The 2009 Wish List (No fantastical trade ideas contained herein....promise!)

Ok chico's and chica's...It ain't 2009 quite yet, but it's close and I have insomnia, so we get this little diary or fanpost or whatever a little early.

Now that football is mercifully ended, it is now time to focus on baseball 100%.  This got me thinking of what I would like to see in 2009 both on the farm and at the Major League level.  I know a lot of these wishes are based on a hope and a prayer, but wishes are wishes and I held mine to 10 apiece in order to not angerto the baseball Gods by being too greedy.

So...What are everyone else's baseball wishes for the new year?

My Wishes for 2009 for the ML roster (in no particular order)

1. Davis, Josh and Kinsler replicate (if not improve upon) last year's production

2. Hurley stays healthy and shows us what he is/can be (good or bad)

3. Madrigal owning the 7th inning role

4. CJ exorcising his demons and returns to his lefty dominance

5. Franky Frank assumes and owns the 2009 Closer spot

6. Jack Benny returning to his dominant 8th inning role.

7. Harrison giving us the same results as last year, minus some of the horrid outings and more of the solid-to-good outings

8. Nellie Cruz sticking in the line-up because of great production, not because of a last-ditch effort for him to live up to potential

9. A season of GOOD and smart Catcher utilization (no matter the combo)

10. Scooter Feldman showing us that 2008 was not a fluke.  We could all stand to be able to pencil in a reliable #4 starter for a few seasons.

My Wishes for 2009 for the Farm System (in no particular order)

1. Holland and Feliz each log at least 100 effective innings in OK City.  This makes early or Sept call-ups less of a gamble.

2. Michael Main stays healthy and effective for all of 2009.

3. Beavan getting consistent visits from his old friends 93 and 94 mph

4. Elvis developing his offense to prove to Goldstein that he will be a better than solid SS in the Major Leagues (even though a solid SS ain't a bad return).

5. Engel Beltre learns to take an effing BB.  Seriously, carnal, work on that shit!

6. Christian Santana nails down a spot in the field whether at C or OF.  This guy's bat needs to stay in the system SOMEwhere.

7. Matt West shows he can hit with or without PEDs.  I have high hopes for this kid....no pun intended...

8. Wilmer Font and Fabio Castillo have much better seasons than last year and show us why we like them so damned much.

9. The Kiker-Poveda-Phillips trio continue to improve and pronounce that they shall NOT be forgotten

10. Justin Smoak is a RoughRider by Juneteenth.

My Wishes for 2009 in the Media category

1. By popular demand, the DMN brings Evan Grant back to the Rangers Beat

2. Hindman continues his great work and gets more exposure, and maybe even some space on the actual print side of things (although, not sure if that would be considered a "win" in these days of declining print media demands)

3. The greatness that is the LSB/Newberg/BTIA/Lucas/Cole community continues to amaze us with their hard work and knowledge of the game

4. SOMEbody on the radio dial, whether 105.3's emergence or better Ranger play forcing the issue, actually talking Rangers baseball with some sort of consistency and insight.  That is a lot to ask for, so I'll take either or at this point.

5. The DMN axeing all comment capabilities from their blogs.  The decline in aneurysms would counteract any negative feedback from this.

And for some more MessageBoard wankery...My 2009 Best Moment (projection)

August 27th: Rangers @ NY Yankees.  Teixeira goes 0-4.  Two k's by Matt Harrison in the 1st and 4th innings.  In the 7th inning Tommy Hunter induces a weak pop-up to the shift to Elvis Andrus in short RF (Andrus is subbing in for an injured MY.  Andrus's play in the field and at the plate in OK City thus far is just too obvious to ignore).  In the 9th Tex comes up with 1 out and a runner on 1st and 3rd.  Neftali Feliz comes strolling out of the 'pen (he's filling in at Closer while Franky Frank nurses a little arm fatigue, since, y'know...saving 40 out of 45 games is a little taxing) to the music of Elvis Crespo and proceeds to throw two fastballs of 98 and 99 mph past a bewildered Teixeira. The third pitch is a perfect change-up which forces Tex to hit a slow dribbler out in front of the plate.  Salty pops up, picks the ball up cleanly, nails the runner at second and Andrus, with seemingly one motion, catches, jumps and fires to first, gunning Tex down by a few steps, prompting a few salty Yank fans to proclaim (in my best Bobby Digital voice) that "THAT'S a fuckin' jump throw, son!".

