Unintentional humor of the day
Hal McCoy on the latest move by the Reds:
The Cincinnati Reds filled their leadoff hole by signing free agent outfielder Willy Taveras to a two-year deal.
Taveras, who turned 27 on Christmas Day, hit only .251 with a .308 on base average with the Colorado Rockies, but stole 68 bases in 75 tries.
They may have lost Junior Griffey and Adam Dunn, but hey, at least the Reds have Willy Taveras leading off for them now...

I don't understand
Why this is humorous. Nothing in the article suggests he is expected to replace Griff’s or Dunn’s output.

It is humorous to suggest...
…that signing Taveras would fill a team’s leadoff hole.
He’s a terrible hitter.

I laughed
It was a two-part joke: first, the fact that Taveras “solves” their leadoff situation; secondly, the fact that it was evidently a priority, over replacing the production of Griffey and Dunn.
Just a shitshow. Good for the Reds.

Well
He did leave out this: “But in 2007 Taveras hit .320 in 97 games with a .367 on base average with the Rockies.”

Yeah...
but in ‘05 and ’06 he posted .325 and .333 OB%’s in full seasons with Houston. I think that is probably a more realistic idea of where he could finish.
I don’t think he’s a horrible player. His defense and speed make him an asset. However to suggest that he can fill a teams leadoff spot I believe is pretty optimistic.

or maybe
i just thought of the exact same thing and posted it 7 minutes too late, Now i’m not sure if that happened but it seems like the most reasonable and realistic possibility we have on the table here now isn’t it?

Its funny...
A lot of my friends at Ohio at Reds fans and were telling me all last quarter that they were getting Salty…
And they end up with some 32 year old journeyman.
But I think Tavares is better than you people think. For some reason, all of you think fast players are the devil and I can’t figure out why.

Fast players aren't the devil
Just fast players who can’t hit and get on base and have no power are pretty useless to a team.
