what!?!?!?!?!
According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Giants "believe they are closing in on signing shortstop Edgar Renteria." Brown also says the Giants have discussed trading Jonathan Sanchez to the Marlins for Jorge Cantu. That'd be a steal for the Marlins, who plucked Cantu off the scrap heap in January for a half-million bucks.
That better not be true. If I were JD, I would immediately get on the phone and offer all of our spare parts for Sanchez. If the Giants trade Sanchez for just Cantu there should be an investigation.

Ummmm
Not that they’re always wrong, but I don’t put a lot of stock into what Yahoo Sports puts out there.
Nevertheless, JD does need to check it out, if he hasn’t already.

Hmmm
Cantu is a perfectly fine player. He posted a .354 wOBA and he was 14.4 batting runs above average, and he is 26.
But that would be a steal for Florida. In 2008, Cantu was about the offensive equivalent of a Marlon Byrd (.383 wOBA, 15.9 bRAA) or Ramon Vazquez (.353 wOBA). Sure Cantu is under team control for two years, but even so, that is a pretty crappy return for a left-handed starter with top of the rotation potential.
I can’t imagine that deal would actually happen and I’m sure JD has asked about Sanchez already.

But if I remember right he's a butcher in the field.

Cantu is inconsistent w/ the bat and a butcher in the field
but better than any option we have at 3b, so if the Giants are dead set on filling that need, we are out of the running.
I sure would love to get Sanchez. My idea was to trade Salty for Bowden +, then flip Bowden and Blalock to SF for Sanchez. They get a highly regarded pitching prospect ready to step in Sanchez’ rotation spot, plus a cleanup hitter for their anemic lineup.
Don't believe the hype about sloppy seconds. They ain't bad.

Yah, the defense is the key.
Cantu is a third baseman in name only and his numbers look a good deal less impressive as a 1b.
And I haven’t even gotten to the fact that I don’t trust him year-to-year, a sentimony it looks like we share.

is he worse on defense than davis?

Don't believe it...
Sabean can’t be THAT stupid. He should take Laird to keep the plate warm for Posey, Arias for a cheaper option at SS, Blalock for 1st base and Murphy for his doubles to the gap. PLUS Padilla or Millwood for the rotation and Mendoza for the bullpen.
Sanchez and what else for that bag of beans. :-)

Yes this would be bullshit
Sanchez should be ours at this price…although I find it hard to believe he is this cheap.

I know this is the offseason...
but for the love of sweet baby jeter can we stop the “if that’s true then JD better get on the phone” bullshit…
Guess what? He already did. And I’m pretty sure the Giants will come back calling if in fact they like something the Rangers have and don’t mind trading Sanchez.

Interesting Tigers angle.
Because they have interest in Laird and they have been trying to trade for Jack Wilson… shouldn’t the Rangers include Arias with Laird to get a better return in the deal?
I would imagine the Tigers would jump at the chance to pay minmum salary for Arias instead of over $7 million for Wilson.
Slimshady, if JD DID call the Giants and refused to part with Travis Metcalf for Sanchez, wouldn’t you be upset? I sure would.

Upset isn't the word...I'd be stupefied if
JD said “you know what, you can keep your really really talented underrated pitcher…I’m keeping my shitty AAA third baseman”…and why does that seem like even a plausible scenario? Explain the significance of Travis Metcalf in any conversation here.
I LOL when people read into misinformed columnists more then their worthless dribble even intended…while assuming that this “inside” information hasn’t reached the GM’s office.

Come on now
Do you really believe we wouldn’t part with Travis-freaking-Metcalf for a guy like Sanchez? Its more like SF has no interest in Metcalf. They probably think like we do and don’t view Blalock as a 3B anymore so we obviously don’t match up. Trading isn’t a one way street. You can’t force teams to take what you offer. If they don’t want what you’ve got then you aren’t gonna make a deal. Like all these teams with either young catchers already or who just drafted a catcher in the first round. Theres no reason they would want to give up a proven major leaguer for a young catcher when they just drafted one they believe will make an relative immediate impact.

Cards fan here...
…there’s been a lot of speculation about the Cards trading Ryan Ludwick to Atlanta for Kelly Johnson. Given that the Rangers have Joaquin Arias knocking on the MI door, do you think the they would have interest in a deal featuring Ludwick and Kinsler?

Not really
We’re loaded with OF’ers this season, e.g. Murphy, Hamilton, Cruz, Byrd, and a nice prospect in Borbon who’ll come up later on in the season plus Greg Golson possibly in the picture. Ludwick would be redundant.
Plus Kinsler is young, has a lot of tools and potential and still improving, and is signed to a very reasonable contract for the next 4 years. Not the kind of player you deal for what could be a one-year wonder in Ludwick.

already have the 2009 Ludwick
his name is Nelson Cruz.
But seriously, this team finally has some OF depth, the real need is pitching, and for a player the caliber of Kinsler, we would probably ask for Wainwright.

i guess i am overvaluing Wainwright. He seems like the sort of pitcher who could sport an ERA in the 3s for the remainder of his very affordable deal (which runs through 2012 or 2013, I believe). I take it there are very few players you would trade Kinsler for, huh?

Few, yes.
And Wainwright is overrated due to the NL and the Cards defense.
You’ve gotta figure the switch from having Izturis as your SS yo having Michael Young is worth at least one extra earned run a game just by itself.
He’s a 4.25-4.75 ERA guy here in the AL with our ballpark and defense. Maybe a 4.0-.4.5, but, still. Kinsler’s worth a heckuva lot more than that even if he regresses a little next year.
