Adair update

Mike Hindman says that Rick Adair is not, as has been speculated, being considered for the M's bullpen coach job, but is instead talking to them about the pitching coach job.

Adair says a decision is expected in the next 48 hours.

not sure where else to put this

but from mlbtr:

11:18am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox signed second baseman Dustin Pedroia to a six-year deal worth about $40.5MM. ESPN’s Peter Gammons was right on this scoop as well. The deal buys out two years of free agency and also has a club option for 2015.

Rosenthal cites the deals signed by Hanley Ramirez, David Wright, and Ryan Braun as comparables. Pedroia’s deal covers one pre-arbitration season, all three arb seasons, and two years of free agency. Ramirez received $54.4MM for the same slice of his career, Wright got $55MM, and Braun received $43.8MM. Also, Brian McCann gets $37.8MM, Grady Sizemore gets $30.95MM, Evan Longoria is at $31.95MM, Robinson Cano gets $42.49MM, and Chase Utley gets $55.5MM. That assumes options are exercised, where applicable.

which names do not belong?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I don't get it

All of those guys are excellent young players who have signed pretty big pre-arb extensions. They all belong.

Not really a strong year for him last year

also
According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, the Giants “believe they are closing in on signing shortstop Edgar Renteria.” Brown also says the Giants have discussed trading Jonathan Sanchez to the Marlins for Jorge Cantu. That’d be a steal for the Marlins, who plucked Cantu off the scrap heap in January for a half-million bucks.

sanchez for jorge cantu? wow.

Too bad Blalock isn't a 3B anymore

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

i drafted a fanpost on this

but deleted it when i saw this mention, and now another fanpost has taken its place. if there is any truth to this, and I doubt that very seriously, then the Rangers have to have an offer built around Blalock on the table. Cantu is a horrible defensive 3B with a weak OBP. There is a very good chance Blalock outproduces him this year and Cantu is only locked in for one year beyond Blalock. I am sure the Rangers could find a way to make up the difference. Perhaps Lemon? I had mentioned a Blalock, Lemon, and Harrison package earlier this offseason and Zywica (and others) shot it down, saying Sanchez would cost more.

Perhaps not.

Lemongello traded?!?!?!

Dirk A. Tron would surely lose his mind over that. Quite a shame, he’s such a good boy.

also of interest
Rosenthal believes Ben Sheets and Jason Varitek will accept their offers of arbitration. He also wonders if Orlando Cabrera could accept.

Sheets

that is remarkable. and also the wrong move
