OT: Cowboys coaches
Jerry Jones completely missed the boat when it came to retaining coaches that Parcells brought in. Jerry brought in Parcells, b/c he was a 'football guy' and a great talent evaluator-- for both players and coaches. Jerry needs another 'football guy' in the mold of a Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Parcells.
Jason Garrett was granted permission to talk to the Lions about their head coaching opportunity, and an ESPN report mentions Cowher interested in talking to the Jets. How does Jerry not let Jason walk, fire Wade, and give the reins to Cowher?
The window is now for this group of players, if Jerry screws this up, we are looking at another 10 years of misery.

there is no Rangers news. If you don’t want to talk Cowboys, don’t click on the fanpost. Are you that much of a tool?

Don't get your panties in an uproar
There’s nothing in this fan post that couldn’t be limited to a comment in your thread. There’s nothing wrong with some OT discussion this time of year, but turning the fan posts section into a Cowboys board is rather obnoxious. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this either. Maybe you could write us a sequel to one of your classic Fan Posts about laundry or Swayze? Tool.

Did you even read what I said? I said there was nothing wrong with some OT talk, but considering there’s already a Cowboys thread this seemed redundant. I’m pretty sure you started the name calling first, and it’s not my fault if your reading comprehension skills are so low you can’t tell I was being facetious. The panties line is from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you should check it out. If you’re trying to get my blood boiling you’re going to have to come up with something more original than a “Your Mom” comment. Tool.

Jerry would have to agree to loosen the reins
The crux of my point is that this is a key time for Jerry.. if he doesn’t realize he needs to take a step back now, we are looking at the Campo era all over again. The ship was righted when Parcells came in, cleaned up the coaching staff and fixed the draft.
Jerry is setting himself up to be the next Al Davis.

We are looking at some form of Jerry related misery
until he is incapacitated. It’s kind of morbid to talk about, but the earliest that the Cowboys have a hope of being properly run is when he is sick or dead. And then there is certainly no telling what his boys will do.

Funny thing about the Parcells deal.
When you work with companies you usually sign a non-compete waiver.
I am sure that Parcells would not do this with Jerry.
The problem I have with that is that Jerry should never bring in ANY coach who doesnt do exactly what the team wants. Parcells is looking more and more like a genius everyday! Now that Wayne Huiezenga is about to sell the Dolphins Parcells has an out clause in his contract. So he gets to walk and the new ownership still owes him 12mil. Awesome!
Parcells is essentially a hired gun. What 5 teams in about 10 years! A lot of sucess but dont get to comfortable with him if he is in your town.

i hear you on the qb.. but i thought Phil Simms was a good qb not a great qb. Parcells hasnt won since right? The jury is still out on Romo? I do think that Parcells is the best at getting talent out of castaway players!

by mrichardson70 on Dec 30, 2008 1:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, a great defense and a good qb can get it done.
Roy Williams is good enough. He’s not great, but he’s good enough to where we can cut T.O. and survive.. Between Roy, Felix, Martellus, and Witten we would still have a ton of talent in the passing game. Im not counting on T.O. being gone though.

he said “romo cannot afford to secon guess himself”.
I looked at the body language during and after the last few games.
To me (my opinion) the relationship between Witten and Owens looked strained. I think that could possibly be because Witten has never had any negativity linked to him in his professional career. What I saw between Romo and Owens was professionalism. I think that Cowboys are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

I agree
Look at the past teams Owens has been on, each time the locker room was divided with players taking sides. He’s been vocal about getting more throws and caused a rift with his QB.
Irvin was on an interview a few weeks back (During the Witten/Owens incident) and said “If you’re a receiver and the ball is 30 yards overthrown you’re telling the QB ‘Sorry, my fault. I should have remembered your arm is that good’, if the ball is thrown at you feet then tell him ‘My fault. I should have been at that spot’”. His point was that you never give your QB a reason to have doubt when he goes to throw.
Irvin also noted that he never complained about Aikman and wasn’t sure why Owens was publicly willing to question Romo’s decision-making.

Seems like the “no turnovers” scenario would have the Eagles scoring 27.

The Cowboys offense had 4 TOs
an interception and 3 fumbles. Philly scored a TD and a FG on the drives following those. PacMan fumbled one that gave up 3 points, but I don’t see 17 points as directly related.

they’re the kind of boring team pundits are always talking those stupod boring cliches “doesnt’ beat themselves”. Yeah cus those team always suck.
It’s funny, it was being discussed that it was surprising to see Indy favored only 1 at SD. Well, if it was Indy at Miami, they’d be favored by about 20. I bet.
They have Carolina’s old OC, Henning I thin’s his name. He was decent to good in Carolina, I’m sure he has a good DC now too, but he’s pretty old IIRC. I wouldn’t expect that much out of Miami in the future.

