Tuesday a.m. things
Well, the minor league coaching staff was named yesterday, and we have stories from Richard Durrett and T.R. Sullivan.
Durrett also has a brief Q&A with Steve Buechele up, about become the Bakersfield manager.
That's about it.

seems to forget what Tampa did last year. Building from within is a much better strategy than just signing a bunch of aging free agents, and of course they’ll need to sign and trade for some pieces to fill out the picture. Other than that it’s a nice article, and he does a good job in the first paragraph of saying where the team is right now on the contention curve.

A question for the DMN newsletter?
Maybe we should ask Evan — if he still has his weekly/monthly (in offseason) Rangers newsletter. (DMN sucks — glad they can devote so many resources to the ’Boys!!)
On the DMN website
check out the Most Read, Most Commented, Most Emailed, etc. area and tell me why they shouldn’t have lots of Cowboys coverage.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Both deserve coverage...
Not arguing that the Cowboys don’t deserve coverage, but the DMN seems to be forgetting that the Rangers are a Major League Baseball team — a newspaper of its size should be providing its own coverage, not outsourcing that to the competitor from down the highway …
Well, it hasn't helped our perception
that this has been an especially slow offseason. If the Rangers pull of a big trade or sign someone like Sheets it will be covered prominently.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Sure, but ...
A little more coverage by the DMN might give us a bit more perspective on what EXACTLY is brewing at corporate office in RBiA … But you’re right we’ll know all this by the time the players report in mid-Feb…
Well now that it was leaked that Buchholz is indeed
on the market, JD shouldn’t settle for anything less.

Dunno
The Marlins were said to be most interested in a center fielder, and discussions apparently centered on Boston’s promising youngster Jacoby Ellsbury, talented pitching prospect Clay Buchholz and others in a package for Ramirez, who began in Boston’s organization.
So Buchholz, Ellsbury and Masterson?

For Hanley Ramirez?
How do you think JE/CB/LA compares to the five Texas got for Teixeira and Mahay?

Ramirez’s reasonable contract with him under control until 2014. He should get a return greater than the package TX got for Tex.

I guess it would..
Just seems so steep, I think those 3 would have to be considered a better package than what we got.. Obviously Feliz and Andrus have taken pretty big steps foward over the last year, making that package look so incredible now.

That's sorta my point.
Everyone agrees Texas made out huge for Teixeira. And there’s no question Hanley has more value than Tex.
by Jamey Newberg on Dec 30, 2008 2:08 PM CST up reply actions
those guys
collectively blow the Teixeira package (at that time) out of the water.
Feliz, the prize in the deal, had just a few stateside innings at the time and had battled control problems. He was certainly no Clay Buchholz. Feliz and Harrison combined did not have nearly the value of Buccholz. Salty could compare with Ellsbury, a solid up the middle position player prospect with a solid but not great debut. And Lars Anderson is a top 20 prospect right now, and is certainly more valuable than Andrus was at the time of the trade, when he was hitting in the .230s at Myrtle Beach. At the time, it seems like people had him pegged as a defensive specialist with a questionable bat, and many people said his prospect status was tied mostly to his age. Beau Jones is in there, but so is Mahay, so we’ll let them cancel out, but in reality Mahay was worth more than Jones.
That was a long winded way of saying JE/CB/LA, three ML ready or near ready prospects of which two are probably primed for above average (and potentially all-star) careers and the third (Ellsbury) should be a solid ML starter for the next 10-12 years.
The subsequent rise of Andrus and Feliz upon entering our system has skewed history in some people’s eyes.
Exactly
Its all about timing. Feliz and Andrus are arguably the two prizes in the Teixeira deal for us. In another year or two who knows they could be comparable to Anderson and Bucholz right now. But right now they aren’t because neither will see the big leagues before September at the earliest. Basically if we had to trade Teixeira right now do you think we could get the exact same package that we got from Atlanta? I highly doubt it
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If I'm Florida
I don’t know if I even make that deal.
Hanley Ramirez is one of the best young players in the game. His trade value, considering his contract situation, is probably higher than anyone in baseball’s right now. Ellsbury is an okay player, but not someone to build a trade around. Basically they’d be betting that either Buchholz or Anderson would get to approach Ramirez’s value. Since neither of them is a Longoria or Price level prospect, it a less than 50% chance that either will approach Ramirez’s value. No way I make that deal.
The only way Florida should trade Hanley Ramirez – a guy who’ll be an MVP candidate for years to come – is if they get back Pedroia or Youklis, plus Buchholz and an Ellsbury type player.
I see the way it is....
We will give Texas trash, but if Florida comes calling….
Granted Salty is no where in the same league as Hanley Ramirez
so much for Boston being in love with Bucholz and that he is untouchable….load of b.s. from Gammons.

Untouchable
I think it’s a loose term, I mean we may hear that feliz is untouchable but if someone came along and dangled a player like ramierez he probably wouldn’t be so untouchable.

I thought the Rangers were moving their Class A affiliation to North Carolina or something
Is that for 2010 then? That would be good for me since I’m within driving distance of Bakersfield and thus I could go catch a game or two this summer.

From Neyer's Chat Today...
George (NJ): I know the Sox checked in on Hanley and were turned down (nice try though) but what ever came of their discussions with Texas for Michael Young? Could the Sox land Young and Salty or Teagarden for a package that does not include Ellsbury and Bucholz? Would such a move put them back above the Yankees & Rays in the AL East?
Rob Neyer: There are two h’s in Buchholz. Just want to mention that first. As for Young, I’m not convinced he’ll be any better than Jed Lowrie in two or three years.
Ouch.
Help me someone?

whoops, accidentally posted way too early
That is what I was saying in one of these posts a little while ago. The Angels are a much weaker team than last year with the loss of Tex and K-Rod and they weren’t too good to begin with. With the Rangers young and inexperienced squad, a breakout year from one of our pitchers could end up being the difference maker in the Rangers favor.
And if we got Sheets and Hoffman, things would look a ton better for the Rangers.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Do you think that those two pitchers would make us better than them?
Assuming they only add Fuentes and a league average starter to their roster.
by coolrangersfan on Dec 30, 2008 6:36 PM CST up reply actions
I could see it happening
The offense is still just as good as last years. The defense improves through getting rid of the 3B we had playing for us last year, Davis at 1st, and Kinsler playing a bit better. That’s still not a great defense, but its not going to be as pitiful as last year. Then the pitching just depends on some health issues. How bad is Sheets’ back? CJ and Hurley should be healthy and Millwood/Padilla are a bit more motivated this year. All in all, they just can’t be any worse than last year and with a defense that is at least slightly more competent and a better bullpen, it should be better.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Is it too much to ask for
Sheets, Buchholz, Hoffman, and Crede all in one offseason? It is unlikely, but possible if what I read about Nolan’s willingness to improve the 2009 club is true.
