeded to shower the Stankee fans with a chorus of boos, promptly followed by a “YANKEES SUCK” chant that proceeded to get louder and louder ’til it reached the point that just about everyone in the centerfield bleachers, Rangers fans and Red Sox fans alike, were chanting. Good times. :)

from Olney via mlbtraderumors

2:55pm: Olney now agrees it’s an eight-year, $180MM deal ($22.5MM per year). Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off. Ha.

2:26pm: Buster Olney says the Yankees have reached an agreement with Teixeira on an eight-year deal worth more than $170MM.

Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here. Each team’s draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round – the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.

Well the Brewers and Blue Jays do get 1st rounder supplemental picks. But still, this is a screwed up system.

Remember how much the Brewers paid for CC

They gave LaPorta for a little more than half a season of CC. He was one of the top prospects in the league and all they have to show for him is a disappointing playoff, a supplemental 1st rounder, and a low 2nd round draft pick for him. Before, they were at least going to get a top draft pick for him that could have still been in the teens. That pick just dropped what, 40 spots?

Unless you’re absolutely mortgaging your entire future, you always take the move that gets you into the playoffs, imo.

Anything can happen once you’re in, and if you’re goal is to win a championship, you do what it takes to get in whenever you have a chance.

I don't buy

The “anything can happen once you get it” logic. While anything can happen, the most likely scenario is that the more talented team wins. So if you’re doing anything you can to just squeak into the playoffs, I don’t think that’s as smart as adding one critical piece that you believe can win you a championship.

umm yeah,

but in this case we know what happened. It still wasn’t enough, they paid a huge price, and thanks to Tex going to the Yankees, that move just got worse for them. Its similar to the Braves situation when they traded for Tex. If they made the playoffs while he was there, then mission accomplished. They didn’t and now everyone views that trade as a huge win for Texas.

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 11:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

huh

The Halos didn’t pay that much for him, but I’m talking about the price the Brewers paid for CC and was just comparing it to the Tex situation for the Braves. At the time the deal was made, part of the talk for both of those deals was to wait and see what happened for those teams in the post season. Now, we can see that both teams paid way too high of a price and didn’t get nearly enough out of him. Atlanta was able to somewhat salvage that deal if Kotchman works out, but the Brewers back-up plan took a huge hit now that the top pick they are getting is going to be in the upper 30s and the next one won’t be for a while after that.

Can the Rangers compete for the division title with a rotation fo Sheets, Millwood, Padilla, BMac and Harrison?

There is still time for the Angels to improve their team, but simply signing Brian Fuentes isn’t the answer. We’re talking about an Angels team whose third-order Pythagorean record was 84-78, and who just lost Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez. Somewhere, Billy Beane (and Jon Daniels) is smiling.

The funny thing is that

if the NFL did not have a cap then the Cowboys would be the Yankees of the NFL. Financially dominant.

by BillyBobisdrunk on Dec 23, 2008 4:09 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The salary cap is so NOT what hurt the NHL.

There’s tons of blame to go around there, but the salary cap isn’t significantly culpable, imo.

They've run themselves poorly

cap or no. They expanded too much, imho. Tried to make a ‘big 4’ when there really isn’t such a thing.

This.

That’s what I always talk about when the subject of hockey comes up.

ESPN gave them that big deal a while back and for a while they were running themselves like the US was a big four sports market, when really it’s a big 3.

Taking teams out of Canada to put ’em in places like Colombus, Nashville, Dallas, Charlotte, Miami, Phoenix, Tampa, etc just made no freaking long term sense.

there is a big 4, but they expanded into towns where that is just not true, and everyone got greedy.

Not the salary cap. Bettman is a moron who is slowly destroying that league…and yes, I do dislike the guy kindof….

A lot of people have quickly forgotten

just how much money they got rid of thanks to players becoming FAs or retiring. The Yankees will end up with a similar payroll as last year and yet people are making them out to be spending 300 million next season.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Yankees

Just doing a quick calculation in my head they are only going to drop probably 10-12 million in payroll. It will still be almost 200 million. It is funny how much better they got without increasing payroll but lets not act like they are going to be a middle of the pack payroll next year.

Oh and after a quick look in 2013 they have 90 million already committed to 4 players. CC, Tex, AJ, and Arod

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 23, 2008 8:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No one complained last year

when the Yankees put up a 200 million dollar payroll and that’s my main point. Because the Yankees have spent so much in one offseason, fans of other teams are saying that they are destroying the game. In reality, their payroll is basically the same yet they weren’t destroying the integrity of the game last year.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I've heard plenty of complaints

but it wasn’t that big of a story. It was more or less some complaining ending in, “Well that’s the Yankees.” Now I’ve seen people think that they are destroying the integrity of the game.

a guy who pretty much everyone has pegged as a number three? i would have thought he had more value.

by clark on Dec 23, 2008 5:20 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He was a consensus top 5 overall prospect last off season. The guy the Yanks wouldn't throw in a Johan deal.

He has true ace stuff. Go back and look at his k-rates as he was coming up through the minors. He can blow people away when he’s right.

There are genuine doubts about him after last year, including some injury concerns, but a lack of top end stuff isn’t one of them.

Where are you getting that he’s been pegged by everyone as a number three?

by thedirkatron on Dec 23, 2008 5:38 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

haven't heard the Hughes as a #3 consensus

Like you, my impression was that he was an elite young starter prospect with some injury questions. In addition to his dominant minor league stats, pay attention to the fact that he is only a couple months older than Derek Holland.

Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.