Holy crap!!! i agree with sharky!!
Miami sucks, the NFL is all about lack of schedule balance. with the salary cap and the weighted schedules, the league basically selects the teams most likely to make playoffs before the season ever starts.
the league is set up for any team no matter what to be 8-8:
cap: 8-8
schedule weight: +- 1 or 2 wins
a good/bad coach +- 2 wins
a good/bad qb +- 2 or 3 wins
its why Miami isnt any real surprise and detriot losing 16 is unthinkable.

Sigh
Really tired of this Parcells crap.
Funny, you all hated him when he was here, and the team was pretty damn mediocre. Stop with the revisionist history.
As I wrote in another post, the amount of credit Parcells is getting for Miami’s turnaround is ludicrous. As I understand it he doesnt even have much to do with the team.
How many players did he draft and bring in in Miami to turn it around in ONE YEAR? Give me a break. Especially considering I doubt he even had much input into ANYTHING with the Dolphins this year (a nice little fact the media will ignore)
But let me tell you what did change..the coaches, and both coordinators, as ALWAYS happens in these turnarounds from 4-12 to 11-5 in one season, such as also Atlanta this year.
If it was talent, why do you NEVER see such turnarounds with the same coaching staff both years?
That is indisputable proof, talent means nothing and it’s all about the coordinators, GET REAL if you think otherwise.

Now on to Dallas..
I think Jerry made the right move keeping Wade+Garrett (assuming Garrett stays).
They deserve another year. If they fail then, fine, fire them. I could write a lot more on this, but that sums it up.
You know I was thinking, just TWO weeks ago (after the string of wins over patsies, near win over Pitt, and Giants win), media and the people like Bill Simmons were calling us “the team nobody wants to face in the playoffs”.
It’s doubtful we turned into the worst team in football in two weeks. Just keep it in mind.
If I blame Wade for on thing, it’s his slow reaction to Brad J’s terrible play..but then again even that could probably be rationalized.
The guy who really needs to be fired is Brian Stewart, regardless how much he’s allowed to touch the defense anymore it scares me to even have him around. And isn’t it funny that like the awful Rangers 4A player that nobody demands to be traded, HES the one with impeccable job security and no fan backlash. Very poor job on the DFW fans/media.

Why is Jerry not a good GM?
It is funny how Jerry gets ZERO credit for being a football guy. He played college football, he has 3 super bowl rings, he has been in the NFL for 20 years, and I doubt there is another GM in the league that has a better understanding of the cap. I guess all the other NFL gm’s were born to be gm’s. If not how did they get experience? Also I guess every team that does not win the super bowl every year should fire their gm, since he did not get his ultimate goal accomplished. There should be 31 gm’s out of work every year. Or let’s take it down to a smaller less sarcastic example. The Giants are the only returning team in the playoffs out of the NFC this year. So that means every team that did not make it had a playoff team last year and under achieved. I hat eht eargument that Jerry is not a good GM just because he does not do it like everyone else. To that I say thank you JERRY.
by Ranger Capt on Dec 30, 2008 1:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Two quick corrections/comments
1) Jerry got all 3 of those rings with the team that he & JJ built. It is debatable how much credit he deserves for that building job, but it ISN’T debatable that he hasn’t been back to the SB, nor even close to it, since JJ left.
2) Everything I have read/heard says that Steven is the cap wizard, not Jerry.