A little elaborate and probably a little too fantastical, but that is my projected Best Moment of 2009

Fair enough

I guess I just think of those three as a part of a trio since they all three had pretty good 2007 seasons at Clinton. It would be good to see if his numbers last year were solely due to the league or if he has indeed hit the wall. But fair is fair and I realize I might be reaching a little on Zach’s potential. I guess I just haven’t fully made the switch from Ranger fan 2006 to Ranger fan 2009 yet. Ranger fan 2006 had to hold onto the middlin’ prospects as bright shining stars and Ranger fan 2009 can see them as what they are…fair to middlin’

What's the rumpus?

Hmm...

1. Hamilton showing he can hit without Bradley behind him. He kind of fell off when Bradley was out.

2. We somehow land a reliable 2nd-lefty for the pen. I say somehow since it might be hard now as there’s a huge dropoff from the quality of FA LH’ed relievers that have signed already like Arthur Rhodes to the quality of FA LH’ed relievers that are left like Ray King and Kent Mercker. All we have behind Wilson is A.J. Murray and Gabbard which isn’t really confidence-instilling.

3. Nippert winning a rotation or long-relief spot. He’s out of options and we don’t want to lose that kind of arm.

4. Wilson and Benoit splitting 8th-inning opportunities depending on matchup, with both guys getting the odd save opportunity. I’d really like to see Wilson get his old confidence back.

5. One of our RH’ed hitters showing he’s capable of becoming a middle-of-the-order hitter. Since Kinsler and Young are probably penciled in at the 1-2 spots, that leaves Byrd and Cruz and eventually Maximus. It’d be nice if Byrd showed that 20-20 HR-SB combination he exhibited in the minors to go along with his ability to hit .300. It’d be even nicer if Ramirez tore up AAA, then came up and did the same up here. He’ll be everything we thought Botts would be hitting-wise.

6. We give Hurley a lot of leash. Even if Hurley doesn’t do that great next season, no reason to write him off. He’ll still only be 24 by season’s end and even if he’s no longer considered a top prospect, Padilla and Millwood could both be gone by ‘10 leaving a couple of rotation spots that will need to be filled for the ’10 season. Feldman aside, it’d be nice to show that we have another homegrown young guy other than Feliz and Holland who can capably fill a rotation spot.

Hamilton

I think the falloff was more due to fatigue and adjustment than lack of protection.

Maybe

but Hamilton hit like he was getting regular injections of espresso into his bum in Sept./Oct. Part of that at least was Bradley being back.

Or it could just be that you know

Playing throughout the entire AS Break, hitting 100 home runs in 10 minutes and all that, caused him to fatigue a bit in August

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I'd like to think so, too...

seeing as how there’s 0.01% Bradley will come back.

But my gut tells me Hamilton will not start or finish as well as last year, and that Bradley’s protection is a big part of that reason. Here’s to hoping Cruz keeps that fire lit all year…

I think protection is a myth

but I do think that Hamilton will be more consistent, but less spectacular next season.

Addressing yours...

1. I think that was more fatigue than anything else like t ball says.
2. I agree it would be nice and I believe that AJ Murray is that guy. If not we have 3 pretty good options coming up in Beau Jones, Tim Murphy (still think he would be an excellent bullpen arm), and Corey Young.
3. I agree on Nippert. Just keep pouring the strikes on.
4. There is NO WAY Benoit wasn’t injured last year. Something was wrong with his shoulder, hopefully rest helped him this winter.
5. I think Cruz is that guy.
6. Agree totally!!! Let Hurley make his 25-30 starts if healthy.

by Michael Cave on Dec 29, 2008 8:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not convinced that AJ murray

is going to pitch much longer and may not even be ready for spring training. He’s had 2-3 surgeries and was shut down last year. When JD discussed internal LH options, he mentioned Gabbard, who has had more surgeries than Murray, shut down last year, and by at least one account, cannot warm up fast enough to be a reliever, and Torres, a STI who has not pitched above AA. No mention of Murray at all. In addition, he has not shown sufficient control and he’s velo has dropped to below average due to his arm troubles. None of these guys is a reliable option and they have to sign Guardado or another veteran for that role.

by Goyogringo on Dec 29, 2008 8:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

possible lefty vets besides guardado

Beimel, Dennys Reyes, Ohman, Shouse, Seanez.

Also, I hope they sign Cordero (but not sure when he will be ready) in case Benoit continues to have arm woes. Other options for the 8th inning role: Juan cruz, Uehara, Lyon, Isringhausen, Hoffman (though I’m sure he reups with SD)

by Goyogringo on Dec 29, 2008 8:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Thought Ohman

had signed with someone already. Like his K:IP ratio.

