Sammy Sosa, 2009 Ranger DH?

Sammy Sosa says that he's still waiting for an offer to play in 2009.

Normally, my reaction would be, who cares?

But of course, Sosa was brought here in 2007 to be the DH, at the urging of Rudy Jaramillo and Ron Washington.  And while he didn't seem, to me, to be very good, the spin from the organization and much of the local media was that Sosa was a terrific success story and a productive member of the team.

And the Rangers are supposedly wanting to get more righthanded at the plate.  The only spot, other than third base, where a righty bat could really be added is at DH (which presupposes that Hank Blalock will be dealt, although that seems to be treated as a fait accompli in some circles anyway).  The desperation for a righty bat is such that the Rangers are supposedly kicking the tires on Gary Sheffield.

Now, personally, I find the reports of the Rangers' interest in Pat Burrell more appealing...but if they really want to go the cheap, washed-up righty DH bat route, and if they really believe the spin that was generated during 2007 about Sideshow Sammy, then why aren't they looking at bringing him back?

I mean, there's the problem that he can't hit righties, and that he feels he should be a full-time player, and of course, the fact that we heard all during 2007 that the Rangers couldn't possibly disrespect such a legend by releasing him (even though they had no real role for him late in the 2007 season and no other team wanted him).

But that, if you believe the hype, was irrelevant.  Sideshow Sammy was the team's first half MVP, according to T.R. Sullivan, and should have been the team's All Star rep, according to various ESPN talking heads.

Given that he was supposedly so great, and given that the Rangers apparently are so desperate for a righty DH they're considering the likes of Sheffield, why wouldn't they just bring Sideshow back?

Wow, a way to bring back the sosa hate has been found

But you know, no, I dont think Sosa was a failure in Texas.

His fluke (lucky and unrepeatable yes, but it still happened) RISP numbers raised his production to semi-respectable status despite his below average numbers for a DH, blocking Botts doesn’t appear to have been of any importance at all, and for those of us who wern’t resenting every at bat he got the 600th homerun and the lead up to it was entertaining.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Dec 25, 2008 9:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Then shouldn't they bring him back?

They want a veteran righty bat to DH, and replace Blalock. Why not bring back Sosa, if he wasn’t a failure before?

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 25, 2008 9:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I listed 3 reasons it wasn't a failure.

None of them are currently applicable.

As for the org itself, is the reasoning really necessary? We all know they arn’t considering him. 2 years older, another year out of baseball, the 600th homerun spectacle is gone (what, you want them to admit that was a reason?), their needs have changed, etc. And some rumor that the rangers had a non-serious conversation about Sheffield in the winter meetings.. whatever, call me when it happens. I doubt he is their first option if Blalock is traded.

This is clearly about 2007 and your apparently remaining resent of the love he got. Why don’t you explain why it offends you so? Or tell me how Botts and whatever random DH they could have used up until the point Sosa was benched would have effected that season or helped us in the future that makes it an issue worth bringing up now?

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Dec 25, 2008 10:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with most of what you said

His fluke luck made him somewhat productive but it was a terrible predictor of future success. I see no reason to bring him back and I hope he is not brought back but that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t somewhat productive here.

Was he busted for something during the 2007 season that was never reported? Did he make a fool of himself outside the clubhouse? Screw with team chemistry? Call out the team? Did I miss something?

sammy signing

i get that this is tongue and cheek but i also think that if this is some sort of modest proposal, the thing you are mocking is the fact that the rangers are going after the likes of gary sheffield and pat burrell, right?

Because actually, you really should go after Sosa rather than Sheffield (for sure) and Burrell (most likely).

I can’t really decide if the rangers really do need a RH DH. Does bringing someone in block Ramirez? Wasn’t he going to catch in AAA full time anyway? Is anybody else getting blocked? I can kind of see the virtues of bringing in a righty DH (veteran or otherwise).

by ab03 on Dec 25, 2008 11:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What does the number 1.024 mean to you?

Cause that was Sammy’s OPS versus lefties in ’07.

Considering our DH in ’09 is likely going to be Franky the Cat or Hankles, this move could actually make sense.

The only reason Sammy was such a drain in ‘07 was that R-Was stupidly decided to let him play against all pitchers instead of just lefties. And of course Sammy can’t hit righties anymore so he went .222/.267/.410 versus RHP in ‘07. But that’s not his fault. He is what he is. He can’t help that we tried to make him do something he can’t do. That’s on R-Was.

A straight platoon of Sosa and Cat could be a super cheap way to get a ~.850 OPS out of DH spot in ’09.

