Thursday a.m. things
T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers are now looking to fill the role of minor league pitching instructor and AAA pitching coach, after Rick Adair's leaving to join the Mariners as their pitching coach. Andy Hawkins, the AAA pitching coach last season, is now the Ranger bullpen coach, and Frisco pitching coach Terry Clark is expected to fill either Adair's old job or Hawkins' old job.
Not much else out there today.

milb.com's 11-20 came out...
Ya their lists are usually pretty bad but its all thats out there at this point. Anyways no Rangers, which is good I guess, since Feliz and Smoak haven’t appeared on the list yet and I can’t imagine either missed the top 50. That will give the two top 10’s, Andrus at 21 and Holland at 45ish.
by groundingout on Dec 4, 2008 9:47 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Smoak
I seriously doubt he’ll be in the top 10. Posey, Matusz, and Tim Beckam are 18, 19, and 22 respectively, all of whom were more highly regarded than smoak. Alonso, the guy most people compare him to is down at 36. I could be wrong though, hard to see him not making the top 50.

if Terry Clark is so effective...
wouldn’t we rather have him stay at AA? Doesn’t it make sense for the guys making the biggest jump in professional baseball to be taught by our most effective pitching coach?
or maybe it does make sense to put the better coaches at higher levels. I’m sure he wants a raise and a promotion. I hope we get an adequate replacement at AA…

While the org is getting good again
if you are talking about the major league club, this year looks a lot like last year.
With the Rangers crying poverty, and it being unlikely we will see a kid in the starting 25 we haven’t seen before, this year looks like it could be a replay of last year. Which makes for an awfully dull offseason, and blog.
Personally, I think Adam could spice it up by finishing his top 50 rangers of all time! I know we are eagerly awaiting his next entry!

Too lazy to dig up the quote, maybe it was one of JD’s Newberg Q&As…the guy seems open to giving Holland a chance with the ML team out of Spring Training.
I’ve kind of given up on the idea of Elvis breaking camp as a Ranger, but I think he’ll be on the 25 in 2009.
A full year of Nelson Cruz should be interesting, even if he’s mostly making up for Milton’s departure.

I'd be surprised
if Elvis or Holland broke with the club. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised.
One of the problems with the Rangers is they just play a fairly sloppy brand of baseball in the field that can be hard to watch. With Bradley and Hamilton, they had the firepower to overcome it half the time, but its still fairly painful ball to watch.

I’m not sure I’d be all that pleasantly surprised to see Holland or Andrus on the ML club in April. We aren’t going to win out this year and there is no harm to giving those guys a little more seasoning in the minors.

I think we'll have a fundamental difference on the purpose of GDTs.
I think of it as a place for people to gather and comment on the game. I’m not expecting in-depth analysis of why Michael Young swung at a 3-1 slider down and away. I’m just looking to enjoy the game with other Rangers fans. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, and I certainly wouldn’t describe that as “patches of bullshit.”
That’s not to say that there aren’t OT tangents that arise. That’s just to say, it’s not like we’re devoting three hours to talking about Macho Man Randy Savage.

That is a good idea, I think. I like the fact that GDT’s are on the front page for the start (or impending start) and duration of a game, but once said game is over, it would be nice if they could be centralized elsewhere.

Melky Cabrera in RF, Mike Bourn in CF, Julio Borbon in LF – tough to dink one in between those guys.

those are intriguing arms
but no way is either one worth Laird. The three mentioned in the article, along with the two relievers they had in the AFL (Fien and Darrow, I believe) provide an interesting pool of guys, but I would want at least two of those guys, probably Moscoso and Marte. We’ll have to see what they give up for Wilson if that deal goes through.
by clark on Dec 4, 2008 1:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
the wildcard
might be young lefty Casey Crosby. He had TJ surgery after he was drafted, but he was back in just nine months and he reportedly was hitting 95-97 in instructs with advanced offspeed stuff for his age. knowing how this org has coveted lefties of late, he could be an intriguing name to remember.
by clark on Dec 4, 2008 1:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Those guys probably aren’t worth Laird, but I like Moscoso. Got healthy and had an incredible year this year, and I think that his stuff is a little better than you’ll read in these mainstream profiles. The guy I’d love to pry from them somehow, though, is Crosby.

