Dunn for Manny?
i might be wrong but I don't think anyone is going to be confuse Adam Dunn for Manny Ramirez? On another note, what if the Rangers took a shot at Manny for 3 years at 45 million? Can you imagine what kind of numbers he would put up in Arlington?
Apparently, the Dodgers aren't going to sit around all winter, waiting for Manny Ramirez to beg to come back. They now have Adam Dunn on their shopping list.
Dunn
The Dodgers contacted Dunn's agent, Greg Genske, over the holidays, according to an executive of a team interested in Dunn. And that creates an intriguing option for both parties.
Dunn has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Nationals, Mariners and Orioles. But adding the Dodgers to that mix gives him another contender to consider. The Cubs had believed to be his top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, need to infuse power into a lineup that finished 14th in the National League in home runs last season. And with no certainty that they can re-sign Ramirez, they seem to have decided that Dunn represents their best alternative.
Dunn has hit exactly 40 home runs four years in a row -- which would be four more 40-homer seasons than all Dodgers hitters combined have had in those four seasons. No Dodger has reached 40 home runs since Adrian Beltre in 2004.
After batting just .215, with only two homers, at Dodger Stadium in his first six seasons, Dunn has had much better success over the last two years, batting .389 (7 for 18) in L.A., with two home runs and an .833 slugging percentage, in 2007-08.
Dunn also would require no draft-pick compensation because his former team, Arizona, didn't offer him arbitration.

Why is this a fanpost?

Because he really wanted to make the point that 20 designated hitters on one team are not enough... we need Manny.
After all, we had such a hard time scoring runs last year…

Half of each
I agree that this fanpost could be a little better organized (the obviously copied content should be quoted and sourced, for instance), but I can’t imagine what would compel someone who just posted a poll on who should be the coach of the Cowboys on a Rangers blog to complain about anyone else’s posting.
No this isn't just a Rangers blog
It is a community of sports fans and while we all love the Rangers most of us love the Cowboys too (the playoff game thread had 550 comments). So the fanpost I created makes sense on this blog, especially considering how many people voted in the poll.
As for this particular fanpost, I don’t have a problem with it…I was just still pissed about the Cowboys and clearly misdirected that anger.

really?
what is confusing? Did you read the story? The Dodgers are giving up on signing Manny and now looking to sign Dunn. Thus a swap in players? Makes sense to me!
Manny
3/45 isn’t going to get it done for Manny. Try three years, 60-65 million.

Manny
This offseason couldn’t have played out any worse for him. The Dodgers took their 2yr/45mil offer off the table after Boras reportedly didn’t even respond to it, now I think Manny will have to settle for less than that. The Dodgers and the Nationals are the only potential suitors, and who knows how serious the Nats really are.

Boras is losing his touch
or maybe Boras just forgot that his clients aren’t the 28-30 year old studs they once were.

Yup.
And I wouldn’t want Manny on the cheap, either.
He’d feel unappreciated and get it in his head the team was slighting him by only paying what he agreed to in his contract as opposed to what he feels he’s really worth.
A pouting Manny is not a god thing.

i am a californian originally
moved to Dallas when I was six years old. Roger Staubach lived a couple of blocks from our home in Richardson. Dallas Mavericks came on the scene in 1979 and I was an instant fan. As for the Rangers, I was probably 8 (1978) years old when I went to the old ballpark. We played the Boston Red Sox and lost. Both Yastremski and Rice homered in the 9th to beat us! I had a friend of my parents who graduated from USC. When I moved back to Los Angeles he took me to every home game for about 15 years.

Dunn and Manny being Manny
are two interesting players who have a bunch of similarities.
Excluding hair of course. Both have excellent plate discipline skills
with power. Big contracts too. Poor defensive skills leads you
to believe that each will spend the majority of the rest of their
careers as a DH. Which would you rather have on your team,
assuming that you needed one?

