Red Sox Scout Salty

Per MLBTR Link

According to Boston Globe reporter Nick CafardoRed Sox special assistant Allard Baird recently scouted Salty. Cafardo added that Saltalamacchia's defense didn't look solid on that particular night, though. Cafardo also notes that other scouts who have seen the catcher in winter ball thought his defensive skills were up to par.

I know, I know.  What's new?  DWL ball is on break until Friday.  However, Salty did not play in the most recent two games played.  He was playing pretty much every game.  Looks like Salty was sent home or sent somewhere else maybe?

Also, the Red Sox might have a little bit of pressure on them since the Yankees are signing everyone.

I know this has been like beating a dead horse, but here it is.  Kick it.

Clay effing Buchholz

Or bust.

I don’t want Masterson or Bowden.

agreed Buchholz or Bust

I don’t see why you would make any other deal unless they dealt both Masterson and Bard to us, lol

If we are able to sign Sheets and get Buchholz, I think our rotation would look much better and with our offense anything can happen.

i don't like signing a 45 yr old pitcher with back problems

I will however sign a 30 yr old with elbow problems :P

yup

they can give us a top notch pitcher for a top not catcher or suck it, our future issue isnt gonna be our limited amount of #3 and 4 pitchers…

all or nothing.

Salty is not a top notch C. He might become one, but it is not certain. OTOH Bowden and Masterson are pretty much #3s right now, and they could be #2s and they have the potential to better than most of the pitchers on the Rangers staff right now.

Any talk that the Sox will give up Buchholz would have to center on the Sox needing to “make a move” (which I don’t think they will do). Why wouldn’t the Rangers feel a similar need? The AL West looks like it’s pretty much wide open with the Angels losing a lot of talent after vastly overpreforming their pythagorean record. I’m surprised more Rangers fans aren’t interested in making a move now in an attempt to make the playoffs.

We're not interested in making a push for the playoffs right now

Because our best guys (Holland, Feliz, Andrus, Smoak) are currently at least a year away. So unless we’re overwhelmed, theres really no reason for us to do anything but hold onto our top trade chips and watch the guys we currently have sort themselves out. Trading for middle-of-the-road talents like Masterson or Bowden (who haven’t really shown anything but an ability to pitch out of the bullpen) just to be trading for them really doesn’t add anything more to our plan but more variables.

Don't be ridiculous

Bowden and Masterson are not #2’s or #3’s right now

LMAO

Bowden has had 1 start in the Majors and Masterson was so good as a starter that the Red Sox chose to stick him in the bullpen during the playoffs. Neither are “pretty much #3s right now” and neither has ever had the potential to be number 2s.

God.

I don’t get all this Masterson love from the Red Sox fans at all. He doesn’t have very good control, doesn’t strike very many people out and doesn’t have overwhelming stuff. So what am I missing?

Masterson

Is just overhyped, like Ian Kennedy was.

He reminds me a lot of Kam Loe.

Good comp

He is to the Red Sox what Loe was to us when he first came up. Obviously not a perfect comparison, but there is the same hype and newly found ceiling that he never had in the minors thanks to too much hype.

just a thought. they seem like an absolutely perfect trade partner right now.

Someone is going to be short some players because of the Yankees...

We can thank them for that…I’d be shocked if we didn’t get some legit calls for our MLB pitchers and hitters…I’ll be somewhat shocked if we don’t get something done either. If JD feels there is some reasonable deals to be made for our starters or hitters he will not wait. You get the feeling from what he’s been saying that he’s loading up for 2010.

by slimshadty12 on Dec 24, 2008 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

One recurring theme from the trade front

is that teams always seem to be trying to give us a starter who happens to be a 3, 4 or 5. We simply don’t need a back of the rotation type. Daniels is correct to wait this out for a 1or a 2 guy. Sheets would be fine (let’s hope he stays healthy), Cain or Sanchez fine, one of the Marlin’s top guys fine, Buchholz fine, even a top flight prospect 2 or 3 years away would be fine. Just not somebody who is the equal of Harrison, Hurley, McCarthy, and so on. You have to assume, even though I don’t like to think about this, that some of the following will turn about to be a 3, 4 or 5 guys: Feliz, Holland, Main, Perez, Boscan, etc. Please, please, do not accept any trade without a frontline starter.

on a related note

The Marlins — speaking internally about several veteran free agent catchers, including Henry Blanco and Michael Barrett — decided against an offer for Pudge Rodriguez and likely would be interested only if he would willing to play for the minimum or close to it.

I am intrigued for 2009

Totally agree. We can play hard ball right now with Boston. AND SHOULD!

I really think the Angels are vulnerable in 2009 with a weak offense. Yes they have a nice pitching staff, but if you don’t score runs it doesn’t matter. Could this cause JD and Nolan to tweak their plan…just a bit. Why NOT compete in 2009!!?!?!

Frankly, a two year deal for Randy Johnson and signing Sheets (would he accept a one or two year deal in order to re-establish his value) are appropriate as a bridge to the kids. Even if they break down, you simply plug in a kid and continue on… no harm no foul.

We have the offense NOW to compete, just an improvement to middle of the pack pitching will get the job done I believe.

Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

"just and improvement to middle of the pack pitching will get the job done"

it takes more than improving in the middle when we had the worst pitching staff in the majors last year. also, middle of the pack pitching isn’t going to bring in another 18 wins or so.

Wait 'til the year after next

by NothinG on Dec 24, 2008 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

Hold on, there

League average run prevention would have given the Rangers the 2nd best run differential in the AL last year, just behind Boston and well ahead of LAA. Middle of the pack pitching makes the Rangers a serious contender and might have meant winning the AL West in 2008. Texas was 200 RUNS over league average in runs allowed last year. Average would be absolutely wonderful.

I feel the same way

If the Rangers can just have a league avg pitching staff and keep the same offense, they will compete for the division title. See 2004 stats.

And considering their history

and ballpark, that’s probably a smart way to go. Get the best pitchers you can, but don’t count on better than an average rotation, and back them up with great hitting, improved defense, and a solid bullpen.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Dec 24, 2008 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

and

if the Rangers had an MLB average pitching staff, typical fans would look at it as a league leading pitching staff because they don’t know what a decent pitching staff looks like. It would bring warm and fuzzies all over Ranger world

by texasraider on Dec 24, 2008 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Of course it would be great to have middle of the pack pitching

especially so in our park,
but you have to remember that the easiest way for us to get there
is to get a couple or three frontline guys. You can’t expect 11 pitchers
to all improve a little bit.

"Evolution happened, now get over it." Michael Shermer

by rodcarew on Dec 27, 2008 9:30 AM CST reply actions

Can't expect 11 pitchers to improve

They have many more than 11 pitchers that will contribute each year, or have the potential to. You need several of those guys to do well any year if you’re going to contend, and you just need several out of the pool of guys, not “all 11 of 11” as you seemed to put it. Given the age of many of these guys it is far from unreasonable to think that several could take steps forward this year, and that others who had terrible years in 2008 might regress and not be terrible.

Said more simply, there is at least a “mediocre” level of talent already on the pitching staff. If they just perform up to their “mediocre” talent level and stay reasonably healthy (a major problem in 2008) the offense could do wonders.