I can’t speak with much confidence on Crosby, but I just wouldn’t think that Laird and Arias are the caliber of players they’d want to burn his value as an asset on. They invested a good amount of money and a year of rehab on him, and they appear to have really hit on their gamble. With the way he’s throwing now, even though he’s still a long ways off, it just seems like a real come-down to use him on something with so little upside for the big league team. Plus, Moscoso is a pretty nice player in his own right. It just doesn’t seem like very good value for Detroit. I admit, though, that those two pitchers are kind of favorites of mine (considering their standing).
by Brett Perryman on Dec 5, 2008 12:07 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I was completely
joking on Arias. I value him about as much as Drew Meyer, though I guess there might be some team out there that still sees a chance for him to contribute.

I like these quotes, too
Q&A with Dombrowski
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/touchingbase/2008/12/hot-stove-interview-tigers-gm.html
On the importance of a new catcher being able to handle the pitching staff — or whether it’s important to get a good-hitting catcher
Our situation is such that when you look at the top five in our lineup, you’re looking at Granderson, Polanco, Ordonez, Cabrera and Guillen — and Guillen, the second half of the year unfortunately had to deal with his wife’s situation which was near death for a while, the second half of the year and he got injured, now both of them are healthy and he feels good — you put those five guys at the top of the lineup, we think we can score runs and we want to make sure we have someone who can handle the staff and do a good job in that regard. So we would put handling the staff and the defensive aspect of it above the offensive part of it, but it’s not like we’re looking for an automatic out.
On what the Tigers are looking for at shortstop
Santiago can catch the ball at shortstop. The only question with Santiago for us is that he’s a small guy in stature, and how will he hold up over a whole year. It’s a matter of supplementing him with the right guy — he can catch the ball at shortstop, he plays well there. So that’s what we’re looking for.
If Arias’ arm is healthy, those two just seem like fits. He’s not even looking for a starter at SS.
Go Strangers.

Tea/Feliz/Holland/Salty mentions in ESPN Chat
Goose (Chicago): Do you think Derek Holland gets a taste of Arlington this season?
SportsNation Jason Grey: I do, simply because that might be the most effective way for Texas to improve their pitching – waiting for guys like Holland and Feliz to hopefully be ready at some point this year.
Greg (Syracuse): Jason, can you name your top 3 starting pitchers that will be up by June and impact their staff? Thanks.
SportsNation Jason Grey: Just some names off the top of my head…. Tommy Hanson, Brett Anderson, David Huff, one of the Holland/Feliz duo … I’m sure I’m missing someone, and that’s more than three as well.
Chet (LA): What do you think of Taylor Teagarden in a keeper league? Do you like Teagarden or Clement better in 09 and longterm? Thanks!
SportsNation Jason Grey: Good question. Teagarden, but I like them both. Don’t sleep on Clement this season.
Mike (DC): What do you make of the rangers catching prospect/personnel situation with Salty, Max Ramirez, and Laird in the mix?
SportsNation Jason Grey: One of the more interesting questions of the offseason. The Rangers are in the driver’s seat with at least two teams desperate to trade for a young catcher. The Rangers’ asking price has reportedly been very high, though. I think they go with Teagarden/Laird and focus on dealing Salty, who some organizations think can’t stay behind the plate anyway.

Klaw chat -- Rangers stuff
Tim (DC): KLaw, I look forward to your chat all week. Here’s we question. Seeing that the Rangers really wanted Junichi Tazawa and were willing to pay a good deal more money, do you see Theo Epstein turning right around and including him in a trade for Saltalamacchia?? Do you think this is why Theo signed him in the first place? Thanks for the insight.
SportsNation Keith Law: No, I don’t think that’s it at all, for a number of reasons.
Nick (Detroit City): Keith, If you had an open roster spot is there anybody that you’d select in the Rule 5?
SportsNation Keith Law: I haven’t studied the rosters, but I’d probably pass. Pedro Strop would be my top choice if I had to take someone.
For steal home:
James (LA): Hey Keith, In next years draft, if you are the Braves, would you pass on a CF talent like Donovan Tate and go for a pitcher like Andy Oliver, knowing that you have CF prospects like Jordan Schafer and Gorkys Hernandez in your system? Do front offices think like that?
SportsNation Keith Law: Best player available. Period.
Paul, NJ: Recently found your top 100 Novels list- Started with #8, 100 Years of Solitude, and am enjoying it thoroughly. As for baseball, do you expect the Rangers to move a catcher? Is Saltalamacchia to Boston dead?
SportsNation Keith Law: Amazing book. I do expect Texas to move at least one catcher this offseason, for pitching. Boston is still involved, but I know of nothing imminent.