It's a heart and leadership problem...
That is what it is. Wade doesn’t suck, but we’d like him more if he was ripping ass after every bad game. Why do we like folks like Cowher, Parcells, Jimmy, etc.? Because they seem intense and serious about what they do. They have no problem showing their ass/emotions and playing to the fans emotions. They keep the image that they are on the same page with the fans, but it is image.
Remember Jimmy cutting the RB who fumbled the ball during one game, at a critical point. Now, the guy wasn’t the future of the franchise, but the cut played to the upset fans emotions AND sent a message that he wouldn’t be tolerant of mistakes. Cute idea, but not exactly an impressive move. Remember Parcells calling Terry Glenn “she”? That could be used as a motivational tool, but doing that it public was Parcells playing to the fans, and showing that he was pissed Glenn wasn’t playing through his injury and/or playing soft. Not horrible, but a poor way to address a players situation out in the media. Bill always left himself an out, so that he could always be considered “his own man dealing with the stupid decisions of others, but making it better than anybody else could under the circumstances” type of coach. By his silence on some topics, everybody believed he didn’t say anything because he didn’t agree with decisions. Honestly, his silence bought him some favor with the fandom, because they assumed he was making the best of a bad situation. Cowher played to the fans with his intensity on the sidelines and during press conferences. It didn’t result in his team playing better.
Back on topic a bit. What is Big Bill’s legacy with Dallas? Nothing, except keeping Romo on the roster during those years AND changing the defense to the 3-4. He alienated his players, and if you are in fact one of those who succumbs to revisionist history, then please don’t go back to all the player quotes after his departure. I don’t believe any one of them felt they would miss him or be worse off, with the exception of Witten, who never said anything truly negative about Bill, but often alluded to it.
When I say it’s a heart and leadership problem, it’s is not to be cliche’, and it isn’t necessarily aimed at the coaches, even if some of them aren’t as effective as they could/should be. I look at the team, the players.
Anybody who heard or saw Romo’s interview after the game, should never have to ask if Romo has the verbal leadership skills to inspire his team. HE DOESN’T. He may be able to inspire his teammates with his play, but his arrogant attitude after the Philly game does not inspire anybody to want to follow this guy’s lead. He is not Brett Favre, and using Brett Favre as a comparison/excuse for his turnover ability will not cut it. Favre’s teammates never doubted that he was in it to win it. Remember, Favre turned no-named receivers into studs. We have Romo turning extremely talented receivers into after-thoughts.
I like Romo, and think he has the potential to be great, but he isn’t inspiring his teammates. If a crappy season wasn’t enough, his answers after the Philly game do not make it sound like he is “in it to win it”, and will create doubt in his attitude as much as the ridiculous timing of his turnovers create doubt in his ability.
Owens is a guy I’ve hated forever. Owens is also a guy who needs to keep his mouth shut at times, but not all the time. The thing about Owens is that if you can see through his selfishness in his comments, you can understand he is competitive and wants to win. Losing doesn’t sit well with him (either does not getting respect or passes lol). I’ll take Owens heart over that of Romo. Romo has talent and likes to compete, but is he doing everything he can to prepare to compete? He took a step or two back in his superhero status this year, but if he can dedicate himself again, all the other pieces can fall into place.
I regards to Wade and whether his team is fired up/motivated/cared, etc, I don’t think he has a problem with the players coming to play, except for one of the two players who touch the ball on every offensive snap. And I’m talking about the one Parcells left behind as his legacy in Dallas.
I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.

I think Shanahan is one of those guys who constantly runs a good offensive system (like Gruden, Reid), so his teams are always decent to good, however he seemed stuck in a 8-8 9-7 rut for a long time..not sure I’d be all that excited over him..
Course 9-7, 10-6 seems a lot more succesful when you’re on national TV every week like Dallas instead of forgotten in Denver though..

Looking up a little more on Shanahan..
He has won two SB’s in 14 years there, so I guess it’s hard to accuse him of topping out..then again, it says he has one playoff win since Elway retired in 99.
It’s not surprising Denver’s problems get back to defense, I’m sure Shanahans offense was solid
The Broncos’ defense gave up 448 points, third worst in the NFL, including 112 during the three-game collapse at the end. It was ranked 29th in yards allowed and tied for last in the NFL with a minus-17 turnover margin.
In years past, Shanahan had relieved defensive coordinators – Greg Robinson, Ray Rhodes, Larry Coyer and Jim Bates – in almost revolving-door fashion.

As far as a Garrett criticism though..
When you saw guys running free at Romo, and it was interesting he addressed this post game, thats scheme. Thats on Garrett. NOTHING to do with the offensive line play (or at least, relatively little during an entire game).
So yeah, that was a big red flag I noticed early in the game. You all hate Garrett now, but I dont think any of you picked up on that, something he should actually be rightfully blamed for.
If you want to look at a few things that show a good OC, look at lots of recievers coming free OVER THE MIDDLE with crossing patterns (Garett excels here for the most part) (poor OC’s will nibble at the outside of the field). Look at a solid running game and good situational calls (Garrett er, could use some work here 3rd and 1 passing, 2nd and 1 run every time, ugh), and look for good QB PROTECTION (been inconsistent I guess).
If you see no QB protection, the OC isnt doing his job, period..
I see signs the league may be catching up to Garrett, he was awful in the Philly game, he hasnt sprung our talented receivers this year bottom line..but he’s also done a lot of good work and deserves another year imo..
