A trade!
There's been a trade!
Well, not one involving a Ranger, or any players the Rangers have been linked to, but nevertheless...
Luis Vizcaino is going from Colorado to the Cubs for Jason Marquis.
There you go.

Thanks a lot

the dominoes are starting to fall
this offseason is about to get crazy. JD is just waiting for the right moment to strike like a snake and send Willie Erye to the Brewers for a PTBNL and if we’re lucky, some cash.

who did we trade Luis for? i forgot
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
we traded away Duchscherer to get Vizcaino, then flipped him a few days later for Jesus Pena.
Looking back, that little series of moves didn’t exactly turn out to be sterling.

RANDOM FUNNY PIC HIJACK!!!

"I´d like to apologize in advance for anything that I may say or do that could be construed as offensive as I slowly go NUTS."
Totally relevant opinion on riveting piece of news: Jason Marquis
could hit 20 homers at Coors Field.
The Rockies have some decent depth at SP:
Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez, Greg Smith, Jason Marquis, Greg Reynolds, Franklin Morales, etc. Now Greg Smith and Jason Marquis might not be that great, but they still have the makings of a nice rotation. I’d say they got a pretty good chance to win the NL West next season.
They really need to get Tulo healthy and back to his epic '07 level of production for that to be even a little bit possible, though.
Losing him crushed them last year, imo.
And are they planning on using Ian Stewart at 2b? Seems like he’s not horrible there and they need to get his bat in the lineup somehow if they can’t find a sucker to take Atkins off their hands.

I think they can be pretty competitive
If Francis and/or Tulo comes back healthy and productive. If they can get those two guys back healthy, I see little reason why they couldn’t have a legit shot in the NL West.
Their rotation was -1.8 pitching runs above average (pRAA) last year, but I think a healthy Francis and a Smith and Marquis at the back of the rotation will give them an above average rotation.
In 2008, Cook and Jimenez had tRA+s of 112 and 117. Although Francis posted a 96 tRA+ in an injury shortened 2008, he averaged a 115 over the previous two seasons. The average #2 starter posts a tRA+ of 112, so I’d say they could potentially have three really good starters.
Smith and Marquis aren’t great, but as #4 and #5 starters, they are pretty serviceable. Marquis and Smith had tRA+s of 99 and 90 last year, which make them above average #4/5 starters. Amazingly, even de la Rosa had a tRA+ of 112 last season, although that probably isn’t sustainable. They also have some talented youngsters in Morales and Reynolds.
In terms of offense, they were 8.2 bRAA, so they were an okay hitting team. Losing Holliday will hurt, but I think getting back Tulo healthy and a full season from Ian Stewart could really help. Also, Dexter Fowler is incredibly talented and can eventually make up for some production in the OF (although maybe not next season). Carlos Gonzalez is also uncertain, but I think he can do some good things in Coors and with a change in scenary. Overall, I think they can stay an average to above average offensive team.
And their bullpen was pretty decent last year, at 28.5 runs above average. They picked up Huston Street and lost Fuentes. That is a pretty even swap.
They definitely have a lot of question marks even outside of Tulo and Francis, like Manny Corpas who was pretty uneven last year. But with a healthy Tulo and improving youngsters like Stewart, Fowler, and Gonzalez, I think they might be able to replace Holliday’s offensive production, and their rotation is better. I guess I might have over spoke when I said that Colorado has a good chance to win the division, but the NL West is pretty weak overall and if healthy I think you can make just as strong of an argument for Colorado as you could for Arizona or LA.

Up next…
Salty for Buckholtz and a PTBNL!
Oh the thrills of 2008. What an amazing year all around.
I'm assuming it's the unholy union of Joe Buck and Lou Holtz.
Scary.

Comedy is not pretty
Comedy benefits from subtlety. Had I spelled his name correctly (and not added PTBNL, which I thought was sorta funny) then my reply would simply be straight analysis (which it was not).
My attempt at humor has failed. And the meat heads below pounced. What else is new.
OK, I give up Shecky
What was supposed to be hilarious about you intentionally spelling his name that way?
Nah, noob.

Well if Jason Marquis and his 9.875mm salary for '09 can be dumped, that bodes well for us in the unlikely event we try to dump Padzilla and/or Millwood to make a run at Sheets.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I agree.
Maybe we can ship one of those two pitchers to the Braves since they have been unsuccessful in their attempts to further improve their rotation (after acquiring only Vazquez so far).

well dont learn about the refs
thats what the NBA does and it works for them
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
the minute sports fans in the US realize
that leagues with unlimited power with absolutely no governance is total poison to everything the actual sports stand for.
the NBA doesnt make basketball, it doesnt represent actually anything decent or pure about the game other than the talent. luckily we wont have to worry about that soon with the salary cap and all.
same for football. NFL thinks they are football. unfortunately, their interest isnt for whats best for the game. the refs are terrible and the game crawls at a snails place after all the ads and penalties.
these leagues are literally poisoning their own sports
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
Right.
And you know best, obviously. You follow the most boring exercise in time-waste this country knows—a sport that would suck dick to get a whiff of the NFL’s ass when it comes to advertising in America.
You represent the vilest scum in sports: the Soccer Elite. He’s the guy who thinks that just because he follows a sport that is not popular here (let’s be honest: it’s poison), but very popular in faraway lands (read: cool places), he is above the teeming masses who enjoy the most popular sports. He probably also listens to Connor Oberst and has the balls to mention him in the same sentence as Dylan.
I find it very humorous that a guy with presumably no experience in managing a multi-billion dollar corporation has no problem lecturing leagues that make money hand over fist while putting out a consistently good product how they should be run.
Go back to Russia, ya commie bastard.

first 2 sports on earth i played:
soccer and baseball…
those are the last 2 sports i follow.
Interesting Fact:
Pro Sports in the USA are SOCIALIST. everything is equal due to a cap, the poor performing team always gets the best pick next season so they can be equal, the schedules are never balanced to make a season mean something causing 2 or 3 mediocre teams always make a playoff with a shot to win it all. all teams no matter how much they make cant spend over a cap.
Thats socialism.
So who is the Commie?
and then i happen to follow the 2 sports that dont have a cap? the 2 sports that encourage a club to grow your fan support or die a slow death.
who is the Commie?
the one who supports and follows and adamantly consumes the socialist american sports sales job? or the one who wont tolerate it?

Can you penalty box the blog boss?
I’m going to Big Bend for four days. When I get back I expect an epic five team deal involving at least Hanley Ramirez, Hank Blalock, Salty, Julio Borbon, Buchholz, Jed Lowrie, Albert Pujols, Corey Patterson, and Tug Hulett.

Reds sign Taveras, 2yr/$6.25 million
This seems absolutely inane. Last year, Taveras made $1.95 million with the Rockies and they decided to non-tender him after he had a really bad year. Don’t all teams shop players they are about to non-tender? If the Reds had traded for him, they’d probably owe him 1yr/$2.25 million, at the most. And, they’d have him under yeam control for 2010. This seems mind-numbingly stupid.
