Local Talent?
I started thinking of baseball players who grew up in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. So who is the best local player to make it big in the Majors?
I am looking at the signing of Kerry Wood by the Cleveland Indians. It is hard to believe that Wood is 31 years old. He has won 77 games and has a career 3.65 ERA. He cannot be the best from the area, can he? I am sure there are tons better players that I am not thinking of.
Nolan Ryan wasn't from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area by the way!

Yes, you are correct.

Club Legends/Club Legacy
Those were my two favorites in Arlington. I remember going to one of them for the first time (the all-nude one, I can’t ever remember which that is) and when my friend told me it was BYOB, the conversation went something like this:
Me: OK, so this place is BYOB?
Friend: Yes, so we have to stop on the way to get beer.
Me: And it’s all-nude?
Friend: Yep.
Me: Let me get this straight- you bring your own alcohol, which saves money on drinks, since you’re not paying club prices- and you get to see the girls totally nude, not just topless?
Friend: That’s right.
Me: OK, so can you tell me why the FUCK we’ve been going to the other place instead?
I think that’s part of my problem- I’m the kind of person who attempts to apply logic to situations like this…

Dallas off NW Hwy.
I actually havent been in years since it moved. My wife doesnt like me to bring home strippers, or dancers, or any strange chick I meet for some reason. I remember the one in Arlington being a lot of fun too. I believe the laws are a little more relaxed over there. That used to be the only reason to go to Rangers games.
From what I heard
NW Hwy = Vietnamese Bath Houses

eleven years ago. I used to work at UTSW on Harry Hines. I was amazed when I was in Dallas this past January at how much different the Metroplex looked. The idea of developing Harry Hines 10-15 years ago would never have crossed my mind.

Depends what you call the metroplex
Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby were from North Texas, with Speaker hailing from Hubbard, which is near Hillsboro. Since that is a pretty liberal definition of the Metroplex, I’d probably have to go wtih Banks. But Speaker and Hornsby were better players, imo

I should hope so
but there is always someone who’ll start raising a fuss about a statement like that (probably a closet Cubs fan out there), so I figured that I’d just avoid the inevitable confrontation by qualifying my statement.
Hornsby
was born near Winters out in West Texas. He grew up around here but he wasn’t technically “from” here.

Just barely- he transferred from UTA after one season because he wanted to pitch, and Grayson CC was more willing to let him do so. At least that’s the story I’ve heard.
Speaking as a UTA alumnus, I don’t claim Lackey. Hunter Pence, Mark Lowe, Tim McKyer, and Cliff Odom, definitely. But if you weren’t at my school when you got drafted, I don’t count you.
We also don’t claim Lou Diamond Phillips, but that’s for different reasons. Embarrassment, mostly. :)
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
Yep
There’s a dorm named after her on campus, so we pretty much have to.
And the Lackey thing was mostly in jest- I’m just bitter he transferred. When your school’s main athletic claim to fame is the wheelchair basketball team, it tends to make you feel small in the face of all the UT and A&M alumni on these forums…

He’s from Abilene. I was in youth group with him at the Highland Church of Christ there. He was a year ahead of me. He played QB at Abilene High for 3 years and, honestly, wasn’t very good. He played 1B on their baseball team and was pretty good. He never pitched in high school to my knowledge. I never really knew him very well but his dad and his sister were nice enough.

Joe Morgan
is from Bonham. Kinda far for the metroplex, but if Grayson County College counts. Then Bonham has to also.
i think Joe Morgan with his play by play and career on the field could be a winner!
by mrichardson70 on Dec 30, 2008 5:23 PM CST up reply actions
He was born in Bonham, at least.
He didn’t grow up there as far as I know. Two other Bonhamites to consider: Danny Darwin and Roy McMillan. Neither are really contenders for this high honor but by Bonham standards they are the Babe Ruths of baseball.
i think his play by play
would automatically disqualify him and overrule any talent he showed on the field.
I have always like Joe’s play by play! Very humble guy for a sure HOF!

For the first six months or so at my current job, I didn’t really have any major projects to work on, and would read FJM archives for about two hours every day.
Awesome!
So I never realized how many people disliked Joe Morgan! I just checked out FJM. OMG! That is really funny! I still stand behind liking Joe though! Maybe it is that he is simple and when I watch a game I like to sit back and relax! Even if he is calling the game on a seven second delay!

And the first time I found out how stupid Morgan (also never paid attention to him before then) was when he came out trashing Moneyball. He never read the book and thought Billy Beane wrote it, but he was certain that it was just about nerds and calculators and such.

PISD screwed him
Short story: When he was in high school and would miss school for cycling events, they didn’t let it slide. They would bend over backwards for a football player, but since he was just riding a bike, they didn’t let have excused absences for that. I think they were going to hold him back a year or something like that too. In the end, he moved to Austin where the school district was supportive of him and since then, he claims thats his home town.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
The Ticket recently did a segment on
Sammy Baugh and suggested that he might be the best athlete ever from Texas, for what that’s worth. They noted his ability to throw the ball given an era where the running game was all that mattered, and the fact that he was a decent quarterback despite playing with a football shaped much more oddly than it is today.
Did he play with the black man?