It won’t happen, of course, but it’s not as ridiculous as people here seem to think.

by thedirkatron on Dec 25, 2008 11:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

As you said, It won't happen

because people want shit changed. Do I disagree with you re: Sosa/Cat? Not necessarily, other than Sosa is one more year removed from steroid use. In all seriousness, I see your point…the platoon makes sense (given Sosa returns to 07 perf), problem is the potential for retarding the growth of a youngin’.

Good point, but
The only reason Sammy was such a drain in ‘07 was that R-Was stupidly decided to let him play against all pitchers instead of just lefties.

This is the reason this is so rediculous – it’s very, very likely a near certainty that Ron would make the same mistake again. As long as Wash is manager Sammy would be the full-time DH and placed somewhere in the lineup where he can “break up” the left-handed hitters – not used in a lefty-killing bench bat role.

R-Was would do what JD/Nolan told him to do. And if he didn't, then he's an easy guy to fire.

And also, Sosa at this point would be much more likely to accept a role where he got 200-250 PA’s and be happy doing it.

Well

you are talking about a Sosa that hasn’t played since 2007 and has only played for one season of the past 3. Cat hasn’t posted an .850 OPS since 2001. If you’re talking about strictly against righties, the last time he had an OPS that good was in 2003. And this is the same Cat that posted a .741 OPS this past season and a .781 OPS in 2007. There are plenty of other factors to consider with Cat since he has had inconsistent playing time and some injury problems plus would probably be better off playing only as a DH, but still, that’s being pretty optimistic to think that him and Sosa give you anything close to an .850 OPS next year.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

It was even more inexplicable to see the sammy hate, coupled with AJMs oral servicing of Cat, who was more expensive, and less useful.

You know

It’s hard to scoreboard or anything at this point, but these Mavs are going to surprise people, I think.

At this point in the season, there are 3 teams playing for 2 spots: Dallas, Phoenix, and Portland.

They’re all talented, but I honestly think Dallas is a notch above either. Phoenix is discombobulated and Portland can’t get their big men to play inside. My money is on Phoenix and Dallas. We’ll see, I suppose, but I think talks of the lottery for the Mavs were premature. Just have to put away a few of those wins against big-time teams before I can shake my dick at anyone.

P.S. Kidd has sealed quite a few wins with his supposed shitty defense. I guess to the habitual bitch-and-moaners, strips, steals, and weakside help don’t count when assessing defense. Fortunately the NBA does count such things.

of the season where I’ve watched more than just a few minutes here and there. I haven’t been watching much of the NBA since the Heat debacle from a few years ago. The Mavs didn’t look great, but with the way some people talk about them this season, I was expecting them to get dominated.

And I love seeing guys like Kidd and Barea play. Offensively, they aren’t much at this stage in their careers. But I love me some hustle and seeing PGs get those rebounds and always putting that extra effort there.

This is what I was mentioning last week or so when all the sheffield talk popped up.
If they are even partially considering sheffield why not just bring sammy back, he could probably do just as well for less money.

Now does this mean I want sheffield or sosa to be the RH DH? Absofreakinlutely not! They have a good righthanded dh bat already in max ramierez.

Max

That was my initial thought but I can’t imagine carrying 3 catchers on the team is a good idea and Max probably needs time behind the plate (i.e. in AAA).

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

I agree

But i’d much rather see him at DH than getting someone like sheffield or sosa.

Rangers not interested in Sosa

From FWST…

Daniels says Rangers not interested in Sosa

I just got an e-mail back from Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels. I asked him if the Rangers would have any interest in Sammy Sosa, who didn’t play this year after having a productive season for the Rangers in 2007, but wants to play again. Don’t expect to see Sosa back in Arlington in 2009 was basically Daniels’ response. “I don’t think we’ll pursue Sammy,” Daniels wrote. “He did a great job for us in 2007, but I’m not sure it’s a fit for us this year.”

Daniels also addressed another topic. While some owners and general managers are upset with the Yankees shelling out big bucks for CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira, Daniels isn’t one of them. The spending he’s more concerned about is with Anaheim, which has money after losing both Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez (New York Mets). “We’ll watch closely to see how Anaheim reallocates its resources – that’s more of a concern to us than the Yankees at this point. The Angels have a track record of developing good players and combine that with a sizeable payroll – that’s what we’ll focus on, not New York.”

Yet another reason I like Daniels

He could be like some GMs and complain that the Yankees are ruining baseball, or he can go about his business and do what he needs to do.

I agree

Talking about the Angels spending. Read this:

Angels GM Tony Reagins told Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times Wednesday that his club is “not likely” to retain outfielder Garret Anderson. Reagins also mentioned that the organization has no plans to pursue free agent outfielders Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell. Reagins, of course, had already written off the idea of the Halos inking Manny Ramirez.