Manny is not that bad defensively
I’m not an expert in defensive stats, but this shows him right in the middle of the pack.
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=lf&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2008&month=0
Also, I watched him quite a bit in 2007, and his defense seemed pretty good (he led either the AL or MLB in assists halfway through the season). This is just one of those rumors that people attach themselves to. Is he “good”? No. But he’s not a butcher either.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
Before anyone says anything
I went back a bit further, and it does appear that he’s been a butcher in some seasons.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
Honestly
If the A-Rod for Manny deal had gone down, and he’d been a butcher in the field for the Rangers, I wouldn’t have cared that much. Sure, there would have been a lot of people bitching (assuming LSB existed) like there is for Ian, but the difference is he’s our butcher.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
I would've enjoyed Manny
because most people hate sports players for being assholes or prima donnas, not for performing the baseball equivalent of drunken boxing.
I sure would’ve enjoyed watching about 200 home runs go over the fence with Manny playing here every night, too.
The one thing Manny did good
was working with the Green Monster in Boston. He still wasn’t an expert there, but he was pretty good with that from what I saw. Other than that though, he’s been a butcher in the OF and a lot of that had to do with him being lazy and not paying attention.

Here's a great piece on Dunn
I can’t believe he said this (link below for more stuff):
Caller: People here don’t realize that Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn don’t get paid $12 million to hit .300. They get paid to hit home runs; that’s it.
Marty: No, they get paid to drive in runs, is what they get paid to do.
Caller: And hit home runs.
Marty: No, unh-uh. Home runs are incidental. It’s run production that they are going to get paid for. Adam Dunn hits 40 home runs and barely reaches a hundred RBI’s.
Caller: But, if you’re going to talk about potential run production, look at his on-base.
Marty: (angrily) I don’t care about—I don’t care about his on-base! I get so blasted tired hearing some people talk to me about Adam Dunn’s on-base percentage. Adam Dunn ain’t paid to walk. Adam Dunn’s paid to hit home runs and drive in runs for God’s sake, and they can take off, uh, they can take off the walks, and you’re out of here! (hangs up)
. . .
Marty: We are heading toward a break. Don’t call and talk to me about Adam Dunn’s on-base percentage—
Thom: You sure?
Marty: —because it pushes my hot button.
Thom: I would have never known.
Marty: I’m tired of hearing about how many times he walks. He was paid to hit home runs, paid to drive in runs. He homers; he doesn’t drive in runs.
Thom: You know, you’re too old to get worked up like this.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/shysterball/article/marty-brennaman-is-a-disgrace/
Please read the rest of this article. How someone like Marty Brennaman could hate a player for his home team so much is absurd (and ridiculous since Dunn is a pretty damn good player). I miss FJM.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
I can't help but comment on my own comment
Homeruns are “incidental”? So they’re “unplanned” from something else? How about incidental to his OBP? Oh, never mind, you don’t care about OBP. Although HRs are probably incidental to his OBP. But you don’t care about either, apparently.
Where’s Juan Pierre when you need him?? I…Need…Slap…Hitters!!

Manny talk
Would the Rays, Marlins or Twins really pony up $20M for Manny?
I don’t think Manny will go the way of Barry Bonds. I still believe he can help the Marlins, and possibly the Rays as well. With his home in Florida and his price dropping, don’t be surprised to see him in the uniform of one of the Florida teams.
I also would not rule out the Cardinals. Yes, they have other options in the outfield, but imagine Manny and Pujols back-to-back. That would be a lot of offense in the middle of that lineup.
I’d just love to see the Twins dump a short term ton of money on Manny as well. They didn’t play Santana his $20 million a year, and since they were willing to go that high on Santana, they likely have the money. Why not spend it on Manny and add one more bat to the Mauer/Morneau combination?

Manny
The Twins would be the least likely spot for Manny in all of baseball. That’s not how they operate.
by Randy Richardson on Dec 29, 2008 8:50 PM CST up reply actions
It would be a great move for them
They have the money and that division is still pretty much up for grabs next year. An offensive beast like Manny to DH for them would actually give that team a chance to be more than just a contender for the playoffs.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Plus they just opened a new ballpark
Don’t know how its supposed to play but if its a RH batters dream I could see them trying to pony up to help draw even more fans
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
No
They’re going to open a new ballpark (2010). Same point though – try and get season tix holders now for the new one. Hell – their website is advertising that. Get tenure now for tix at the new field.