Think Seanez is a righty.

Jones and Murphy and Young

are a little ways away though and we probably need immediate lefty help.

I think Benoit is a FA after the season so maybe he’ll really dial it up this year.

Go Cruz!

You are

right on Jones, Murphy, and Young. I just think by the time the team competes one of them will be (2010). But you are right we would need one for immediate help. There are some good pts made about Murray and Gabbard. Where is Mike Venafro when you need him? haha

by Michael Cave on Dec 29, 2008 9:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The board

seems to think its a slam dunk that Francisco is the closer next year with CJ as a situational lefty. Has that been confirmed anywhere or is it just board conjecture?

IMHO, CJ has the ability to be more than just a bullpen lefty. If he’s not in the discussion for closer, I sure would like to see them stretch him out this year and look at him as a starter.

by robert_d_wilfong on Dec 29, 2008 9:00 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

thought JD said

the closer situation would shake itself out in ST, but I could be wrong.

by Keynes on Dec 29, 2008 9:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

sorry - to continue...

with CJ’s injury and “mental state” concerns…and Frankie succeeding last year, Benoit’s shaky 2008 and the lack of a veteran reliever signing (Guardado, Cordero, etc.), it’s very logical to assume Frank will be given the reigns if all else holds true. I’d rather CJ close, I think he’s got more to offer in the end, but Frank hasn’t failed yet. CJ did, injuries or not.

CJ and Benoit as set-up men

and FX2 has the closer spot to lose. A poor showing from Francisco in ST (as in he shows a lack of control and/or the fastball isn’t there) gives CJ a chance to reclaim the closer spot.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

My wishlist

1. McCarthy gets healthy and finally proves his worth a bit (and so we can forget about John Danks already).

2. Kinsler doesn’t backslide. I don’t think you can do much better than his ‘08 season, but I hope he’ll be able to maintain something like a 120 OPS+.

Sorry, hit post a little soon there

3. Fx2 retains the majic from this year, and CJ and JB return to form (oh, and Madrigal too!). If that happens, our bullpen could be pretty beastly.

4. Hurley proves KoK wrong.

5. Salty shows all you mofo’s what he’s worth, and Tea gets shipped to FLA or Boston at the deadline for something like Buch or Josh Johnson.

It should not be shocking that I agree with ls Jon

about Ron Washington.

I can’t think of another manager starting the season on a hotter seat than Ron Washington.

Let’s say this thing breaks the gate 12-22 with a lot of the same dumb unwatchable baseball we were subject to in 2008 and attendance continues to lag. Do they fire him?

They haven’t given him an extension so I can’t believe they’re all that confident in his ability long-term but why would they keep him?.

you’d have to think they would fire him.

I think they would too...

but who would they replace him with if it was only a month or two into the season?

I don’t see any other guys on the current staff that they would even give an interm status to.

Do NOT eliminate commenting in the DMN blog. No no no. How many of those guys come here if that happens? If anything, Adam should petition to have the LSB link removed.

As for “forgetting” the Kiker-Poveda-Phillips trio (the first two, anyway), I think that’s partly a function of where they played. Bakersfield is a black hole. The local paper stopped covering the team after the first week, there’s no radio broadcasts (except on internet), and promotion/coverage by the team itself is non-existent. Quite literally, I was the team’s “beat writer.” The team asked me to design a logo for their site that linked to the Newberg Report, and it was up nearly the entire season. They could play at the American Legion field in Lancaster, SC (pop. 12,000) in 2010 and it would be an improvement.

Feldman deserves a medal for what he did last year, but he just wasn’t that good.

Hmm

I didn’t think about that particular angle regarding the DMN blog Comments section. And yeah I agree with you now…keep ’em up and active.

Agreed on the Bakersfield black hole designation. Everything but the guys who p[lay there are depressing as hell.

Feldman was lucky to get some Wins last year and his numbers weren’t sterling, I think that was obvious to see. However, do you think what we saw last year was him punching way above his weight and he’ll be nothing more or do you think he could turn into a solid #4/5 SP? I mean he is just now learning the position, he’s still young and he’s got some great movement on his pitches. His ability to miss bats in’t quite there and this year might show him as what he really is…Kam Loe, Part II…but I’m not giving up on him just yet.

And by the way, i like the sig. That couple is a train wreck, plain and simple