The Angels already have a fine outfield built around Vladimir Guerrero, Juan Rivera and Torii Hunter, with Reggie Willits providing depth off the bench. Gary Matthews Jr. probably won’t be ready for Opening Day after undergoing knee surgery in October, but he’ll also be a major contributor.

That is good news for us.

Its not a bad OF

but I don’t know if I would consider that a fine enough OF to not consider a Burrell, Manny, or Dunn. Its good to see for the Rangers. This makes me feel all the more confident in the division being a toss-up next year.

It's crazy how they have spent so much money on that OF

and ours is still much better offensively and defensively at only a fraction of the cost.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 26, 2008 11:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You think our OF is better defensively than a GMJ-Torri-Rivera OF?

Maybe we’re better when they run old stumpy knees out there in RF, but even then I wouldn’t say we’re “much better”.

GMJ us a very good defensive COF’er and Torri is a very good defensive CF’er.

by thedirkatron on Dec 28, 2008 6:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

True

I was assuming that Guerrero will play RF, my bad. How good is Rivera defensively though? I know Cruz has a good reputation on defense. Our guys have cannons of an arm, but you are right, Matthews and Hunter do cover a lot of range, and in that aspect, they are at least as good as we are.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 28, 2008 8:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I mean cover a lot of ground not range.

Also, they have great arms too if Guerrero plays out there.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 28, 2008 8:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so sure about that

I don’t think that GMJ or Torrii are as good as their reps, and I think a Murphy-Byrd-Hamilton-Cruz gang is at least as good in the field as their top 4. Both GMJ and Torii were below average according to fangraphs defensive info.

I disagree

GMJ is not a good defensive COF, at least that’s not what the stats show. Hunter isn’t that good in CF anymore. Rivera is also not that good of an OF to carry them and is past his prime with some injury problems these past couple of years. The only weakness we have defensively is Hamilton in CF and Murphy if he plays CF. And I can’t see Murphy playing much centerfield nor can I see a player like Hamilton not improving in CF. He’s got the tools for it, his problem seemed to be more inexperience.

I think it's close.

But certainly we can agree that the above assertion that we’re “much better” is false?

by thedirkatron on Dec 30, 2008 2:41 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

but I think that over the net 12-18 months the scales tip decidedly in the Rangers’ favor if Borbon continues on track and it shifts Hamilton to RF.

You are right in your argument.

I worded it wrong. I meant to say “much better” in the offensive side of things and only better defensively.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 30, 2008 5:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That I agree with.

Especially if we go with Hambone in LF, Byrd in CF and Cruz in RF.

I think Byrd is a better CF than Hamilton, and Hamilton would set the world on fire as a LF.

That’d be one of the best overall OF’s in the game.

But you just know that for 40 or so games this year they’ll find a way to work Cat in RF and Murphy in CF or some shit.

I could see Dunn playing well for ANA

in a DH role. Lots of walks + great power. His strikeouts seem like a red flag, but they have so many contact hitters already.

I know I’d be a little unsettled seeing him go 1-3 every other game against us, but that 1 being a 2 run HR, coupled with a walk or 2.

exactly...

the Angels are not done shopping yet and have money to spend, that’s of concern..the Rangers have no money to spend and have to do this, that, and the other in order to sign Ben Sheets…

Who can the Angels get

to help them that much next year? If they’re not planning to pursue Dunn, Burrell, Abreu, or Manny, then who are they adding that makes them that great next year.

They will probably get a starter to replace Garland

and sign Fuentes as their closer. However, they think that their offense is set, which is a huge mistake. That infield, as it currently stands, is just awful offensively (especially if they go with Figgins and Aybar at the left side of their infield).

by coolrangersfan on Dec 27, 2008 1:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

who can the angels get?

whoever the hell they want..that’s the point, the ball is in their court.

The Yankees slid in and got Teixera at the last second, until all the top guys are signed I would not believe anything i read.

The “we are not planning on signing such and such free agent” often times is posturing. If they feel they need to sign someone to stay atop the west they will do so unlike Big Daddy.

Adam Dunn at 1B makes sense for them.

Also, Oliver Perez might have interest in playing for them.

by coolrangersfan on Dec 27, 2008 1:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Perez isn't that good

100 ERA+ in a contract year, way too many walks, too many HRs for a guy who gives up that many walks, and pretty poor fielding independent ERAs.

It might be posturing

but it usually isn’t. They might say that they aren’t too interested or they haven’t talked to them yet, but you don’t usually see GMs say they have no interest in a FA and then go out and sign them.

Yeah, they can go out and get whoever they want, but the point is that they aren’t planning on getting anyone that will actually help.
